The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) department is experiencing a rise in heat-related dog emergencies on the trails this summer.

“We have already had numerous dog rescues this year, with more hot weather on the way.” said Jean Koszalka, Lead Ranger for OSMP. “Several dogs have been carried out by Rangers and Rocky Mountain Rescue group.  Not all have made it.”

OSMP Rangers are urging visitors to:

Walk their dogs in the early morning or evening when it is cooler.

If you choose to walk your dog in the mid-day heat, find a shady trail.

Stop often for rests.

Bring plenty of extra water for your dog.

Know the signs of heat emergencies in dogs.

Immediate action could save your dog.
