Nicasio vs Maholm
Apr 26th
Dogers Paul Maholm and Rockies Juan Nicasio bring contrasting histories into their meeting at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night in the second of three games between the National League West rivals.
Maholm (0-2, 5.60 ERA) has had little success against the Rockies in his career. He is 1-8 with a 6.63 ERA in 10 career starts against them.
At least his last start was a while ago. He was with the Pirates on April 30, 2011, when he gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out three, walked three and threw 101 pitches in seven innings of a 4-1 loss at Coors Field.
Nicasio (2-0, 4.30 ERA) threw three times against the Dodgers last season — all at Dodger Stadium and all Rockies victories. As for Nicasio, he was 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA.
Nicasio’s active 13 1/3-inning scoreless streak at Dodger Stadium is the fourth-longest such run at the stadium, behind the Mets’ Kyle Farnsworth (15 2/3 innings), the Phillies’ Cliff Lee (14) and the Blue Jays’ R.A. Dickey (13 2/3).
Last year was his first taste of success against the Dodgers. He is 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA in eight starts against them.
Rockies: CarGo has hit before …
Since hitting .375 during a 10-game hit streak to start the season, Carlos Gonzalez is 6-for-45 (.133) over his last 12 games — including Friday night’s 0-for-5.
After a flareup of left knee tendinitis on Sunday, Gonzalez played Monday and Tuesday, then rested Wednesday and the team’s day off on Thursday. Earlier in the slump, there was an inordinate number of hard-hit balls. Friday, there were four soft grounders to the right side of the infield and a fly ball to right.
Manager Walt Weiss figures Gonzlaez has hit before, and he’ll do so again.

80 pitches thrown by Chacin
Apr 25th
On Thursday night, Jhoulys Chacin took another step toward rejoining the Colorado Rockies.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound righty threw 80 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in a rehab start for the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox against the Iowa Cubs, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out four and walking one. Chacin, who began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained throwing shoulder, threw 52 strikes and hit 91 mph on the radar gun with his fastball.
The 26-year-old said his shoulder felt strong, and he was happy with the location of his offspeed pitches.
Chacin spent most of his start focusing on locating his array of pitches.
Chacin said his shoulder strain likely occurred because he was not delivering the ball “the right way” or with the correct arm angle while ramping up his offseason throwing regimen heading into the season. He could rejoin the Rockies as early as next week, and he said he would be ready if called upon even though he has pitched just 12 innings in his three rehab starts this month.
Chacin needed just 22 pitches to retire the first six batters he faced, but ran into trouble in the third. After giving up a hit to Logan Watkins, Chacin walked Eli Whiteside after a nine-pitch at-bat and gave up his first run when Chris Coghlan doubled Watkins home from second.
He followed a 26-pitch third inning by throwing 21 in the fourth, when he surrendered two unearned runs after giving up a double to Whiteside. Chacin got the first two outs of the fifth before being lifted for Pedro Hernandez with a runner on second base and the Sky Sox trailing, 3-0.
