Suspect in nearly a dozen robberies arrested

Boulder police have arrested the suspect investigators believe is responsible for a string of robberies in the city and in Boulder County. Alishan Yapoujian (DOB 11/23/1988) is in the Boulder County Jail after being arrested on a charge of Aggravated Robbery.
Boulder detectives have been working with other law enforcement agencies during the investigations. On New Year’s Eve, the Colorado State Patrol located the black Chevy Blazer that Boulder police were looking for in connection with a robbery at the Conoco gas station, located at 4742 Table Mesa Drive, and another gas station located in the county, which occurred on Dec. 29, 2013. The vehicle was located in Niwot, CO.

Detectives identified a male they believed was the getaway driver of the Blazer in the Conoco robbery. He was cooperative with police and investigators were able to obtain information about the robbery suspect, Alishan Yapoujian. Police are not identifying the suspected getaway driver at this time.
On Dec. 31, 2013, Boulder police partnered with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office to execute a search warrant of Yapoujian’s residence, along with a warrant for his arrest, in the 6300 block of Arapahoe.
Police believe Yapoujian is responsible for 10 robberies in the city of Boulder, as well as two other robberies in Boulder County. Those cases are still being investigated. The Boulder Police Department has been working closely with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, and it’s likely that more charges will be filed against Yapoujian. We also anticipate further arrests in this series of robberies.

Alleged serial bike thief gets caught

A serial thief who has stolen bikes from University of Colorado students on at least three occasions has been arrested. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wayne Willet Cron last week on an outstanding warrant requested by the University of Colorado Police Department. On June 6, 2013, the District Attorney’s Office charged Cron with three felonies – Theft between $1,000 to $20,000 (Class 4 felony), Theft By Receiving (Class 4 felony) and Providing False Information to a Pawnbroker (Class 6 felony).
Cron, a 40-year-old transient, was also arrested in 2005 and 2010 for stealing bikes from CU students. In the most recent case, a CU student reported that someone had cut a cable lock on Jan. 17, 2013, near the Ekeley Sciences Building to steal his brand-new $3,000 Cannondale mountain bike.
On March 23, 2013, the victim contacted UCPD to say he found his bike listed for sale on the eBay website. A YouTube video on that site briefly showed part of the bike’s serial number, which matched the victim’s stolen bike. UCPD detectives contacted the listed seller, a Denver pawnshop, and learned that Cron sold the Cannondale bike to the pawnshop on Jan. 17, 2013 – the same day of the reported theft. On that day, Cron signed documents stating he had owned the bike for one year and acknowledged that providing false information was a felony.
UCPD recovered the bike and returned it to the rightful owner. UCPD requested that a judge approve an arrest warrant for Cron. The suspect has an extensive criminal history in five states, including arrests for burglary, larceny and pawn violations.
“The keys to solving this case started with the victim knowing his bike’s serial number and ended with solid detective work,” said CU-Boulder police spokesman Ryan Huff. “It’s critical that CU students register their bikes so they can be more easily located if stolen. This case also shows that cable locks are easily defeated. U-locks are a better option for securing your bike.”
The CU Police Department asks students, faculty and staff to register their bicycle’s serial number at the CU Bike Station, just east of the University Memorial Center. If their bikes are ever stolen, police have a better chance of finding them by accessing a nationwide database. Boulder police officer to face attempted first degree murder charge
Boulder police have issued an arrest warrant for Boulder police officer Christian McCracken, who has been in custody at the Broomfield County Jail since he was arrested last weekend on domestic violence-related charges.
McCracken had previously sustained a head injury at the hands of Trevan Hunter, a CU student who’d refuse to to leave The Sink, a popular Boulder restaurant, or pay his $3 bar tab.
McCracken was arrested by Broomfield police in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 28 after allegedly stalking and harassing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, both of whom are dispatchers at the Boulder Police Department.
At the time of McCracken’s arrest, Boulder police began a criminal investigation into information that he may have planned and taken a significant step toward committing a homicide against the new boyfriend. After consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, it was agreed that probable cause existed to obtain an additional arrest warrant.

“While we are concerned and saddened by the need to arrest one of our own officers, we are primarily focused with the safety of our employees and members of the community,” said Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner. “As information became available, it became increasingly apparent that we needed to act quickly. Our detectives, in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, did a great job in putting this case together.”
McCracken was arrested at the Broomfield County Jail this morning on new charges of suspicion of Attempted First Degree Murder (one count), two counts of Stalking and one count of Harassment.
The case number is 12-5679.
At this time, McCracken will remain in custody at the Broomfield County Jail. His bond has been set at $500,000. Boulder police are also conducting an internal personnel investigation into the case.
