Boulder Art and Jazz Fest May 5-6
0
The 7th annual Boulder Arts, Craft and Jazz Festival kicked off today Saturday May 5th and runs through Sunday May 7. It features music all day from a main stage on the Pearl Street Mall at the court house. Other musicians are spread up and down the mall. There are literally hundreds of arts and crafts tents from one end of the mall to the other. Interspersed are food tents with everything from Mexican, Oriental to American.
It was a beautiful day on Saturday at the festival with a friendly relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a Boulder old school event. A lot of Boulderites were present with a fine mixture of tourists. This is the big event of the year that kicks off summer in Downtown Boulder.
The event is promoted by the folks from the Dickens Store who started the original Bands on the Bricks many years ago They really know how to put on a family event. You don’t want to miss this one because it was not a crush of people who have been drinking all day. Of course the bars and restaurants are all open on Pearl Street and they were packed with festival goers as well.
The theme is early 1969 Woodstock and for those of you who were there, it is all love, peace and music at the The 7th annual Boulder Art and Jazz Festival. The music is excellent too. Bands played all day today and will start on the stage at 11:00 am til 6:30 pm: see the line up below. This appears to be the largest authentic music festival in Boulder. There are some others but they take place in theaters and bars and not on one stage. The Boulder Creek Festival is of course the very largest muical event just 3 weeks away on Memorial Day weekend with 5 music and dance stages. But Sunday afternoon will be the highlight of the festival.
The event is a charity event for Olive Branch a non-prot organization which brings resources and opportunities to widows and orphans in Rwanda and Uganda. They are active in building Orphanages, Medical Clinics and Schools in this country!

We are the media like it or not Jann Scott’s Journal #boulder
0I say we. It is a term often used when referring to a media organization, personality or product. I am a “me” and I am also a “we”. Jann Scott the writer is a me I suppose, since it is me that is writing here. Except I appear in a network. I am supported by a network of people.
Jann Scott the
talk show host doesn’t exist a lone either. I have always appeared on a radio station with support staff or a satellite network with even more support. In TV I have worked at stations or cable channels either live or on tape never alone always with a team.
Today I host 22Boom on cable channel 22 here in Boulder. It takes approximately 6 people to produce each episode plus an editor or two, and the staff at channel 22 to get it on the air. Even a Jann Scott Live segment inside of 22Boom takes at least 4 people to produce. After all of that is done the show simultaneously appears on Boulder Channel 1 and all the Channel One Networks. Then it is touted on You tube, twitter and Face book.
Boulder Channel One and all the Channel One Networks are an even bigger under taking with contributions by hundreds of people, hundreds of channels, 1000s of viewers and fans and unfans.
Fans are the topic of todays Journal. With the advent of Social Media the waters have murkied a bit and it is up to me up to us to not get murked in the muck as Dan Culberson likes to say. Social Media and the Internet have produced a lot of so called citizen journalists of which I am not one. I am not saying I am better I am just saying I am not them. Neither are we. Our (my) fans are often social media types who are not me either. I (we) use social media as a conveyor belt into the general populous. And though the perception may be that we are Tweeps, we are not. We are separate from. There is a whole other world that could care less about Twitter or the internet. They watch TV, read the paper and don’t give a crap about sm.
We are media. I am media with a traditional outlook and management. It’s just that we are “new media” , but media just the same. So I may seem like a person to you or Boulder Channel 1 may appear to be some guy just like every twitter gal or guy blogger is someone representing only themselves…we aren’t that.
I mean, if fans want to perceive me that way it’s Okay. I guess. It is our unfans, the jealous ones who like to complain. But I try to not pay attention. But it is hard not to because they are fans or unfans. I know we have done our job when even they don’t know or they think we are down to their level: sniveling children.
I once had some unfans go on a tear about how we were not real which was interesting to watch on the internet. Recently when Steve Jobs died an executive at at a PR firm wrote to me screaming because he didn’t like our tribute. He went so far as to threaten to ruin me. That was a bit out of character for a pr firm who usually try to sell me something. We determined that the PR exec must have been drunk the night he wrote to us because his personal profile says he starts and ends his day with beer.Cause to threaten to ruin a talk show host or TV network is just as flattering as a praise.
This is a trap I occasionally fall into …deep. The trap is to write in forums and not on TV. Jo Anne Ostrowe the Denver Post TV writer once asked me during an interview.. “what’s this we thing Jann?” I avoided her stupid question as she continued to write about us.
We always have to remind young people when they come to work here what the rules are. 1st rule is that this isn’t social media and you are not a fan here. The rules here are you are now working for a media organization and we demand 100% loyalty. Which means no working for any other media outlet, no personal blogs, video outside of the network. We want you to build your creativity here, but you don’t get to moonlight or think you run the place, we do. That doesn’t always set well with the new sm types, but fortunately , there are plenty of network trad kids out there who love it. Just thought I’d clear that up
from the oo koo ka choo Capitol of America

