Boulder cops arrest one of their own
0Boulder police officer to face attempted first degree murder charge
Boulder police have issued an arrest warrant for Boulder police officer Christian McCracken, who has been in custody at the Broomfield County Jail since he was arrested last weekend on domestic violence-related charges.
McCracken had previously sustained a head injury at the hands of Trevan Hunter, a CU student who’d refuse to to leave The Sink, a popular Boulder restaurant, or pay his $3 bar tab.
McCracken was arrested by Broomfield police in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 28 after allegedly stalking and harassing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, both of whom are dispatchers at the Boulder Police Department.
At the time of McCracken’s arrest, Boulder police began a criminal investigation into information that he may have planned and taken a significant step toward committing a homicide against the new boyfriend. After consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, it was agreed that probable cause existed to obtain an additional arrest warrant.
- Trevan Hunter caused McCracken to sustain a head injury during his arrest.
“While we are concerned and saddened by the need to arrest one of our own officers, we are primarily focused with the safety of our employees and members of the community,” said Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner. “As information became available, it became increasingly apparent that we needed to act quickly. Our detectives, in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, did a great job in putting this case together.”
McCracken was arrested at the Broomfield County Jail this morning on new charges of suspicion of Attempted First Degree Murder (one count), two counts of Stalking and one count of Harassment.
The case number is 12-5679.
At this time, McCracken will remain in custody at the Broomfield County Jail. His bond has been set at $500,000. Boulder police are also conducting an internal personnel investigation into the case.
Boulder Street alcoholic found dead in creek
0Boulder police investigating body found in Boulder Creek
arly this morning, a passer-by walking along Boulder Creek in the area of 13th and Arapahoe called police to report a body in the water, near the bank.
The man was deceased. He was a homeless person known to police, but his identity is not being released until authorities can determine whether the man had any family who should be notified.
According to a homeless man who spoke to police, he and the deceased man were drinking with a small group of transients until the early morning hours. Around 4 a.m. the group split up.
Police were not called until 6:30 this morning, when the passer-by noticed the body.
At this time, circumstances do not appear to be suspicious. The Boulder County Coroner has been notified.
The police department press release does make the connection between the street alcoholic drinking by the creek and his body being found in the creek. This is not an unusual demise for this population. To say that they are homeless or transient is misnomer according to experts who work with chronically addicted street people. They are no more transient than the student population at CU or IBMers who work in Boulder on monthly contracts. To call them homeless implies that all homeless are like this.
Some homeless are situationally homeless because of loss of job. This is seen more and more in Boulder. Many of them do not have a drinking problem. They just need and want work. Some so called homeless are mentally ill and are on the streets because they cannot cope in society, but they all don’t have alcohol problems.
Nationally, approximately 70% of “homeless population” are adult males in a dominant addiction such as alcoholism. They are homeless by choice: ie they would rather fly a sign for drinking money and stay by the creek. The other 30% are out of work people and the mentally ill.
Alcoholism is a serious problem in Boulder for the “homeless” and the employed alike
In this rare press release, it is unusual that the Boulder Police department makes a connection between this kind of death and drinking, but it is more likely than not in most homeless deaths in Boulder.

Peeping Tom caught in the act
0Boulder police ask for public’s help in identifying peeping tom suspect
Boulder police are releasing several surveillance photos of a suspect believed to be responsible for peeping into residences in the 800 block of Marine St. over the past several months. He may also be responsible for similar incidents in the 1000 block of 11th St.
The victims who have reported the peeping tom have been both male and female.
Police believe the suspect may have collected traces of bright yellow tracking powder on his shoes from one of these incidents.
The suspect may be approximately 6 feet tall, and investigators believe he is a white male. Photos indicate he has been wearing a gray or dark-colored sweatshirt or hoodie.
The case numbers are 12-3808, 12-1401 and 12-4766.

Midnight armed robbery not reported until the next day

A male in his early twenties says he was robbed at gunpoint around 12:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6. The victim did not call police at the time of the alleged robbery. He contacted officers the next day.
The victim told police he was walking alone along the bike path near 17th and Arapahoe when an unknown male stepped in front of him and demanded money. The victim says the suspect was holding a handgun. The victim complied and handed over his cash, and the suspect fled.
The victim said that because it was dark, he was unable to provide many details about the suspect other than that he was a white male wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans.
The case number is 12-4602.

Cellphones become prime target for thieves

Police seek suspect in cell phone thefts
Boulder police are looking for a suspect who allegedly walked into the Best Buy store at 1740 30th St. in the middle of the day, and walked out with three, brand-new cell phones, still in their boxes. The suspect did not pay for the phones.
It happened on Friday, March 30 around 11:25 a.m. Although an employee attempted to stop the suspect and demand that he show receipts for the phones, the suspect continued to walk out of the store. Police are looking for:
- A while male
- Very thin build; described as “gaunt” by a store employee
- Between 30-and-40 years old
- Average height
- Short brown hair (almost shaved)
- Wearing a short-sleeve gray t-shirt, blue jeans and black-and-white athletic shoes
The case number is 12-4273. Photos of the suspect are attached; he has a very distinctive tattoo of a spider on his elbow.

