“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” Makes the Impossible Possible
0“Making the Impossible Possible”
“Hotshots” looks at a movie!
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a love story, and I don’t mean the love that fishermen have for fishing, although there is also that.
On the other hand, Steven Wright says in his act, “There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore looking like an idiot.”
In this movie, the comment is made that the only thing that fishermen care about is fish, and that they are patient and virtuous.
The fishermen, of course, are patient and virtuous, not the fish.
No, we should remember that fish are so dumb that they can’t tell the difference between a real fly and an artificial fly with a hook in it at the end of a fishing line.
Emily Blunt plays Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, and she has a client who is an avid fisherman, Sheik Muhammed from Yemen, who wants to introduce salmon fishing in his desert country.
So, Harriet contacts the salmon expert in the British Fisheries, Dr. Alfred Jones, played by Ewan McGregor, to ask for his help in fulfilling the dream of the sheik, who naturally has enough money to make it happen.
Dr. Jones turns down Harriet’s request, telling her that the project is fundamentally infeasible.
In the meantime, however, Patricia Maxwell, who is the press secretary for the Prime Minister and who is played by Kristin Scott Thomas, tells her people, “We need a good news story from the Middle East and a big one. We need it now.”
So, with pressure from the top of the government, Dr. Jones is practically blackmailed into working with Harriet to make Sheik Muhammed’s dream come true.
And with two attractive people working closely together, romantic sparks are bound to fly, right?
Not so fast, Dear Audience, because Dr. Jones is married, and Harriet has a serious boyfriend.
Dr. Jones changes his assessment of the project’s success from fundamentally infeasible to theoretically possible, the sheik is willing to pay 50 million pounds, and so the problem now is to make it all happen.
Did I mention that there are dissidents in Yemen who believe that the sheik’s dream of building a river in the desert and stocking it with fish is insulting to Allah?
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen makes the impossible possible in so many different ways, and not just in fishing.
I’m Dan Culberson and this is “Hotshots.”

Gas Prices set to go up 40 cents in few days $5.00 by Memorial Day
0
From Info Wars:
Kurt Nimmo
February 24, 2011
Earlier this week, market analysts warned that the price of gas may reach $5 by the end of summer. Now they are saying we could see that price by Memorial Day as the situation in Libya deteriorates.
On the S&P 500 today, the price of Brent Crude breached $119 a barrel during a period of frantic trading. Brent Crude is used to price two thirds of the world’s internationally traded crude oil supplies. The price was below $100 yesterday afternoon.
The world’s oil benchmark jumped almost $17 this week and it appears there is no end in sight as the situation in the Middle East heats up.
Saudi Arabia is under pressure to boost output as the prospect of a Libya production cutoff looms.
Oil traders said Saudi talks with Europe signal that the oil kingdom understands that the political crisis in Libya is now an oil supply crisis.
On Thursday, the Italian oil company Eni, the most active company in Libya, said oil production from the North African country has dropped to just a quarter of normal levels.
“You can only expect the price to go up. It is fear of the unknown. The risks are all to the upside,” a senior oil trader told the Financial Times. “Saudi Arabia needs to respond.”
Popular uprisings spanning the Middle East have yet to seriously affect Saudi Arabia. In an effort to stave off rebellion, earlier in the week Saudi Arabia’s ailing King Abdullah promised to lavish around $37 billion on his subjects. The money will go for housing, education, social security, and other benefits.
In neighboring Bahrain, a similar pay-out scheme failed to stem protests that turned violent. King Hamad had offered to pay $2,650 to every Bahraini family. The protests calling for political change have seriously damaged the small nation’s economy and tourism industry. Standard and Poor’s lowered its credit rating this week and Bahraini authorities canceled next month’s Bahrain Grand Prix Formula One race, the pride of the royal family.
According to Saudi rights activist Hassan al-Mustafa, Abdullah’s spending won’t solve anything. The Saudi people want “real change,” such as an elected parliament and more rights for women. That sort of evolution “will be the only guarantee of security of the kingdom,” explained al-Mustafa.
Hundreds of people have backed a Facebook campaign for a Saudi “day of rage” in March in response to the lack of political change in the kingdom and it solidarity with other popular rebellions sweeping the region.
In response to the unprecedented rise in oil prices, analysts are predicting the price of gasoline will shoot up ten to fifteen cents per gallon over the next few days.