Boulder Police chief Mark Beckner asks media vampires to “would you Please!”
0Jann Scott Live from CATV 54 taking on News media 1997
In the late 1990s then police chief Tom Koby tried to reel the news media in over their frenzy feed coverage of the JonBennet murder. It back fired. Mark Beckner is all to aware of that episode and is cautious to repeat the tenor of that kind of reprimand. We did many Jann Scott Live TV shows about the news media rape of Boulder during that time.
One recommendation we have to Chief Beckner is for the Boulder PD to put up Media information on their website. The following is Mark Beckners’ letter to the media:
Dear members of the media:
As you know, we are a mid-size agency in a college town with lots of activity that tends to draw media attention. Unfortunately, we only have one PIO. While we take our media relationships, opportunities and responsibilities seriously, it is not reasonable to ask or expect one person to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have established some guidelines in the past with previous PIO’s and identified procedures the media should follow in getting updates or information after hours. Over time, and as turnover has occurred, these procedures have not been utilized. Although not new, I’d like to remind everyone of what these procedures are.
- · Our PIO is generally available (303-441-3370) and happy to help you with all your inquiries during normal working hours (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with the exception of holidays and vacation). If you would like an update on a major case, we request that you call toward the end of the normal work day (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm) to obtain the latest information, rather than waiting until the evening hours to call. If not immediately available during business hours, our PIO will get back to you as soon as possible.
- · If you have routine questions or want some information on something that has happened or is happening after hours, the proper procedure is to call our dispatch center at 303-441-3333. Dispatch will field your request and forward it to an on-duty supervisor who will get back to you as soon as he/she can. Calling our PIO after hours is not helpful, as she is unlikely to have immediate access to the information.
- · We recommend that weekend reporters look ahead for stories they may wish to cover on the weekends and conduct any necessary interviews in advance. Unless something new develops or assistance is requested by an incident commander, our PIO will not be available for standup interviews to help media organizations catch up on stories that occurred during the work week.
- · Should we have a major event or major crime develop after hours that we know will attract a lot of immediate media attention, or there is a public safety need to get the information out quickly, the incident commander will contact our PIO to assist with providing you with information in a timely manner. This may occur in the form of a press release and phone interviews or the PIO responding to the scene. If the PIO is not available, someone will be assigned to act as a PIO for the particular incident, usually a Sergeant or Commander
- · If you need a copy of a closed or cleared report, you may contact our Records and Information Services unit (RIS) at 303-441-3300. This number may be called
at any time of day as RIS is typically available 24 hours a day (except some holidays). RIS is the only unit that can release reports. Calling the PIO for a copy of a report can actually take more time, as she has to relay the request to RIS for processing. The RIS staff will be able to tell you if the report is available to the public. Reports on open investigations are generally not available to the public. Our PIO can answer questions about individual cases or provide general information, but is not expected to read case reports to
reporters over the phone.
Please know that it is unlikely that an after-hours on-duty supervisor will be able to give you updates on cases being investigated by detectives or those that occurred on a previous shift. For these situations, it is best to check in with the PIO during regular hours. If something new should happen in one of these types of cases after hours and immediate release of this information is necessary, the detective commander will contact the PIO and ask her to alert you.
We are committed to be as informative as possible and we greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with you on communicating important public safety information. These procedures are intended to help meet your needs while recognizing the staffing limitations of our department.
Please let me know if you have any questions about these procedures. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

22 Boom and Jann Scott now M-F 9p,7a, midnite
0It is a bleeding miracle alright. Jann Scotts 22 Boom is in its third year on Boulders Educational Access Channel 22 on Comcast cable throughout Boulder County. But now it is on Monday through Friday in a prime time slot at 9:00 pm with repeats at midnite. Just like Dave, Jay, Conan, Bill, Anderson and the local news. What is unusual for Boulder is that some one at channel 22 was on the ball enough to understand “stripped in grid programming” for popular shows. Scotts 22 Boom is not the only show now on a grid. Democracy now, Link TV, Teen News all have regular time slots.

