Boulder Startup Week 2013: what we did.

Jann Scott is Boulder’s critical voice

First of all we are not exactly a start up. We are more an old school OG Boulder entrepreneurial company. That is to say Brad Feld and David Cohen didn’t invent the entrepreneurial movement here in Boulder. They joined it in the 90s and capitalized on it. Yes they are modern day Gurus, but Boulder has 100′s of gurus. Boulder’s entreperurship started in the late 1800s during the Colorado Gold rush and it never stopped.

So old timer tech entrepreneurs look at Feld , Cohen and Polis with some bemusement. They’ve seen it all before. This new hippy feel good neo communist business start up scene was really started by Moe Segal and the natural foods biz heads of the 1960s and 70′s. One CU business professor scoffed at the notion of Start Ups. ” Most of it is junk” he said. ” One or 2 out of 100 will be swallowed up by the VCs and make it to market but the other 98 will fail. So this is nothing new and Brad Feld is not that special.” he said.

And this is where I’d like to pick up. So what did we at Boulder Channel 1 do during this years Boulder Start Up Week. ?
We kept working that’s what we did. Part of our work was to send out sales reps to various event s to see where there was an opportunity to make some money by selling our services. What?? yep. We were looking for advertising clients, We were not looking for funding an angel or a VC. But we were looking to deal. We were selling. Overtly and not so overtly. We were looking for one $20,000 client for a year. One advertiser who needed banner ads, video, sm, pr, design, a show series, a web site and who wanted consumers from Boulder to buy their goods. We were on the hunt. We set a goal and went after it. That’s what start Up Week Boulder meant to us. No bullshit. No drinking. No fucking around. No chasing millionaires. Just hard work. Sales.

Did we land anyone. Yep we did. Two. we made $40,000 bucks this week off of Boulder Start Up week from two companies who wanted our services….. who needed our service… and who did not want to be dicked around by a bunch of drunks  who are playing at business.

There is a lesson here for those of you who want to be serious business people.  ( We have been successfully in business since 1975 here in Boulder. Like everyone else who digs this city, it only keeps getting better) We live in Utopia and we don’t take it for granted. We are truly blessed

What do we do to give back to Boulder?? We have been here for a long long time. We are established and have roots. we give cash to 30 different Boulder charities who help feed and clothe people. We produce videos for free for any non profit. We don’t charge non profits. We mentor homeless techies who need a hand up. We mentor kids of impoverished families.

Tyler, The Creator cause Gansta storm in Boulder What idiot invited this Jerk ?

1

Tumblr and the Fox Theater brought this LA gansta rapper to Boulder and since 6:30 pm 30 to 100 cops have been trying to corral  stoned and drunk punks who follow Tyler. Tumblr and the Fox better pay for this mess. Hip hop night and Rap artists never go over very well at the Fox. They bring with them guns, inner city thugs, crime and all kinds of trouble… every single time.  Shame on The Fox and Shame on Tumblr.

Photo by Tom Yulsman from twitter The Finger to a news helicopter.

Below is a Wikipedia description of the HATE spewed by Tyler..From Wikipedia
“Criticism
Tyler has been criticized for his use of homophobic slurs, in particular, his frequent use of the epithet faggot in his lyrics and on Twitter.[29][30] He has denied accusations of homophobia, stating, “I’m not homophobic. I just say faggot and use gay as an adjective to describe stupid shit,”[31][32] and, “I’m not homophobic. I just think faggot hits and hurts people.”[33] However, he later said in an interview with MTV about the slurs, “Well, I have gay fans and they don’t really take it offensive, so I don’t know. If it offends you, it offends you. If you call me a nigga, I really don’t care, but that’s just me, personally. Some people might take it the other way; I personally don’t give a shit.”[34][35]
Main article: Misogyny in hip hop culture
Tyler has also been criticized for his graphic depictions of violence against women and his misogynistic lyrics.[36][37] Brent DiCrescenzo of Time Out Chicago writes that rape is a “predominant theme” of Goblin[38] and Hermione Hoby of The Guardian writes that Tyler’s “rape and murder fantasies (are) graphic enough to send the vomit rising along with the bile.”[39] The Fader tallied 68 uses of the term “bitch” over Goblin’s 73 minutes.[40] Responding to Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara’s criticism of his lyrics,[41] Tyler tweeted: “If Tegan and Sara need some hard dick, hit me up!”[42]
Legal issues

