Picasso: Art & Arena Exhibit – An exhibition featuring dozens of Picasso originals, including many that have never been seen previously in the United States. What Flows From Spain Exhibit – In recognition of Florida’s quincentennial, the St. Augustine Art Association features a special exhibit of the works of Cuban-American artist Elio Beltran. The exhibit, titled What Flows From Spain, includes several large-scale narrative paintings emphasizing Florida’s ties to Spain. “Deeper-New Works Art Exhibit to Benefit Rikki” – Space:Eight Gallery exhibit opens with all new works by Chip Southworth produced for benefit of Rikke Southworth to aid in her ongoing battle with breast cancer. Sea Your History Weekend: The Art of Boatbuilding in the Oldest Port – The Art of Boatbuilding is the theme of a special weekend presentation at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, 81 Lighthouse Ave. Friday from 3-6 p.m. visitors can help Lighthouse archaeologists unlock the secrets of long-lost shipwrecks. Saturday at 9 a.m., visitors can meet and work with boat builders as they build a wooden boat from centuries gone by. At 11 a.m., a Smithsonian presentation gives visitors an opportunity to meet some of the people who make the Smithsonian the world’s leader in research and exploration. Riding into History Motorcycle Concours d’Elegance – Riding Into History, one of America’s premier motorcycle events, returns to World Golf Village in St. Augustine. On Friday at 10 a.m. there will be a Grand Marshal Historic Ride led by National Champion Racer and Motorcycle Hall of Famer, Kevin Scwantz. Hotel Ponce De Leon Carrere & Hastings Blueprint Exhibit – In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, historically and culturally significant ephemera relating to the construction and early years of the Hotel Ponce de Leon will be on display through February 22. This exhibit includes original Carrere and Hastings and McGuire drawings and blueprints, photographs, a copy of an 1885 map, and construction documents. Additionally, the exhibit highlights a group of artists who made the Hotel Ponce de Leon their seasonal home during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Original artwork and other artifacts related to their time in Saint Augustine will also be displayed at Flagler College’s Crisp – Ellert Art Museum, located at 48 Sevilla St., St. Augustine. New facility is topic of Applied Coral Technologies open house Information meeting at the Galimore Center on Wednesday, January 9 at 5:00pm
Applied Coral Technologies (ACT) 
will share information with the community regarding plans for a new facility during an open house scheduled for the Willie Galimore Center on Wednesday, January 9. The information meeting, which is open to the public, will run from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. The Galimore Center is located at 399 Riberia Street. ACT is an aquaculture facility specializing in the sustainable propagation of a large number of species of coral and other marine invertebrate. The company is a pioneer in the commercialization of growing corals, utilizing a patented process, as stock for the home and commercial aquarium trade, medical research and ocean reef restoration, all the while reducing the damage caused by the over harvesting of corals from natural reef systems. The company’s plans, the focus of the open house, are to locate its new headquarters facility at the southern terminus of Riberia Street. The facility is an Economic Development Initiative in cooperation with the City of St Augustine to add to the tax rolls and create needed jobs for the community. Locating the facility in that area, identified as Pougeard’s Pointe on nearly century old maps of the city, will necessitate the relocation of city owned horse stables that are currently in an adjoining area. That too will be discussed at the open house. In addition to its aquaculture work, ACT offers educational opportunities via a full water immersion Helmet Dive called “The Coral Experience,” educational out-reach programs, and aiding universities with an alternate supply of coral that does not deplete natural reefs. The open house will allow members of the community to meet representatives of ACT and ask questions about the operation and the planned facility. Members of the design team from Marquis Halback, Inc. and city staff familiar with the project will also be available to discuss the proposed project. NPS adds Constitución Obelisk to National Register of Historic Places
The City of St. Augustine received word last week that its nomination to the National Park Service that the Plaza’s Constitución Obelisk, commonly called the “Constitución Monument,” be recognized on the National Register of Historic Places was accepted. A complete story about the nomination, published on the city’s web site when the application was made in March, is available here. The story includes a history of the obelisk and a listing of all the sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places located in St. Augustine except the obelisk and the Farther Lopez statute located on the grounds of the Mission Nombre de Dios. Nomination for that feature was also made last spring and was added to the register during the summer.