0Police attempting to identify three males who may have information in credit card theft, burglary
Boulder police are investigating a burglary that took place in the 800 block of 18th St. on March 18, in the early-morning hours. Three roommates admitted that they didn’t lock their door while they left the residence for a short period of time. While they were out, a credit card and some electronic items were stolen from the apartment.
The credit card was used at a local deli. Attached are three photos of the males Boulder police would like to identify and speak with. Investigators consider all of the men persons of interest in this case.
The first male is described as:
- White male
- Very short, buzz-cut hair, nearly bald
- Medium build
- Wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a CU logo & black pants
The second male is described as:
- White male
- Short, dark hair
- Black, long-sleeve shirt with a “SF” (San Francisco) logo & black pants
The third male is described as:
- Olive-skinned male
- Short, dark hair
- Gray long-sleeve shirt with an unknown logo at the shoulder

#Boulder police: Creek path attacker foiled by kick to testicles
0Woman grabbed on bike path; police looking for assailant
Boulder police are looking for a suspect in an attack that took place on Saturday, March 31 in the 300 block of Canyon.
At 7:31 p.m., a 22-year-old woman was walking alone along the bike path when she says she was grabbed from behind. The male suspect grabbed her around the waist, neck and thighs as she was on the sidewalk. The victim fought back and may have kicked her assailant in the groin area; he abruptly let go of her and she ran away and immediately called police.
She last saw the suspect walking south on 6th Street near the Criminal Justice Center. Police officers and a Boulder County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit scoured the area, but were unable to locate the suspect. The suspect is wanted for Attempted Sexual Assault.
The woman suffered several scratches, but was otherwise unhurt.
The suspect is described as:
- Approximately 50 years old
- White male
- 5’6” tall
- White hair in a 6-inch-long ponytail
- Brown and white beard, approximately 6 inches long
- Missing a front tooth
- Wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and carried a backpack
- Witness described him as dirty, and smelling bad

0Unlawful sexual contact suspect wanted in Boulder
Boulder police were called to the 900 block of University at about 4:30 this morning after a female reported that she awoke to an unknown man in her bedroom fondling her.
The victim was asleep with her boyfriend. She felt someone touch her and screamed when she awoke to see that it was a stranger. The suspect ran from the home. Police set up a search perimeter, but were not able to locate him.
Police believe the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door.
The suspect is described as:
- White male
- 18 to 22 years old
- 5’8” to 5’10” tall
- 170 pounds
- Dark brown or black hair, in a “buzz cut” style
- Wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans
The victim’s roommates were also home at the time of the incident; they had no contact with the unknown suspect.
The case number is 12-3671.

#CU cops: Serial bank robber is busted
0The suspect was dubbed the “Face Off Bandit” by FBI investigators because he used fake beards as disguises, which he discarded as he fled.
The suspect who law enforcement officials believe is the so-called “Face Off Bandit” was arrested this afternoon as he was leaving a Wal-mart store in Thornton. The “Face Off Bandit” is believed to be responsible for six bank robberies in four jurisdictions, including Boulder, Golden, Thornton and Louisville.
Mark Steven Edwards (DOB 9/19/1961) faces three felony Robbery charges in connection with the Boulder bank robberies. Forensic evidence linked him to the robberies, and he was arrested on a Boulder Police Department warrant.
In Boulder, the first robbery occurred on Dec. 16, 2011 at Great Western Bank, located at 1900 9th St.
The second robbery took place at First Bank, located at 4770 Baseline, on Jan. 19, 2012.
Chase Bank, located at 603 S. Broadway, was robbed on Feb. 15, 2012.
The “Face Off Bandit” is also suspected of robbing a Wells Fargo Bank in Golden, Key Bank in Thornton and First National Bank in Louisville. These cases are still under investigation by police agencies in those jurisdictions.
In each of the Boulder robberies, the suspect entered the bank and walked directly to the teller, demanding money. Tellers complied with the suspect’s demand. No one was hurt.
The suspect fled on foot after each robbery, and police found discarded beards and other items believed to belong to the suspect.
Edwards is in custody at the Boulder County Jail. His bond has been set at $100,000.

The Boulder Police Department is grateful for the assistance that other law enforcement agencies provided during the investigations. Those agencies include: FBI-Denver, the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force, the Louisville Police Department, the Thornton Police Department, the Golden Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team, which executed a search warrant in unincorporated Adams County on behalf of the Boulder Police Department.

Boulder police looking for a men’s room bully
0Assault suspect wanted in Boulder
Boulder police are looking for a college-aged man in connection with an assault that took place at Conor O’Neill’s Pub, located at 1922 13th St., on Friday, March 2. The male victim was allegedly assaulted in the men’s room of the bar around 12:37 a.m.
The incident apparently began when the suspect tried to enter a stall the victim was using. The victim says the suspect waited for him to exit, and then pushed him. The two got into an altercation and, according to the victim, the suspect hit him in the face with a beer bottle.
The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for several cuts and scrapes on his face and head.
The suspect fled the bar and police want to locate him. A composite sketch is attached, and he is described as:
- A white male
- 21 to 29 years old
- 6’00” to 6’3” tall
- 180 to 210 pounds
- Build was described as “not toned”
- Wearing a white shirt with thin blue stripes
- Short blonde hair, possibly bleached or highlighted
- Last seen running westbound through the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot
- May have been bleeding from his mouth and may have a cut over his left eye
