Deadline approaching for public input to Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Jan 6th
The deadline for submitting recommendations and signing up for the Advisory Team is Wednesday, Jan. 12. Guidelines and submission forms are available at www.BoulderCountyCWPP.org.
“We have already received many important recommendations from residents on our website,” said Jim Webster, Community Wildfire Protection Planner in the Boulder County Land Use Department. “However, we know there are others who have come up with noteworthy ideas during this past year that have not yet shared their recommendations.”
Topics of the recommendations received to date include improving communication, planning evacuation and access routes, educating the public on wildfire mitigation, installing fire danger signs, collecting slash, funding fire suppression, and declaring and enforcing county fire bans.
“After this past year, not many initiatives are of equal importance,” Advisory Team member Kitty Stevenson said. “It is really exciting to see a community plan being developed on a larger countywide scale. It is important that people from all parts of Boulder County participate.”
2010 Kids Holiday Bike Give-Away #boulder from Community Bike Share; story and video
Dec 12th
The Kids’ Holiday Bike Giveaway is simple- all year Community Cycles takes in donated kids ’ bikes and puts them in a storage space. Starting in early December, we host “work nights” and volunteer mechanics work to get the kids’ bikes ride ready. When the day comes, we move the bikes over to Indoor Cycling. Meanwhile, we have been reaching out to the community in December to let needy families know that they can come get a free bike for their kids for the holidays.
Once the big day comes and the bikes are all ready to go, families line up at the door and get a number. There is a waiting area where refreshments are provided, and when their number is called, families come and select their bike(s). Kids do a test ride and get a final safety check on the bike and are ready to go!
To get one of 300 refurbished bikes
The parent or guardian of a child 10 and under must bring the following on the day of the event:
Each child’s most recent report card or birth certificate. There is a suggested donation of $25 per bicycle.
We will accept a birth certificate in lieu of report card for children not yet school-aged. If you have neither, a $25 fee will apply for each bike chosen.
How can you help
Donate Old Bikes
Each year we give away about 300 bikes all of which have been donated to Community Cycles. If you have unused bikes please drop them by our shop BEFORE the event during open hours.

County seeking input for Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Dec 1st
The county and its partners are seeking resident input in the form of recommendations to be included in the CWPP and volunteers to serve on the CWPP Advisory Team.
“This is an excellent opportunity for community members who want to make a difference in the aftermath of the Fourmile Canyon Fire,” said Brett Haberstick, Sunshine Fire Protection District Chief and CWPP team member. “Being involved in groups like the CWPP Advisory Team can translate into fewer homes lost and more lives saved during the next fire.”
Recommendations
Guidelines and a submission form are available online. “County residents have many good ideas for how best to protect their community,” said Jim Webster, Community Wildfire Protection Planner in the Boulder County Land Use Department. “We want the plan to include new, original ideas from residents.”
Advisory Team
The team will collect and prioritize the recommendations that are submitted. “In order to be successful, our planning process needs to engage a large number of residents,” Webster said. “Many people would like to serve on a board or committee, but they have never been asked. We are asking interested residents to volunteer for this effort and help their community.”
Members of the advisory team must attend four Wednesday night meetings and complete clearly defined “homework” assignments over a four-month period. More information and application instructions are also available online. No previous wildfire experience is required.
Recommendations and advisory team applications will be accepted until Jan. 12.