30th annual Arbor Day ceremony scheduled Event marks 30th year city is named a Tree City USA
The City of St. Augustine will commemorate Arbor Day on Friday January 18 at the Hamilton Upchurch Park at the intersection of Anastasia Blvd. and Red Cox Dr. The brief ceremony starts at 11:00am and the public is invited to attend. As is the tradition, the ceremony will include the planning of a tree by city officials, presentations by the city’s Street Tree Advisory Committee, and musical selections from school students. This year students from R. B. Hunt Elementary School will participate. And, as is also a standing tradition, the ceremony will conclude with Smokey Bear assisting in the distribution of a variety of saplings to all in attendance. This year’s ceremony marks the 30th year the city has received the prized designation of Tree City USA from the National Arbor Day Foundation. There are over 160 cities in the State of Florida which have received the designation of Tree City USA, but only 10 have received the designation longer than St. Augustine. In addition, the Foundation presented the city with the Tree City USA Growth Award, an honor it has received every year since 1991. To see a list of all Tree City USA designated cities, click here. While National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April, individual states hold ceremonies on dates better suited to their own tree-planting season. Florida’s Arbor Day is celebrated on the third Friday in January. This year that is January 18. The site for the annual Arbor Day ceremony and the type of tree planted changes from year to year. Over the last decade, ceremonies have included planting Holly, Live Oak, Red Maple and Sycamore trees at Sebastian Inland Harbor, the Francis Field, Joseph Pomar, Jr. Recreational Facility, Eddie Vickers Recreational Facility, Government House, J. Edward “Red” Cox Recreational Facility, the Plaza de la Constitución, Davenport Park and the Fullerwood neighborhood. City recognized by the American Water Works Association Plaque unveiling set for Monday, January 14
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has recognized St. Augustine’s Water Treatment Plant as being the second oldest treatment plant in Florida. The plant, located at 254 West King Street, started operation in 1927, just eight years after the state’s oldest plant in Tarpon Springs. A plaque noting the distinction will be unveiled at a brief ceremony set for Monday, January 14 at 11:00am at the water treatment plant. The recognition was made at a meeting of the Florida Section of AWWA held in late November in Orlando and was received by Patrick Timoney, acting supervisor of the city’s water treatment plant. Founded over 125 years ago, the AWWA is today the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world representing over 57,000 individuals, utilities and other organizations. The Florida Section of AWWA (FSAWWA) includes utilities, scientists, educators, engineers, water plant operators, regulators, public officials, consultants, manufacturers, and consumers among its more than 2,770 members. The 130 utility members of the FSAWWA collectively supply potable water to more than 80 percent of the state’s population. Picasso coming to St. Augustine
The inaugural exhibition at The VIC, following its extensive remodeling, is PISCASSO Art & Arena. Opening on February 1 and running through May 11, PICASSO Art & Arena is an educational exhibition of graphic work and ceramics by the Spanish master showcasing 39 art pieces from the Fundacion Picasso, Museo Casa Natal of Malaga, Spain. The exhibition includes original Picasso art pieces created between 1929 and 1961. The art was produced in different styles, techniques and media, providing unique insights into one of Picasso’s main themes: bullfighting. PICASSO Art & Arena is a tribute to the Spanish cultural and artistic traditions that were introduced to Florida by Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and St. Augustine by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. The exhibition is designed for families as well as the art connoisseur. The exhibition offers tours led by specially trained guides who interact with the audience. The show is presented in both English and Spanish. The VIC is located at 10 S. Festival of Trees at World Golf Village
A festive display of holiday trees and wreaths decorated by businesses, organizations, families and friends from the local community, all to benefit two local charities. Viva Florida Art Exhibit
To commemorate the 500th Anniversary of Ponce De Leon’s naming of La Florida, the St. Augustine Art Association Gallery celebrates the sights and structures, beaches and byways, flora and fauna, history and happenings that are uniquely Florida with a new exhibit. Historic Weapons Demonstrations at Fort Matanzas
Take the National Park Service’s ferry to Rattlesnake Island and experience daily military life at Fort Matanzas – the 18th century Spanish fort that guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine. Changing of the Guard
Presented by the 1740 Spanish Garrison, Spanish Soldier re-enactors will march to St. Augustine Government House on the west end of the Plaza de la Constitucion where they will relieve the posted guards. A musket fire volley salute will follow. It takes place in the Plaza at 6 p.m.
