Boulder police: Credit card rampage by recent wallet thieves

0

Boulder police are looking for three suspects (one male and two females) in connection with the theft of a wallet and credit cards from the Whole Foods store, located at 2905 Pearl St., on January 20, 2013.

The victim was grocery shopping around 3:30 p.m. and said she became distracted when a male bumped into her with his cart. She had placed her open purse in the seat of the cart while she was shopping and believes the male stole her wallet after he ran into her with his cart. She didn’t immediately notice that her wallet had been taken.

Her stolen credit cards were used a short time later at several stores, including Apple, Target, Gymboree, Sunglass Hut and Nordstrom Rack. Photos taken from surveillance video show two women using the cards to purchase a variety of merchandise and gift cards.

One female suspect is described as:

·         White or Hispanic

·         Between 26 and 30 years old

·         Average or slim build

·         Brown or auburn hair which is pulled back from her face

·         Between 30 and 35 years old

·         Slightly overweight

·         Wearing a dark-colored jacket and white scarf

·         Straight, dark hair which is pulled back from her face

·         Carrying a handbag with short straps

Clerks believe the women were speaking Spanish, and described them as wearing “high end” clothing and carrying Gucci and Louis Vuitton handbags. Photos of the women are attached.

The male suspect from Whole Foods is described as:

·         Hispanic male

·         Early-to-mid twenties

·         6’02” tall

·         Tall and stocky build (not heavyset)

·         Short black hair

·         Wearing a white stocking cap with blue stripes, and a black jacket

CU crime reporting goes online

0

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department is proud to announce the debut of a new online crime reporting option for the public.

The site will allow persons to report the crime and incident types listed below at the UCPD website: http://police.colorado.edu/crimereporting. The new site is not for reporting “crimes in progress” or other emergencies.

·         Bicycle theft (no dollar limit)

·         Computer/other theft (value under $2,500)

·         Criminal mischief, including graffiti

·         Lost/mislaid personal or university property

·         Non-criminal property damage or personal injury

·         Traffic- or pedestrian-related concern

Currently, an officer would respond to these incidents, interview witnesses and then compile a police report. While that remains an option, the online reporting site can save time for both the reporting party and UCPD officers. For example, UCPD took reports on 162 bike thefts last year.

“This new tool provides an online convenience for students and others who want to report crimes on campus,” said CU-Boulder Police Chief Joe Roy. “It will also free up officers to spend more time on the street focusing on directed problem solving, such as preventing bike thefts and more serious crimes.”

Users can upload their case summary, possible suspect info and incident photos. The information will transfer into UCPD’s records management system and be investigated in the same manner as reports filed by police officers.

CU police name a suspect in rash of wallet, laptop thefts

0

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department has identified a suspect wanted in connection with the theft of an iPad over the summer. This suspect is also wanted for questioning in a pattern of recent wallet thefts at three university campuses: CU-Boulder, CU Anschutz Medical Campus and the Colorado School of Mines.

CU-Boulder police worked with Lakewood police to obtain an arrest warrant for Raymond Webster Hamilton, 26, of Denver. He is not a CU student. He has active warrants out of Lakewood (providing false information to a pawn broker), Denver (possessing stolen property) and the Department of Corrections (parole violation).

Hamilton is 5-feet, 11-inches tall and weighs approximately 185 pounds. If you know of Hamilton’s whereabouts or see him on campus, contact CU Police dispatch at 303-492-6666.

The following is a chronology of recent thefts at the three universities:

  • Hamilton pawned an iPad just hours after it was stolen from a CU-Boulder Visual Arts Complex office on July 25, 2012.
  • As a result of that case, Hamilton has an active arrest warrant for pawning stolen property (a Class 6 felony) to a Lakewood pawn broker.
  • On Oct. 17, 2012, someone stole five wallets and a laptop from CU-Boulder academic building offices and the University Memorial Center.
  • On Oct. 19, 2012, someone stole three wallets from offices at the Colorado School of Mines. A CSM Police Department investigation determined that Hamilton is a person of interest in at least one of those cases.
  • On Oct. 24, 2012, someone stole wallets and purses from 14 offices at CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Surveillance video of the suspect resembles Hamilton.