On December 22, 2011, Tyler was arrested during a show at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, and charged with “suspicion of vandalism” for alleged destroying of sound equipment belonging to the venue. He was released on $20,000 bail.[1][43]
Feuds

In the song “Yonkers,” Tyler disses numerous artists, such as rappers/singers B.o.B and Bruno Mars, and Hayley Williams, frontwoman of band Paramore. Tyler, the Creator also disses Bruno Mars in The Game’s song “Martians vs. Goblins,” in which he and Lil Wayne are featured artists. In response, B.o.B released a similar diss track, entitled “No Future” that also references Tyler’s group, Odd Future. Ironically, Tyler praised the song, and initially did not think it was a diss track. Bruno Mars, in response to the verse “stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus,” said, “[Tyler] has to wait in line if he wants to stab me…[Tyler's] definitely not the first guy that’s said something like that to me and he’s not going to be the last.”[44] Los Angeles rapper Hopsin also dissed him in his “Ill Mind of Hopsin 4″ music video, released in July 2011. As a response, he was parodied in the “Martians vs. Goblins” music video.
Tyler, The Creator and R&B singer Chris Brown feuded due to claims Brown tweeted on Twitter of Odd Future’s music containing a “demonic” message. Tyler had made several sarcastic remarks via Twitter afterwards, leading to a heated feud between the two musicians. Before a live performance alongside Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator called out Chris Brown referring to Brown’s savage beating of fellow musician Rihanna. Afterwards, Brown and Tyler cleared up the feud when Tyler tweeted that he is a fan of Chris Brown’s song “Look At Me Now” featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. According to Tyler, The Creator there are things “[his fans] don’t even know” about the feud.[45]
Tyler has also feuded with former collaborator Brandun DeShay. Prior to SXSW 2011, DeShay confronted Tyler through Formspring and said that he was going to “settle this” at SXSW. Tyler has since told fans that the only song they ever collaborated on was “Session”, from Tyler’s debut album Bastard. Tyler re-released the album one year after its initial release, replacing Brandun DeShay’s verse with a new one by Mike G. Tyler has since said that any other song performed by the two of them were created by DeShay, and that he recorded verses over Tyler’s songs without his permission. According to Tyler, DeShay hit him at one point. Tyler also disses DeShay in his song “Yonkers”, by bragging about his own success and publicity.[46]
Through Formspring, Tyler has also said that he does not like Vince Staples, although he praised his rapping abilities.[47] Vince has collaborated with several members of Odd Future, notably Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G, Domo Genesis & The Jet Age of Tomorrow. In 2011, Tyler said that he does not dislike Vince, but he dislikes the fact that people think he is a part of Odd Future when he is not actually in the group.[48]“

Rob Smoke questions city of Boulder methods snow removal

0
rob smoke

Rob Smoke , a barb to the city council.

Below, council member Ken Wilson openly confesses to the “liberal” use of de-icing material — or “salt.”
Regardless of the brand or quality of the product, this behavior can lead to consequences on several levels — here’s a quote from a standard reference:

“Environmental impact
Deicing salts such as sodium chloride or calcium chloride leach into the soils, where the ions (especially the cations) may accumulate and eventually become toxic to the organisms and plants growing in these soils.[4] The chemicals could also reach water bodies in concentrations that are toxic to the ecosystems. Organic compounds are biodegraded and may cause oxygen-depletion issues. Small creeks and ponds with long turnover time are especially vulnerable.
Propylene glycol used to de-ice aircraft can contaminate drinking water supplies and harm aquatic life. Some airports are now capturing and treating de-icing runoff before allowing it to enter waterways.[5]”

Certainly there’s a range of possible impacts — council members, particularly ones who claim a “science” background, as Ken Wilson most certainly has on many occasions, should be AWARE of what they are doing and promoting as it affects the surrounding community.
A response is always welcome.
BY THE WAY…. there are recommended alternatives — one that I personally prefer are an add-on to shoes (sometimes called “crampons”) that are available at shoe, department stores, and running stores here in Boulder and online. They provide excellent help for situations where you can’t predict the snow or ice shoveling proficiency of neighbors.
Happy snow day. Cheers!

Thanks for your email, Ken. I spoke with Chief Beckner and learned that we do not have Code Enforcement officers assigned to work weekends. Code enforcement
will begin again on Monday. Our code enforcement team does an excellent job of addressing issues and will do all they can within the strictures of the ordinance to handle snow removal calls.

