| Our Lands, Our Future: Evaluating the Hidden Gems Wilderness Proposal Dear Friends, I was recently given a formal recommendation for new wilderness areas in the White River National Forest within Summit and Eagle Counties. Managing our land wisely is important for the economy and the many jobs that rely on our unique landscapes. I believe that decisions about how we use our public lands are critical to our future, and that everyone should have a say. That’s why I am undertaking an extensive public review process throughout the area to get your feedback, including numerous public hearings, office hours and mail and online surveys. What Is the Hidden Gems Wilderness Proposal? This proposal would add a number of new Forest Service areas to the National Wilderness Preservation System. Wilderness areas ensure important lands remain undeveloped for generations to come. Wilderness areas prohibit things like oil and gas leasing, permanent structures and new roads, and are a refuge for activities our economy relies on like fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. Other popular activities like mountain biking and motorized recreation are restricted in wilderness, but the specific boundaries should leave most mountain biking trails and motorized recreation areas unaffected and more compromises are being developed as well. What Areas Are Under Consideration? The current draft proposal contains both new areas and additions to current wilderness areas within Summit and Eagle Counties. A draft map of areas under consideration and maps showing specific trail detail and boundaries can be found at www.polis.house.gov/wilderness. I encourage you to attend an event, fill out a survey and share your expertise and opinions with me on this issue. Sincerely,

Thank heavens for this Wilderness Warrior! These areas are truly the last best pristine and intact ecosystems in Summit and Eagle Counties – the heart of our central Rockies. The Hidden Gems is a carefully crafted, well-researched plan that has seen tremendous citizen outreach. Many compromises have been made for various recreational users and other stakeholders. In fact, nearly 100,000 acres have been removed to ensure mountain biking now and in the future, as well as outfitter and hunting access, future water rights protected for towns, and plenty of room for wildfire fighting and mitigation efforts. This is a great proposal! I'm glad Mr. Polis is doing his own outreach as that will make it even stronger.
