  • Flagstaff Mountain: the north side of Flagstaff Mountain will be closed (the Boy Scout Trail will remain open);

  • The Back Porch and The Box, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
  • Bear Creek Spire, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
  • Fern Canyon, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road  (the designated Fern Canyon hiking trail will remain open);
  • Shadow Canyon and the Matron, accessible from the South Mesa Trailhead (the Maiden will remain open and accessible from the east; the designated Shadow Canyon hiking trail will re-open in 2013 following post-fire maintenance);
  • The Sphinx, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
  • Diamond Head and SoBo Buttress, west of Shadow Canyon, accessible from South Mesa Trailhead (South Boulder Peak Trail will remain open);
  • The entire Mickey Mouse wall, accessible from the Goshawk Ridge Trail.

High-quality cliff habitat and rich food resources on OSMP lands, as well as community cooperation in protecting nesting sites, sustains the mountain backdrop as a regionally important area for nesting falcons and golden eagles. OSMP volunteers and staff have been monitoring raptor nesting and roosting areas since 1984, and the program is an integral part of efforts to protect the species and adaptively manage the closures.

Trespassing violations can result in a summons with penalties up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.  OSMP relies heavily on the public to respect the closures, and the cooperation of visitors to these areas is greatly appreciated. Closures may be lifted early, if no raptor activity is observed at these sites.

Some modifications have occurred to the Flagstaff and The Sphinx raptor closures. Please visit Open Space and Mountain Parks’ website at www.osmp.org for detailed maps and up-to-date information on raptor closures or call 303-441-3440.

Search is on for possibly suicidal man in Left Hand Cañon

Boulder man may be armed; sheriff’s deputy sidelined during search with heat stroke
This morning, July 23, 2012 at approximately 9:50 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of Lefthand Canyon to look for a reported missing/suicidal person out of the City of Boulder.  The 20 year-old male hadn’t been heard from since yesterday (July 22, 2012) afternoon, so family members contacted the Boulder Police to report him missing.  They indicated recently he had been despondent and in his last message told them his vehicle was parked in Lefthand Canyon.
Initially, when deputies arrived in the area they located the missing person’s vehicle and observed somebody matching his description running from the vehicle.  In checking the vehicle they found items that indicated he might be armed with a firearm and for this reason additional resources were requested, which included members of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Sheriff’s K-9 teams.
A search of the area was conducted and the missing person has not been found.  The search for the missing person will continue as long as there is enough light to search safely.  The sheriff’s office will reevaluate tomorrow whether to continue the search based on the information obtained from today’s search.
Also assisting the Sheriff’s office were members of Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Lefthand Fire Protection District, Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District, Boulder Emergency Squad, Ward Town Marshal’s Office and American Medical Response Ambulance Service.
Initially, as a precautionary measure Lefthand Canyon Drive was closed to traffic from the 900 block of Lefthand Canyon to James Canyon for approximately four hours.  Lefthand Canyon drive has been reopened to normal vehicle and bicycle traffic, although teams remain in the area searching.
During the search, a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office was evacuated with assistance from members of the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, after he suffered complications from the heat.  He was transported to Boulder Community Hospital where he is currently being treated.

July 7 – 5:20 p.m. – Boulder Creek flows expected to increase

With the heavy rainfall this afternoon, the City of Boulder is expecting to see an increase in Boulder Creek water levels. Last night, the creek was running at 161 cfs. It is currently at 287 cfs and is likely to run between 500 and 600 cfs by nightfall. This is not expected to cause significant spillage along the banks, but pedestrians and cyclists in the area are urged to use caution. Please remember that it is not safe to seek shelter under bridges or in other underpasses. These are designed to move floodwaters through and can be very dangerous in these conditions.

The city is also receiving some reports of nuisance street flooding in the Table Mesa area and a few other neighborhoods. Safety officials would like to remind motorists to avoid driving through floodwaters, which can be deeper than they may seem.
