Transportation Department hosting Fourmile Link welcoming event on Sunday

Boulder County, Colo. – Following today’s grand opening of the Fourmile Link Trail at Betasso Preserve, the Boulder County Transportation Department is preparing for increased bicycle traffic on Fourmile Canyon Drive and will be hosting a welcoming event this Sunday.
What: The Boulder County Transportation Department will provide fruit, snacks, cool water and share-the-road materials for cyclists
When: Sunday, July 15 starting at 7:30 a.m.
Where: Near the end of the Boulder Creek Path close to the intersection of Boulder Canyon and Fourmile Canyon drives
Why:
- Additional bicycle traffic is expected on Fourmile Canyon Drive between the end of the Boulder Creek Path and the newly opened Fourmile Link Trail at Betasso preserve, especially on Sundays
- Fourmile Canyon Drive does not have bikeable shoulders and both automobiles and bicyclists are expected to share the road
- Bicyclists are encouraged to transition to single-file riding when cars are present and/or when riding around curves
- Motorists are encouraged to pass bicyclists with care, providing three feet of separation
- Motorists are encouraged slow down and wait for the next safe passing opportunity if there is oncoming traffic or a curve approaching
- Courtesy is contagious! Being patient and respectful ensures that both motorists and cyclists reach their destinations safely
Additional info:
- It is approximately 1.25 miles up Fourmile Canyon Drive from the end of the Boulder Creek Path to the start of the Fourmile Link Trail
- Betasso Preserve trails prohibit bicycles on Wednesdays and Saturdays
- The Fourmile Link Trail is 0.8 miles long and connects the Benjamin Loop with Fourmile Canyon Drive

Weather causes some county closures, meeting cancellations
Boulder County, Colo. – Due to severe weather and power outages caused by the storm, Boulder County has canceled many activities.
Canceled for today:
All courts and county business at the Criminal Justice Center, other than the Juvenile Center and emergency operations, are canceled today. The building will remain closed to the public for the remainder of the day. This closure affects the 20th Judicial District Courts, City of Boulder Municipal Courts, County
Courts, the District Attorney’s Office and the Coroner’s non-emergency services.
The Resource Conservation Advisory Board meeting scheduled for 4:45 p.m. at the Recycling Center has been canceled and has been re-scheduled for Nov. 30 at 4:45 p.m. at the Recycling Center. For more information, please call 720-564-2220.
The Healthy Cooking and Eating class at 6 p.m. with Mary Collette Rogers at the CSU Extension Office has been canceled and will be rescheduled for another Wednesday evening. The Class on Nov. 2 will be held at the ACE Hardware Store in Longmont.

Canceled for Thursday:
The Parks and Open Space Department has canceled the “I Spy Spooky Halloween Animals” program that was scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Betasso Preserve. The event will not be rescheduled.
The monthly senior hike that was to take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Bald Mountain has also been canceled. The Senior Hike will take place next month as scheduled. For more information please call 303-678-6200.

Sheriff Pelle orders outdoor fire ban

Sheriff Joe Pelle has enacted a fire ban, which restricts open burning and prohibits the discharge of any and all fireworks and model rockets in the unincorporated mountain areas of Boulder County.
This includes all unincorporated areas west of U.S. 36 (North Foothills Highway), and west of Highway 93 (South Foothills Highway) as well as Rabbit Mountain Open Space (see map).
During the fire ban, open burning is permitted only under the following circumstances:

Fire contained within liquid or gas fuel stoves

Camp fires in U.S. Forest Service improved/maintained campgrounds that are currently open to the public*(see separate news release from the U.S. Forest Service)

Charcoal grill fires on private property
Charcoal grills at county open space shelters on mountain properties are also closed during this ban. This includes, but is not limited to, Rabbit Mountain, Heil Valley Ranch, Hall Ranch, Betasso Preserve, and Walker Ranch.
The ban will remain in effect until the hazardous fire conditions subside. Anyone found in violation of the ban may be convicted of a Class 2 petty offense and may be subject to a $500 fine. Higher fines may be imposed for subsequent offenses.
Fire ban rationale
The Boulder County foothills have continued to dry out after months of moderate moisture. Currently, Boulder County has a high fire danger rating, as determined by the National Weather Service National Fire Danger rating System. This is due to a combination of dry fuels, hot and dry weather and an increase in regional wildland fire activity.
It is anticipated that with the continued late summer and early fall drying season and the expected beginning of the Chinook winds, Boulder County will continue to have a high fire danger rating.
State statutes authorize counties to impose fire restrictions when the threat of wildfire has been determined by credible and quantifiable data, to be “high.” The Sheriff’s Office relies upon data from the U.S. Forest Service, the National Weather Service, and local experience with fire conditions to make this determination.
*Note: as of Sep. 2, fire restrictions are also in place on portions of National Forest System lands in Boulder and Larimer Counties in support of the fire ban by Boulder County. (Read the news release from the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland)
