What: HOME, a Boulder organization of homeless people and their allies, will do a “Nap in” and hold signs outside the Boulder Municipal Building before the beginning of the Boulder City Council meeting. Some homeless people and their allies will also sign up to speak during the public comment section of the Boulder City Council Meeting.
When: Tuesday, May, 18 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Outside theBoulder Municipal Building. The building is located at the corner of Broadway and Canyon in Boulder.
Background:
For several months, HOME has been pressing the Boulder City Council to provide legal indoor and outdoor places for homeless people to sleep at night in Boulder. Boulder’s homeless currently have no legal options for sleeping (with any kind of shelter including a sleeping bag or blanket) in Boulder, since both the Boulder Shelter and the overflow shelter are closed and Boulder has a camping ordinance which prohibits the use of any kind of shelter, (including blankets and sleeping bags).
This weekend HOME sponsored “sleep ins” on Saturday and Sunday nights in the grassy area west of the Municipal Building to protest Boulder’s policies. There was no ticketing or arrests by the police. HOME also held potlucks and speakouts over the weekend.

In recent years you’ve expressed your opposition to war spending. Backbone Celebrates May Day in Baltimore
Last Month a team of Backbone artists traveled to Baltimore to help design and build imagery for our wonderful allies, United Workers.
Last weekend Backbone returned to help United Workers implement their May 1st Our Harbor Day. A day of celebratory participation plays and processions culminated in the appearance of Harriet Tubman who led the final March for Human Rights to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where United Workers is organizing a Human Rights Zone. Check out the inspiring photos, video, and blogs link to below.

Boulder Activists Pull Off Model Action At Coal Plant
A bunch of the folks from our Boulder Artful Activism training used their new found tools to pull off a picturesque action at a coal-fired power plant in Boulder, CO. Congratulations to them for a job well done – and for their courageous, creative work. We join them in calling on Boulder to lead by example. Just say “No” to Xcel’s dirty power – and “Yes!” to a clean, renewable energy future.

Backbone pulled off an amazing Artful Activism Summit in Baltimore!
Dear Friends,
Thanks to your support AND that of the Nathan Cummings Foundation Backbone Campaign has been doing more training and leaving more imagery and tools with activists than ever in our history. While our trainings and imagery builds have been delivered in smaller pieces in Oregon, Washington State and California – we just recently completed our first full fledged Artful Activism Summit.
It took place last week in Baltimore, MD. It was an incredible four days. The Backbone team of Steffon Moody (creator of the Giant Preamble, Mad Haters), Christopher Lutter (Snowflake, Morrie the Orca, and Lady Justice) and myself came home tired, but SUPER inspired. A couple of us hope to fly back out for the May 1 performance. This is what our hosts United Workers had to say about the experience:UnitedWorkers.org

Police plan increased DUI enforcement during Memorial Day weekend
Boulder Police are planning increased enforcement during the Memorial Day weekend in an attempt to deter drunken driving during this holiday. A DUI checkpoint will occur on Friday, May 28, starting at about 10 p.m. on Broadway, just north of Baseline Road. Multiple police officers will be contacting vehicles in this area. There will also be additional mobile DUI enforcement patrols on Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, starting at about 9 p.m. each evening.
The extra staffing for the DUI checkpoint and for the increased DUI enforcement has been made possible as a result of $19,630 in Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF) funds provided by the state of Colorado. The Boulder Police Department is providing $19,630 in matching funds and resources as a part of this DUI enforcement effort. These funds will be used for additional DUI Checkpoints during the summer of 2010. The state of Colorado also provided funding for four additional DUI overtime positions during the Memorial Day period.
In addition to the funds from the state of Colorado, the Boulder Police Department contributes $27,646 in DUI enforcement funds.
