CU Women Vault To No. 19 In USA Today Sports Coaches Poll

BOULDER – The University of Colorado vaulted four spots, up to No. 19, in the USA Today Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.
Colorado, 22-5 overall and 11-5 in the Pac-12 Conference, received 182 points, nearly doubling last week’s total of 98. The Buffaloes have been in the coaches’ poll for seven-straight weeks and eight overall this season. This week’s ranking is CU’s highest in the coaches’ poll since coming in at No. 16 the week of March 15, 2004.
All five of Colorado’s losses have been to ranked teams, including two each to Stanford and California ranked No. 7 or better at the time. Stanford and California remained at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively, while UCLA held steady at No. 16. The Buffaloes do have one top 10 win on their resume, a 70-66 win over then-No. 8 Louisville on Dec. 14. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 14.
This week’s ranking marks the 159th time Colorado has appeared in the coaches’ poll dating back to the 1988-89 campaign.
Colorado moved up one spot to a season-best No. 19 in the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Top 25 poll released Monday. The ranking is CU’s highest in the AP Poll since coming in at No. 17 in the final poll of the 2003-04 season (March 15, 2004). This week marks the first time this season that CU’s coaches’ ranking has matched that of the AP poll.
Colorado will close Pac-12 regular season action with a trip to the Oregon schools this weekend. The Buffaloes play at Oregon on Friday, March 1, at 8 p.m. MT and finish up at Oregon State on Sunday, March 3, at 1 p.m. MT. CU, currently in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 with Washington, controls its own destiny for a coveted top four seed and first round bye in the 2013 Pac-12 Tournament, March 7-10, in Seattle.

First Conference Weekly Honor For Junior Forward
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – University of Colorado junior forward André Roberson has been named the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 10-16, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Roberson tallied his fifth double-double of the season in Colorado’s only game of the week, a 50-43 win at Fresno State. Roberson scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed a career-best 20 rebounds. He shot 7-of-12 from the field with an additional three assists and one steal on the night.
Roberson grabbed his first PAC 12 honors for a 20-rebound night.
The San Antonio, Texas, native is the first Buff to have 20 boards in one game in more than a decade. His total is the most by a Pac-12 player this season and the most for a Pac-12 player in four years. The first road win of the season moved the Buffs to an 8-2 record, matching its best start since the 2001-02 campaign.
This is Roberson’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor, and the third all-time selection for Colorado. He is the second CU player to be named conference player of the week this year.
Roberson is also looking to become the school’s first player since Shaun Vander (1989-91) to average a double-double in back-to-back seasons. Entering Friday’s home game against Northern Arizona (Dec. 21, 6:30 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Network), Roberson is averaging 12. 1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
The 20-rebound performance against the Bulldogs was the 17th 20-rebound performance in CU history and tied for the fourth-most in a game away from home. It’s also the first 20-rebound performance in a CU road game in almost 52 years, since Roger Voss had 27 at Missouri on Feb. 4, 1961, and most away from home since Jamahl Mosley had 20 versus Baylor in Kansas City on March 8, 2001.

Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF) announces Global Wildfire
Awareness Week, from May 1-7, 2011 in the Northern Hemisphere, with a
theme of “Your Home…Your Responsibility.
Wildfire affects residents, businesses and governments on every
continent and we are using our resources to link and assist those
groups,” said IAWF President Chuck Bushey. “This is a key time to
share wildfire prevention information with the world,” he added. The
IAWF’s full proclamation and a growing body of resources are available
on a new website – wildfireworld.org — orientated towards
homeowners, firefighters, communities and governmental organizations
throughout the world.
We are excited to globally link wildfire professional to share
information, research, and practical tools in the effort to reduce
wildfire impacts,” said Bushey. This dynamic site allows sharing of
community wildfire profiles, fire prevention materials and real-time,
global fire occurrence information. “The site will build as time
goes on and will become more vibrant with submissions from all parts
of the globe,” he continued. The Southern Hemisphere Awareness Week
kicks off October 1.
This initiative grows from IAWF’s mission to foster leadership and
communication for the wildland fire community. This bi-annual
campaign seeks to expand IAWF’s commitment to wildfire prevention
around the globe. As the Proclamation notes, “Our vision is a
global society that is not only vigilant but also knowledgeable on
how to live in fire-prone environments. We ask for your
participation, not only through this week, but throughout the
year.”
“Wildfires are a growing problem, globally and locally,” said
IAWF Board Member Ron Steffens. “The first year of Global Wildfire
Awareness Week we are building a clearinghouse of current, evolving
information.” The new site showcases community profiles such as
Greece, home to massive wildfires in 2010, and Washington state
(USA), with more profiles being added over the coming months. Fire
prevention and home safety evaluation resources are available along
with links to global wildfire news. Wildland firefighters are
encouraged to upload their “Community Profile” as we observe
globally how each local community prevents unplanned wildfires.