Analytics economist Chris Lafakis put the number even higher. Oil prices have already jumped $12 this week, which means that drivers can “expect gas prices to be 37 cents higher” in the coming days, he told CNN.
The national average price of a gallon of gasoline rose 3.4 cents overnight to $3.228, according to AAA.

4 Reasons PR Agencies Are Failing in Social Media: Hire BC1 and save your self a lost fortune: We were the first
04 Reasons PR Agencies Are Failing in Social Media
A couple of weeks ago, Jason Keath wrote a post that got many thoughtful comments and reactions. I agree that good communication professionals understand the power of storytelling and know that relationship building is a worthy activity and work on action steps to develop good relationships.
Indeed, a retainer arrangement is a good way to go in social media. Especially if you need to ramp up your own people over time, and have constant needs and request, it will cost you less to go that way. Plus, it will help you maintain consistency.
And if you’re worried your people will screw up — customers or employees, they are people and they might — PR agencies may also provide crisis communications counsel and services. Of course, not all are known for doing a stellar job at it, and the expert may be a different one from your day to day team.
At this point, you may have already realized how dangerous generalizations can be. You may have a bigger relationship with a digital agency, in that case they’d know your business better, for example. Depending on your research needs, PR agencies may be ill equipped to deal with segmentation analysis. I’m digressing…
To his 4 reasons PR agencies are taking over social media, I’d like to list 4 reasons PR agencies are failing in social media:
(1.) PR is having a hard time letting go of the pitchWhen we accept that PR agencies do relationship building, we’re making one ginormous assumption — that the process of reaching out to mainstream media, which they do based upon reach and numbers, is the exact same with bloggers.
How do they know your blog is worth reaching out to on behalf of their client? By and large because it’s listed on a top bloggers list. They know nothing about your readers, how could they if they have taken no time to interact with them in the comments to your posts? Or reading enough of them in the first place.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the advice many of us have given PR pros about pitching story angles — know the subject matter the blogger likes to cover, read their blog, etc. While this is still valid, I’m thinking that there is one fundamental disconnect we have probably not communicated well enough or with enough clarity — the best kind of pitch is not a pitch at all, it’s a conversation.
How many agencies take the time to be truly helpful to the bloggers they’d consider in their clients’ sweet spot? I still see a ton of canned emails and the most annoying follow ups that read like their clients are entitled to coverage.
Case in point: a blogger who finds your pitch offensive, or tactless, decides to post it with their take on how you could have just spent more time getting to know them and their readers. What then?
(2.) PR is having a hard time learning the client’s businessSocial media is very content intensive. It’s also about learning about how to write content for the digital medium. It’s not about making introductions anymore. It’s about learning the business deeply enough to be able to generate content with or in some cases on behalf of the client.
The model is shifting, there are fewer mainstream media outlets and thousands of online properties without enough editors/writers or with editors who won’t get on the phone with a subject matter expert because they have no time. And the time lines are getting ridiculously short.
Knowing your client’s business will help you shorten time lines, or answer questions on the fly when a blogger replies they’re interested. And more and more, you may need to step in to help clients shape their own publications.
Case in point: the client is interested in you leading their social media efforts and all you can do is ask to get on painfully long phone calls with their subject matter experts to gather information so you can write posts. How do you handle ghost writing questions when you hit publish? How do you handle writing for digital media?
(3.) PR is still having a hard time with measurementWith a few rare exceptions, like the work KD Paine has been doing for decades, PR agencies have still not gotten their act together when it comes to measurement. Yes, they may be better at monitoring and listening, and now probably sentiment analysis.
They still need to learn to move away from impressions, and into how to correlate social ecosystems, influence analysis, and digital media to business results. I’m not talking about leads, PR is not designed to generate leads, you have lead generation for that. However, you may make connections. Connections are good.
Does your PR agency know how to put the public back in PR measurement? Do they report beyond exposure to engagement, influence on perceptions and attitudes, action resulted from the social media effort?
Case in point: check you reports and do let me know if you get those other metrics. I’d be thrilled to add an update to this post if we identify a trend here.
(4.) PR is still stuck with media while publics go underserved
By treating bloggers like media outlets, PR agencies are still failing to see beyond the media relations part of their charter. For many, it’s probably also a case of educating clients on the value of building relationships with all stakeholders or resetting the expectation they helped create.
Today, many of those publics are direct customers for the client business. An enterprising agency would find a way to work with data bases and cross reference stakeholders with bloggers, influencers, and people who use social media.
Social media tends to have them all in one stream, without differentiation. Sothe best data base wins. Have PR agencies learned how to build efficient data bases? Being human and getting creative also get attention beyond media. Something PR agencies are still learning about themselves.
Case in point: ask any PR professional if they do this and they’ll say that of course they do. To that, I say bullocks. They will support an internal visionary who does.
***
The biggest reason of course, is that I believe social media should be handled in house and not by any one agency. Sure, they can get you set up and started, help with training, support measurement and the creation of other assets to share and provide through social media.
These fours are the main reason why no agencies will ever supplant an internal team. They can augment and support it. Replace it? Forget about it.

