Boulder Ice cream Incentives

Jane S. Brautigam, City Manager, has approved a flexible rebate application for Boulder-based Boulder Ice Cream for up to $25,000 in rebates. The rebates were authorized for sales and use taxes and permit-related fees.
The flexible rebate program is one of the City of Boulder’s business incentives, covering a wide range of fees, equipment, and construction use taxes. Under this program, the city manager may consider a specific incentive package for tax and fee rebates to meet a local company’s specific needs. The company is then eligible for the rebate after it has made its investment and paid the taxes or fees to the city.
“Boulder Ice Cream bringing manufacturing back to Boulder and continuing to expand its product lines is wonderful for Boulder,” Brautigam said. “Boulder Ice Cream has its roots here and embodies Boulder’s sustainable values and its strong natural and organic products industry.”
Boulder Ice Cream began as a scoop shop on the Pearl Street Mall in 1992 and currently manufactures and distributes to more than 300 grocery stores and 80 food service establishments. Boulder Homemade, Inc. manufactures Boulder Ice Cream, Yoki Bliss frozen yogurt, and Figo! Organic Gelato, one of the first organic gelatos on the market. Boulder Ice Cream will move its headquarters to a new space at 3220 Prairie Ave. and consolidate its manufacturing from two plants in Louisville and Denver into its new organic-certified facility in Boulder.

BPD: Chief Beckner moving on

Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner today announced his retirement effective April 1 after 36 years as a Boulder police officer. Beckner joined the department in 1978 as a patrol officer, became a detective, sergeant, hostage negotiator, commander, including commander of the SWAT team, and, in 1998, was selected as Boulder’s police chief.

“Throughout Chief Beckner’s career, he has served with honor and integrity,” said City Manager Jane Brautigam. “His commitment helped to define the culture of the Boulder Police Department and what our community expects from its public servants. I am very grateful to have had Mark’s counsel and experience as we dealt with community emergencies from wildfires to last year’s enormous flood, and as we worked to make Boulder a safer community. Through his leadership, we have built a strong police department that will continue to serve and protect the community for years to come.”
During Beckner’s tenure as chief, the Police Department opened the Communications Center, implemented the motorcycle traffic unit, received Colorado Accreditation through the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police, created the Major Crimes Unit, oversaw the planning and construction of the police training center and firearms range, brought Animal Control Services and Code Enforcement under the department, and worked with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to create, fund, and staff a CBI DNA lab in the Boulder Police Department.
“It has been a privilege and an honor to serve Boulder,” said Beckner. “Over the past 36 years, we’ve covered a lot of ground from riots to Presidential visits, but what I will treasure most is the interactions and support from the community as we faced tragedies and celebrated successes together. “Boulder has been a very rewarding career,” he said. “I am very appreciative to have served with so many fine men and women who helped build a strong, honorable department. And while it’s difficult to close this final chapter of a long and exciting career in law enforcement, I know that the department is in very capable hands, and I’m looking forward to new opportunities in my future.”
Over the next few weeks, Brautigam will be working with the police and city human resources departments to develop a search process for Boulder’s next police chief.

City Manager Jane S. Brautigam has approved a flexible rebate application for Boulder-based Gnip for up to $45,000 in rebates. The rebates were authorized for sales and use taxes, and permit-related fees.
“Gnip is a fast-growing company in Boulder’s thriving downtown and high-tech communities,” Brautigam said. “The city is very pleased that it can support Gnip’s expansion so it can grow as an industry leader, delivering three billion social media activities per day.”

Gnip is the largest provider of social data in the world, partnering with Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and WordPress, among others, to aggregate social media data and information for their clients. Founded in 2008, the company has emerged as a leader in the social media industry. With 50 employees, Gnip recently expanded into a new space at 1050 Walnut, Suite 115, to maintain its presence in downtown Boulder. In addition, Gnip was named “best place to work” by both the Boulder Chamber and the Denver Business Journal.
“We’re excited to be a based in Boulder and we think our growth is facilitated by the many advantages offered by the City of Boulder”, said Gnip CEO Jud Valeski. “We think Boulder offers the world’s best place to work and live.”
The flexible rebate program uses social, community, and environmental sustainability guidelines. Companies choose the guidelines that best fit their circumstances, but must meet minimum requirements in order to receive the rebate. Gnip has exceeded the requirements and, of note, the company has initiated the Gnip Gives Back program. This program coordinates charitable giving and organizes group service opportunities for the company to participate in. Gnip also offers Eco Passes, Boulder B-Cycle memberships, and annual City of Boulder Recreation passes to their employees and is located in a LEED Gold certified building.
Gnip’s application is approved as part of the 2012 flexible rebate program; one application is still pending. The city’s approved 2012 budget includes $350,000 in funding for 2012 flexible tax and fee rebates for primary employers.
