Boulder Transit Center improvements to open Saturday
Oct 4th
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Boulder Transit Center is scheduled to reopen to bus, bike and pedestrian traffic, thanks to funding from the 2011 voter-approved Boulder Capital Improvement Bond, a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) FASTER grant, and the Regional Transportation District (RTD). The area around the Boulder Transit Center area has been under construction since late May 2013, with buses and passengers temporarily relocated to 14th Street between Arapahoe Avenue and Canyon Boulevard.
The Boulder Transit Center Area Improvements will provide better access and accommodations for buses, bicycles, and pedestrians, including:
- saw tooth bus bays for improved transit operations and passenger access;
- crosswalk bulb-outs to shorten pedestrian crossing distances;
- new urban design elements throughout the area; and
- through-traffic restrictions to minimize conflicts.
BTC before improvements
To enhance the efficiency of bus operations and increase pedestrian safety, the one-block section of 14th Street between Walnut Street and Canyon Boulevard has been permanently closed to auto traffic.
“The Boulder Transit Center improvements are made possible through regional cooperation and in direct response to community input,” states RTD Board Director Chuck Sisk, District O. “This is a vital bus transit hub that will see more than 600 scheduled bus departures daily.”
“With these improvements, the Boulder Transit Center is better prepared to accommodate the regional service increases anticipated with the addition of FasTracks Bus Rapid Transit on US 36,” said Director of Public Works for Transportation Tracy Winfree. “We appreciate passengers’ patience during the construction of these enhancements.”

Free transportation will be provided to flood victims seeking disaster center help
Sep 22nd
Increased traffic and the lack of transportation options in the mountains and foothills of Boulder County continues to be a problem for our residents and road & utility work crews. Similarly, residents impacted by the flood may have difficulty getting to one of the disaster assistance centers, either in Boulder or Longmont.
In order to alleviate some of the congestion and isolation issues of getting to and from Boulder from our mountain communities, and to assist residents getting to or from a disaster assistance center, VIA, RTD, City of Boulder and Boulder County are working together to provide accessible transportation options for plains and mountain residents affected by the flood.
Transportation to/from Disaster Assistance Centers and for basic needs
From Sept. 21 through Oct. 17, Boulder County’s nonprofit Via Mobility Services will provide flood victims with free on-demand transportation to Boulder County’s disaster assistance centers, as long as Via staff can safely reach the pickup locations. This free service will also be provided to the disaster assistance center in Estes Park. To schedule a ride, call 303-447-9636 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Via will also provide free on-demand transportation for any flood victim in its service area to access healthcare, food, employment, or other essential services to help stabilize their lives. Via can also provide information about mobility options and referral to other transportation resources that may be available in local communities. Call 303-447-2848 ext. 1014 or email egallegos@viacolorado.org for more information.
Mountain community transportation updates
Beginning Monday, Sept. 23:
- The Climb bus will resume service with a modified route from Gold Hill Road through Sunshine Canyon Drive to the Boulder Transit Center. The Climb is operated by Via. Please see www.the-climb.org for additional route and schedule information.
- In collaboration with RTD and Boulder County, Via will also provide two mid-day routes from Boulder to Nederland through Sunshine Canyon Drive using four-wheel-drive paratransit vehicles.
- RTD’s reconstituted large coach N route, will provide early morning and late afternoon between Nederland and Boulder via Highway 119 and Blackhawk. See www.viacolorado.org or www.rtd-denver.com for more information.

Open house for proposed #Boulder Transit Center area improvements
Mar 9th
The City of Boulder is evaluating a variety of options for multimodal transportation improvements to the Boulder Transit Center area on 14th Street, between Canyon Boulevard and Walnut Street (in and around the area where the current RTD transit center is located).
The public is invited to attend an open house on Monday, March 12, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building lobby, 1777 Broadway, to review a variety of concepts currently being considered as part of this project.
The project, which will be jointly funded by the City of Boulder Capital Improvement Bond and a Colorado Department of Transportation FASTER grant, has the following goals:
- Improve bus access, capacity and circulation;
- Improve pedestrian safety, access and experience;
- Enhance the streetscape and landscaping in the area;
- Enhance the transit passenger drop-off zone;
- Improve bicycle access and parking;
- Minimize impacts to automobile parking and circulation; and
- Improve the character and utility of the existing transit center.
For those unable to attend the March 12 open house, meeting materials and an online comment form are available atwww.bouldertransportation.net.
For more information about the open house and options being considered for Boulder Transit Center area improvements, contact Cris Jones at 303-441-3217.
This project is partially funded by the city’s Capital Improvement Bond, which is the result of a 2011 ballot item that voters approved, giving the city the authority to issue a bond to address significant deficiencies and high priority infrastructure improvements throughout Boulder.