From Oct. 2 to Oct. 20, 2012, CU-Boulder police recorded 15 cases of a suspect or suspects stealing laptops and wallets from common areas or unlocked offices. For a Google Map with dates, locations and stolen items, see http://bit.ly/Oct2012CUthefts.

“Students and employees should not allow their valuable items to go unattended,” said CU-Boulder Police Chief Joe Roy. “Doing so provides thieves a crime of opportunity.”

CU-Boulder police recently solved an unrelated theft case from late September. The CU and Arvada police departments identified an individual who stole wallets from hockey locker rooms at the CU Recreation Center and Apex Center in Arvada. CU-Boulder student Christopher David Gudmundson was arrested on suspicion of three counts of felony burglary and 12 counts of theft. He is not suspected in the CU academic building thefts.

The CU-Boulder Police Department reminds the campus community to keep lockers and offices secured when unattended. In common areas, such as dining facilities, libraries or the University Memorial Center, never leave laptops, mobile phones or other valuable items unattended – even if just stepping away for a few minutes.  For more crime prevention tips, see http://police.colorado.edu/crime-prevention-and-safety.

Those who have information on these crimes but wish to remain anonymous may contact the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted via the Crime Stoppers website at http://www.crimeshurt.com. Those submitting tips through Crime Stoppers that lead to the arrest and filing of charges on a suspect(s) may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 from Crime Stoppers.

Boulder police: 53 cars stolen in last six months

Boulder police warn public of increase in auto thefts, offer advice to deter thieves

Vehicle thefts are on the rise in Boulder, and police want to warn the public and share some tips to make sure that others don’t become victims of auto theft.

Between Jan. 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012, people reported 53 stolen vehicles in Boulder. So far this year, 43 of those autos have been recovered (81% recovery rate). During the same time period last year (Jan. 1 – July 1, 2011), there were 46 vehicles reported stolen, with 35 of them recovered (76% recovery rate).

While the recovery rates might seem like good news, many of the recovered vehicles were severely damaged by the thieves and some of the vehicles were not drivable. In several instances, drug paraphernalia was found inside the recovered cars. Some of the autos were found in Boulder, and others were located in nearby cities.

Most of these vehicle thefts have several things in common:

  1. The victim’s left their cars unlocked or the windows down.
  2. They left spare keys inside the unlocked car.
  3. There were valuables, such as purses, credit cards and electronics, in full view.

Thieves are usually looking for an easy steal. They want to work fast to start the car and then leave the area. Many of these thefts would not have occurred if the victims had simply locked their vehicles. Police offer some advice to keep your car secure:

  • Always lock your car, even if it’s in your own driveway.
  • Never leave a spare key in your car (that includes the valet key in your glove box).
  • Don’t leave valuables (purses, wallets, cash, credit cards, and electronics) in view. It’s best to take them with you and not leave them in the car at all.
  • Don’t leave your car running unattended, even to make a quick trip into a convenience store. This is exactly how at least one thief made off with a car this year in Boulder.
  • Don’t leave your windows open – even cracked – when you park your vehicle.
  • Park in well-lit areas. If you have a garage, use it. (And don’t leave the garage door open. Thieves may not get your car, but they’ll take whatever else they can easily steal).
  • Consider an alarm, or a theft-deterrent/recovery system device like LoJack.

To date in 2012, Boulder police have made 13 arrests for auto theft. (One of the suspects is a teenager who is not old enough to obtain a driver’s license). From Jan. 1, 2011 to July 1, 2011, seven people were arrested. Police are continuing to investigate open cases.

If you are the victim of a vehicle theft, call police immediately. You may call 9-1-1, or the non-emergency Dispatch number at 303-441-3333. Police will need the make, model, year and color of your car, as well as the license plate number. They’ll also need to know when you believe car was stolen, and whether it was locked or unlocked at the time. Investigators will also ask whether you keep a spare key inside the vehicle.