Subject: Snow shoveling enforcement
Jane,

I am wondering if we will have snow shoveling enforcement tomorrow (Saturday). We have a situation which I was concerned about when Matt made a motion to change the ordinance from
a “morning after” requirement to a 24 hour requirement as we were doing second reading several years ago. Because of the way this snow fell, enforcement won’t begin today (Friday) as there were a few flakes falling late yesterday. Will there be any enforcement
over the weekend? If not, then it would begin on Monday. Of course, more snow is expected Monday, which would reset the clock on all the offenders. We could have slippery sidewalks for a week.

I thought of this all the way to the bus stop this morning as I was trying not to slip and fall on all the uncleared sidewalks. I don’t heal like I used to and it was almost enough
to make me want to turn around and drive instead. Fortunately I didn’t fall – yet.

My sidewalk is clean and dry – which the Camera can verify if they like. We shoveled twice as it was coming down and used salt liberally.

Boulder’s Caring Community: Rock Creek Church

0

Last year, Rock Creek Church, through the leadership of Tucker Roth, organized a van pool to transport our homeless guests from our warming shelter into central Boulder.

Mr. Roth approached BOHO to see how he could help in November of 2011. When he realized that our guests had to travel several miles from East Arapahoe early on Sunday morning, when RTD service is not available, he found his niche.

Seventh Day Baptist Church, at 6710 Arapahoe, opens an emergency warming center for BOHO guests on Saturday nights. At seven A.M. every Sunday morning, most of our guests head into central Boulder to take refuge from the cold in public buildings. A Mapquest search indicates it is almost five miles from the church to the public library – a long walk any time of day, but a tremendous trek through the cold and snow with a heavy backpack in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Through Mr. Roth’s vision and the work of church volunteers, our guests no longer face that Sunday morning ritual. A group of vans from the Rock Creek church started arriving at Seventh Day Baptist and driving into Boulder until everyone at the shelter was transported.

“They make sure nobody is left behind” said Mike Homner, a BOHO board member and volunteer at the centers. “That is their philosophy.”

This year, in addition to this transportation service, Rock Creek became an overflow site for Seventh Day Baptist Church, using it’s van pool on Saturday nights to transport guests to their location in Louisville. They then transport them back on Sunday morning and maintain their trips into central Boulder for all who need it.

Through a flotilla of volunteers, burritos, coffee, hot chocolate and granola bars are served to our guests in the morning before they face the next twelve hours of cold weather without the protection of a home.

“Tucker Roth is one of the most caring persons I have ever met.” Homer said.

Rock Creek Church is located at 225 Majestic View Drive, Louisville, CO,

Demand for Shelter Soars in Boulder

0

As of January 8, BOHO has provided safe, warm, legal sleeping to almost 5,500 guests on 57 nights of operation, an average of almost 97 guests per night. As of the same date a year ago, BOHO’s Emergency Warming Centers (EWC) had provided shelter from severe and stormy weather to fewer than 5,000 guests on 67 nights of operation, for an average of 75 guests per night.

Although our Fall weather was mild at times this year, we have had an unbroken sequence of severely cold and even stormy nights for over a month. BOHO’s EWC guests, homeless residents of Boulder, would not have had safe, warm and legal sleeping, as the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless has operated at or near capacity so far this season.

As we look ahead, we expect to provide EWCs virtually every night for another nine or ten weeks of harsh Winter weather. We have honed and polished our practices, and built up our reserves, trained our volunteers, and worked with the many congregations who provide facilities and support. We’ll still need your help as this time goes forward, providing a shelter safety net for the safety net to Boulder’s homeless residents.

Your support and donations have provided safe, warm and legal sleeping to BOHO’s EWC guests. There are more guests being served every night this year; the needs of the poor are increasing. Thank you for helping us to provide the fundamental human need of a safe, warm shelter for sleeping.
From BOHO BUZZ

The Christmas Story of the Birth of Jesus

0

It is Christmas eve 2012 here in Boulder on a snowy night in the Rocky Mountain west. 2012 years ago tonight the savior of the world was born. His name Jesus of Nazareth. He is followed by more men and women in the world than any guru, profit or teacher ever. Boulder is predominantly a Christian community with followers who are relatively quiet about their devotion to Christ. There are very vocal atheists here who are a tiny minority, small group of Jews, and a very small group of Buddhists. Sprinkled in are a few Muslims ( who also follow Jesus) and several hundred very tiny cults of religions. But far and above is Jesus Christ. Tonight is his night. He is the reason for the season.
His power knows no limits. For those who call his name profound miracles have happened even in this day. The following is the story of the first miracle.

