Family, friends and colleagues are mourning the loss of Officer Bonnie Verstraete, who passed away early Wednesday.
Officer Verstraete joined the department in 2001 and distinguished herself over the years as a role model to many other officers. She was one of the initial members of Boulder County’s Meth Lab Response Team, and in 2007, became the department’s first female certified bomb technician. She remained an active and enthusiastic member of the bomb team until her death. Officer Verstraete was nominated twice for the prestigious Beth Haynes Memorial Award for exemplary work with domestic violence victims. She also served as a Police Training Officer, helping to prepare new officers for patrol work and leadership.
Officer Verstraete came to her love of law enforcement naturally. Her father, retired Chief of Police George Forth, also served in Colorado for 28 years. Her sister, Sgt. Rebecca Forth, currently serves at Atlantic City Police Department in New Jersey.
“Officer Verstraete will be remembered as a dedicated officer who served our community well and touched many lives during her nine years of service,” said Police Chief Mark Beckner. “She broke new ground when she joined our Bomb Team and we are proud of the contributions she made. We will all sorely miss her.”
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 2:00 in the afternoon at the Calvary Bible Church, 3245 Kalmia Avenue, Boulder, CO.