Arron Smith Web editing
The difference with Scott and 22 Boom is that it is all locally produced. In fact Jann Scott has been producing regular local television for Boulder virtually every since 1989 sometimes in the face often tremendous opposition from local government who often sought to censor Scotts programs or prohibit them altogether. His struggles to remain on the air are legendary around Boulder and in broadcast circles around the state. He’s Boulders very own Jack Parr. Legend has it he drove several station managers, a mayor and several city council members out of Boulder. Those who have ever battled Scott will attest as one former Colorado Daily editor stated:” I’d sooner fight a Hitler SS amoured division than cross Jann Scott”
At channel 22 , a director said ” I know he has a reputation for being a fighter, but maybe that is a good thing. We’ve never seen anything but professionalism and quality programs out of him”

Heather Loser news
But 22 Boom seems more tamed down than the old Jann Scott Live show on CATV 54 where Scott pulled wild antics to the howling regal of college kids and shock and horror to old folks. One things for sure 22Boom made a Nielsen trend this week with calls coming in again from the likes of J Walter Thompson. Congrats to the whole crew at 22Boom. They deserve it.

Dan Culberson movie reviewer.
The new 22 Boom show has evolved into a price bit cultural phenom. This week 22Boom feature a 30 minute educational program on ” Rick Rolling” which is just hysterical. It comes out on April 1.
22Boom features Scott as host, a Jann Scott Live segment, a tech news segment delivered by a hip young female actor who spoofs the news, a science segment, Movie reviews, a music video. Quite a bit actually. Boulder Valley School district couldn’t be happier with Scott’s 22Boom. In three years they have only sung praises about the shows quality, relativeness and appeal to young people and old alike. Quite a switch from when the city had their paws in every decision.

Pottery Lab will close at 5 p.m. #boulderfire, twitter bullys , Evacuations Can we go home yet
0Pottery Lab will close at 5 p.m.
The Pottery Lab will close at 5 p.m. on Friday can we go home yet?, Oct. 29, as a result of the Dome Fire burning west of Boulder:
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring the Boulder County Emergency Management website at http://www.boulderoem.com/emergency-status for further information and evacuation updates.
Evacuations are still in effect, but a huge number of air water attacks before dark will help to ensure that the fire remains on the ground and close to extinction. There is some discussion right now as to whether resident will be allowed back in to their homes in some evac area. according to Sarah Huntley OEM media the lifting evacuations were being discussed regularly, but no decision had been made to do so as of yet. 1700 people have been evacuated in the city with over 800 units including the Senior center on Walnut. Evacuation are goes from Canyon to North Street and 7th west.
The fire has not been a catastrophic threat since early this afternoon as reported by Boulder Channel 1. With the winds calm and rigorous fire fighting efforts, the worst had passed by 1:00.
According to Sarah Huntley at OEM “ This fire is not nearly as dangerous as the Fourmile Fire where the wind were a factor. ” Our hope is the fire will settle down this evening” she said. It has not spread beyond it’s 139 acres for several hours….and we see that as a good sign. Over 29 agencies and 165 firemen are on the scene. she said. We do not need federal help for this fires Huntley said.
Huntley did say the fire has not crossed Sunshine, is not on Mt Sanitas and remains South of Sun Shine Canyon though there was a lot of smoke up on Sanitas.
Social Media in Boulder went nuts today with much gossip going on by local techies where they descended into cyber bullying. This will be the topic of a special Jann Scott Live on Boulder Channel 1 at 8:00 pm tonight. The bullying started out with young marketing women and then spread to their male counterparts. Twitter is primarily a womens social media tool has become a form of watching soap operas gone ary.