The Christmas Story of the Birth of Jesus – Paraphrased from the Bible:

This Christmas story gives a biblical account of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas story is paraphrased from the New Testament books of Matthew and Luke in the Bible.

References:

Matthew 1:18-25; Matthew 2:1-12; Luke 1:26-38; Luke 2:1-20.

The Conception of Jesus Foretold

Mary, a virgin, was living in Galilee of Nazareth and was engaged to be married to Joseph, a Jewish carpenter. An angel visited her and explained to her that she would conceive a son by the power of theHoly Spirit. She would carry and give birth to this child and she would name him Jesus.

At first Mary was afraid and troubled by the angel’s words. Being a virgin, Mary questioned the angel, “How will this be?” The angel explained that the child would be God’s own Son and, therefore, “nothing is impossible with God.” Humbled and in awe, Mary believed the angel of the Lord and rejoiced in God her Savior.

Surely Mary reflected with wonder on the words found in Isaiah 7:14 foretelling this event, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (NIV)

The Birth of Jesus:

While Mary was still engaged to Joseph, she miraculously became pregnant through the Holy Spirit, as foretold to her by the angel. When Mary told Joseph she was pregnant, he had every right to feel disgraced. He knew the child was not his own, and Mary’s apparent unfaithfulness carried a grave social stigma. Joseph not only had the right to divorce Mary, under Jewish law she could be put to death by stoning.

Although Joseph’s initial reaction was to break the engagement, the appropriate thing for a righteous man to do, he treated Mary with extreme kindness. He did not want to cause her further shame, so he decided to act quietly. But God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream to verify Mary’s story and reassure him that his marriage to her was God’s will. The angel explained that the child within Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, that his name would be Jesus and that he was the Messiah, God with us.

When Joseph woke from his dream, he willingly obeyed God and took Mary home to be his wife, in spite of the public humiliation he would face. Perhaps this noble quality is one of the reasons God chose him to be the Messiah’s earthly father.

Joseph too must have wondered in awe as he remembered the words found in Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (NIV)

At that time, Caesar Augustus decreed that a census be taken, and every person in the entire Roman world had to go to his own town to register. Joseph, being of the line of David, was required to go to Bethlehem to register with Mary. While in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus. Probably due to the census, the inn was too crowded, and Mary gave birth in a crude stable. She wrapped the baby in cloths and placed him in a manger.

The Shepherd’s Worship the Savior:

Out in the fields, an angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds who were tending their flocks of sheep by night. The angel announced that the Savior had been born in the town of David. Suddenly a great host of heavenly beings appeared with the angels and began singing praises to God. As the angelic beings departed, the shepherds decided to travel to Bethlehem and see the Christ-child.

There they found Mary, Joseph and the baby, in the stable. After their visit, they began to spread the word about this amazing child and everything the angel had said about him. They went on their way still praising and glorifying God. But Mary kept quiet, treasuring their words and pondering them in her heart. It must have been beyond her ability to grasp, that sleeping in her arms—the tender child she had just borne—was the Savior of the world.

The Magi Bring Gifts:

After Jesus’ birth, Herod was king of Judea. At this time wise men (Magi) from the east saw a star, they came in search, knowing the star signified the birth of the king of the Jews. The wise men came to the Jewish rulers in Jerusalem and asked where the Christ was to be born. The rulers explained, “In Bethlehem in Judea,” referring to Micah 5:2Herod secretly met with the Magi and asked them to report back after they had found the child. Herod told the Magi that he too wanted to go and worship the babe. But secretly Herod was plotting to kill the child. So the wise men continued to follow the star in search of the new born king and found Jesus with his mother in Bethlehem. (Most likely Jesus was already two years of age by this time.) They bowed and worshiped him, offering treasures of gold, incense, and myrrh. When they left, they did not return to Herod. They had been warned in a dream of his plot to destroy the child.

Silhouette Conscious Fashion

The entire downtown Boulder business community is sending love and well wishes to Silhouette owner, Erin Carver who began a fight against brain cancer just three months after opening her store earlier this year. To allow Erin and her friends & family to be 100% focused on her fight, Silhouettewill be closing its doors.

Anyone who is going through chemotherapy and/or radiation can choose a FREE hat of their choice from the store while supplies last and the Silhouette staff hopes that you will stop by during their closing sale.