Tonight 8:00pm Jann Scott Live show (almost) nightly http://wwwJannscottlive.com
0every night from our world headquarter studios here in Boulder. I haven’t done a weekly live show since 2005( live on channel 54 public access tv in Boulder from 1996 to 2005) and 1994 since I did a nightly live show on the old channel 36 in Denver. Before that it was am-710 KNUS the news station from 8:00 til midnight from 1990 to 1993, and 760 K-talk from 1987 to 1990. This time you can find me at http://www.Jannscottlive.com every night. Hey, am I crazy or what.? Daily blog and nightly show.? When it comes to live Talk whether it be TV or radio, I’m a pro and know what I am doing. I’ve had a lot of years doing it nightly……..and it is a blast. Well , at least doing some nights. I’ll figure it out. I think I just finally decided to do it after my friend Alice told me how much she enjoyed the show back before she knew me. Jeez. the movie Julie and Julia got me writing daily again. And now just one comment and I am doing live TV again. Aaron and Gabe used to run the old Live show at channel 54 at different times. They work on channel one networks now. we designed our internet TV channels 5 years ago.. in part so that I could do live TV with out having the government have a Cat every time I went off. But Oh my God was tonights show a hoot. First night back…right out of the box BAM! I got a caller at 7:55 who had just watched my segment on pot on 22Boom our video blog on channel 22. She was all wound up about the issue. So I put her on hold, intro’d the new show, went right to marijuana, then put the caller on.
Tonights show went well. We ran for an hour. ( my intention to run from 15 minutes to an hour)
I had a one hour caller with a lot to say about drugs and several bloggers on Justin. Steve came over and made a bunch of comments off camera but on mic and it filled out beautifully. Bloggers liked it.

0A Letter from Mark Milliman
Thank You for Your Effort on Boulder Fiber!!!
Steve, Alan, steve, Jann, Bryan, Seth, Jackson, Brad, Don, Elizabeth, Kaleb
Now that all of the hubbub over the RFI submission has calmed down, I wanted to take the time to thank all of you for your tremendous effort and talent put into the Boulder Fiber effort. We received many complements on the web site, artwork, and videos surrounding the effort. Those compliments belong to you guys. In a way our effort was a bit of a flash mob. We mobilized quickly and created a web site and awareness campaign in very little time with no real long-range planning. Although we wanted tens of thousands of nominations, we saw almost 20K hits to the web site, over 3,000 nominations, and a decent amount of followers on Twitter and Facebook. Comparing numbers we ended up in the 10 ten for awareness. All-in-all a very respectable showing.
The campaign continues. We submitted our RFI response two weeks ago and added some additional content to the web site. The response is available at boulderfiber.com/rfi. We will continue to post information there and keep an eye out for when Google starts looking at it. Keep encouraging people to visit the site and fill out step 1. We can still show Google that the community is still actively interested.
The whole advisory team thanks you for your effort and dedication to the project. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Thanks so much,
Mark

The City of Boulder learned earlier today that phony door hangers were distributed
0to some residents that appeared to be from the Environmental & Zoning Enforcement Office (EZEO) of the Public Works Department. The fake door hanger referenced sidewalk crack cleaning as a violation of municipal code citing 6-3-17 of the Boulder Revised Code (BRC).
There is no 6-3-17 in the BRC. There is no duty to keep the cracks in sidewalks, “free of dust and insect larvae.” This appears to be an April fool’s joke. If residents get a door hanger that references 6-3-17 BRC, please disregard and recycle.
While we recognize this may have been an attempt at humor, the City of Boulder would like to caution residents about making phony documents on behalf of the city and/or impersonating official city personnel. This could be a citable offense, in some situations. Misunderstandings can result in staff time that could be spent on other city and community priorities.
Residents can verify any tickets from EZEO by calling 303-441-3239.
