Early Tuesday morning, police were alerted to reports of a man in camo clothes carrying what appeared to be a rifle wrapped in a blanket in the park above Chautauqua meadows. Park Rangers and a Boulder County SWAT team searched the area and located the individual, who was armed with a .22-caliber pellet gun, in a field on city-owned property in the county. The situation has ended peacefully. Investigators have not released any information about what the individual’s intentions were, but public safety officials are comfortable that there is no threat to public safety.

OSMP rangers are planning to issue the individual a summons for violation of 5-8-4 (possession of a firearm on open space). We understand that this situation caused distress for members of the community, and we greatly appreciate the prompt response of police and our partners in the sheriff’s office.