4 Reasons PR Agencies Are Failing in Social Media: Hire BC1 and save your self a lost fortune: We were the first
04 Reasons PR Agencies Are Failing in Social Media
A couple of weeks ago, Jason Keath wrote a post that got many thoughtful comments and reactions. I agree that good communication professionals understand the power of storytelling and know that relationship building is a worthy activity and work on action steps to develop good relationships.
Indeed, a retainer arrangement is a good way to go in social media. Especially if you need to ramp up your own people over time, and have constant needs and request, it will cost you less to go that way. Plus, it will help you maintain consistency.
And if you’re worried your people will screw up — customers or employees, they are people and they might — PR agencies may also provide crisis communications counsel and services. Of course, not all are known for doing a stellar job at it, and the expert may be a different one from your day to day team.
At this point, you may have already realized how dangerous generalizations can be. You may have a bigger relationship with a digital agency, in that case they’d know your business better, for example. Depending on your research needs, PR agencies may be ill equipped to deal with segmentation analysis. I’m digressing…
To his 4 reasons PR agencies are taking over social media, I’d like to list 4 reasons PR agencies are failing in social media:
(1.) PR is having a hard time letting go of the pitchWhen we accept that PR agencies do relationship building, we’re making one ginormous assumption — that the process of reaching out to mainstream media, which they do based upon reach and numbers, is the exact same with bloggers.
How do they know your blog is worth reaching out to on behalf of their client? By and large because it’s listed on a top bloggers list. They know nothing about your readers, how could they if they have taken no time to interact with them in the comments to your posts? Or reading enough of them in the first place.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the advice many of us have given PR pros about pitching story angles — know the subject matter the blogger likes to cover, read their blog, etc. While this is still valid, I’m thinking that there is one fundamental disconnect we have probably not communicated well enough or with enough clarity — the best kind of pitch is not a pitch at all, it’s a conversation.
How many agencies take the time to be truly helpful to the bloggers they’d consider in their clients’ sweet spot? I still see a ton of canned emails and the most annoying follow ups that read like their clients are entitled to coverage.
Case in point: a blogger who finds your pitch offensive, or tactless, decides to post it with their take on how you could have just spent more time getting to know them and their readers. What then?
(2.) PR is having a hard time learning the client’s businessSocial media is very content intensive. It’s also about learning about how to write content for the digital medium. It’s not about making introductions anymore. It’s about learning the business deeply enough to be able to generate content with or in some cases on behalf of the client.
The model is shifting, there are fewer mainstream media outlets and thousands of online properties without enough editors/writers or with editors who won’t get on the phone with a subject matter expert because they have no time. And the time lines are getting ridiculously short.
Knowing your client’s business will help you shorten time lines, or answer questions on the fly when a blogger replies they’re interested. And more and more, you may need to step in to help clients shape their own publications.
Case in point: the client is interested in you leading their social media efforts and all you can do is ask to get on painfully long phone calls with their subject matter experts to gather information so you can write posts. How do you handle ghost writing questions when you hit publish? How do you handle writing for digital media?
(3.) PR is still having a hard time with measurementWith a few rare exceptions, like the work KD Paine has been doing for decades, PR agencies have still not gotten their act together when it comes to measurement. Yes, they may be better at monitoring and listening, and now probably sentiment analysis.
They still need to learn to move away from impressions, and into how to correlate social ecosystems, influence analysis, and digital media to business results. I’m not talking about leads, PR is not designed to generate leads, you have lead generation for that. However, you may make connections. Connections are good.
Does your PR agency know how to put the public back in PR measurement? Do they report beyond exposure to engagement, influence on perceptions and attitudes, action resulted from the social media effort?
Case in point: check you reports and do let me know if you get those other metrics. I’d be thrilled to add an update to this post if we identify a trend here.
(4.) PR is still stuck with media while publics go underserved
By treating bloggers like media outlets, PR agencies are still failing to see beyond the media relations part of their charter. For many, it’s probably also a case of educating clients on the value of building relationships with all stakeholders or resetting the expectation they helped create.
Today, many of those publics are direct customers for the client business. An enterprising agency would find a way to work with data bases and cross reference stakeholders with bloggers, influencers, and people who use social media.
Social media tends to have them all in one stream, without differentiation. Sothe best data base wins. Have PR agencies learned how to build efficient data bases? Being human and getting creative also get attention beyond media. Something PR agencies are still learning about themselves.
Case in point: ask any PR professional if they do this and they’ll say that of course they do. To that, I say bullocks. They will support an internal visionary who does.
***
The biggest reason of course, is that I believe social media should be handled in house and not by any one agency. Sure, they can get you set up and started, help with training, support measurement and the creation of other assets to share and provide through social media.
These fours are the main reason why no agencies will ever supplant an internal team. They can augment and support it. Replace it? Forget about it.