Burglars make off with 50 grand worth of used electronics

0

Three suspects wanted in connection with $50,000 business burglary

Three unknown suspects burglarized two side-by-side businesses over the weekend, leaving behind damaged walls and windows and making off with an estimated $50,000.00 in electronics. Stolen electronics include dozens of cell phones and wireless accessories, a flat-screen TV, computers, two iPads, cash, video games and video game consoles and accessories.

The burglaries took place on Saturday, June 16, around 1:45 a.m. at LA Nails (2708 28th St.) and Next 2 New Wireless (2710 28th St). A surveillance camera from a nearby business shows three suspects in the Next 2 New Wireless store. Police are looking for any information which could assist in identifying the suspects.

The case number is 12-8033.

Investigators believe the suspects initially entered the LA Nails salon through a rear bathroom window, and then knocked a hole into the wall which adjoins the salon to the Next 2 New Wireless store. The hole was big enough to allow a person to pass through it. It does not appear that any merchandise or money was taken from the LA Nails salon.

The owner of the wireless store estimates damage and theft to total at least $50,000.00.

Police are asking for help from the public, and encourage anyone with information to contact Det. Kristin Weisbach. Her direct number is 303-441-4474. Those who have information but wish to remain anonymous may contact the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. More credit card thefts

Suspects spend thousands after stealing wallet

Police in Boulder are looking for one male and two female suspects who investigators believe are involved in a wallet theft that took place in Whole Foods Market, located at 2905 Pearl St., on Feb. 9.

A female victim was shopping in the store at 10:30 a.m. and left her purse unattended in her cart while she shopped. She realized her wallet was missing from her purse when she tried to check out and pay for her items around 11:25 a.m.

The victim began calling her credit card companies to cancel her cards, but they had already been used for transactions at various stores in Boulder. Thousands of dollars worth of mostly computer items and gift cards were charged to the credit cards before the victim could cancel them.

Here are descriptions of the suspects:

Female #1:

  • Hispanic
  • 5’5” to 5’6” tall
  • 130 pounds
  • Long black, waist-level hair
  • Dark brown eyes
  • Wearing black clothes and high-heeled black boots
  • Described by clerk as “stylish”

Female #2:

  • Hispanic
  • Approximately 40 years old
  • 5’3” to 5’4” tall
  • 140 pounds
  • Black hair
  • Light brown eyes
  • Wearing a tan beanie-style cap, a tan puffy jacket & blue jeans

Male:

  • Hispanic
  • Wearing a brown and black leather jacket
  • No further information is available, but photo is attached

The case number is 12-1836.

The Boulder Police Department would like to offer some tips for safe shopping:

  1. Keep your purse in your hands or on your shoulder; never leave it unattended because criminals know your attention will be divided while shopping.
  2. Keep your cell phone in your pocket.
  3. Pre-program phone numbers for your banks and all your credit card companies into your phone.
  4. Alert store security AND call law enforcement immediately if you discover you have been a victim of a theft.
  5. Call each financial institution immediately after becoming aware of the theft. Criminals know they have a small window of opportunity to use your credit cards before they are flagged as stolen.
  6. Authorize financial institutions to relase any illegal transaction details to law enforcement for the investigation.
  7. Don’t keep your Social Security card or any password information in your wallet.

Police are asking the public for help in identifying the suspect in the attached photo. The lead investigator in this case is Detective Scott Morris, and he can be reached at 303-441-3482. Those who have information but wish to remain anonymous may contact the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website atwww.crimeshurt.com. Boulder police release photo of possible suspect in catalytic converter thefts

Boulder police are investigating a string of catalytic converter thefts that have taken place over the past few weeks and are releasing a photo of a potential suspect.

So far, the department has received reports of 16 thefts since Jan. 4. The thefts are occurring during the overnight hours in the area bordered by Colorado Avenue to the north, Table Mesa to the south, Broadway to the west and Manhattan Drive to the east.

The thief or thieves have been targeting SUVs and pick-up trucks, such as Toyota Tacomas, 4-Runners and Nissan Pathfinders, as well as one Honda Element. The suspect or suspects use saws to remove the catalytic converters, and can do so in many cases in less than one minute. The catalytic converters can be sold to scrap metal dealers, who extract precious metals (like platinum) from them.
