Boulder County Sheriff at odds with Boulder law enforcement  Some high up Boulder Police  and Sheriffs officials are not

pleased with Boulder county Joe Pelle’s backing the NRA’s stance on guns and opposition to Colorado’s new gun laws. “I am really disappointed in him said one police official. ” The NRA are a  dangerous group and the prisons are loaded with their kind” …I can’t imagine how Joe is backing them.”

Another hi level Sheriff told me ” You have to know that people who are not all there are attracted to the NRA and extreme gun politics”  ” The NRA has been taken over by the radical element ” the Sheriff said.  A third Police official and a college instructor in law enforcement told me ” The NRA has changed and so has it’s membership. It used to be that there were a few extremists  but since Charlton Heston made that ‘from my cold dead hands comment’ the whole organisation has shifted.

My run in with NRA members last month has led to open police cases by Boulder PD, Sante Fe PD and Gainsville Ga pd as well as ATF and FBI investigations on some pretty crazy NRA members who use social media and the internet to attack people. Sufficed to say that law enforcement nationwide are keeping close tabs on these people. They are currently known as ” conservative christian constitutionalist, tea party, patriots, Republicans”. They used to be know as Militia in the 90s.

The IRS investigates Tea Party and Patriots I am glad they scrutinized this group before handing out non profit status. These people are domestic terrorists. They keep the ATF, FBI, Secret service , and US Marshals plenty busy protecting our president from them.

Startup Boulder Week 2013 fueled by alcohol How the city and Downtown Boulder ever got involved in promoting this drunken convention is beyond me.  There is so much drinking going on at this years Start up Boulder , it needs to studied by the city and police.  Just yesterday there were over 30 companies in Downtown Boulder handing out free booze all day to anyone who walked in the front door. It was called the Start Up crawl . On the Pearls street mall, Downtown Boulder has a booze tent set up for the entire week. Many of the events are held in bars . There are drinking parties every night. There are drinking breakfasts. What the fuck is going on.? This is supposed to be about Boulder being a business startup community and it has turned into a week long drunk. All that is missing is a Golf tournament.

from the Drinking Capital of America, where there are more alcoholics with engineering degrees than anywhere on earth, where we breed alcoholics, where the city does not give a rats ass, where the health effects are dire

Four Mile Fire in Boulder could have ended up like the North Fork fire : loss of life

2

If it weren’t for the early actions by the Boulder County sheriff the Four Mile Fire surely would have ended in loss of life. That seems lost on this community still to this day.  Just how dangerous that fire was needs to be examined.

I have had some experience covering Forrest fires. They now call them wild land fire, but I prefer forest fires when they are in the trees.  In the 80′s I covered the Black Tiger Fire which destroyed over 40 beautiful homes up on sugar loaf.  I covered the Yellow Stone park fire and most shockingly the Storm King Fire near Aspen where 13 smoke jumpers lost their lives. So I knew just how rapidly a fast moving forest fire could kill people.

When the ferociousness flames of the Four Mile Fire hit on Sunday morning Labor Day weekend 2010, I new we were in big trouble.  I was up on flagstaff Mountain when it started, talking with a city of boulder Parks open space officer. I could hear all the radio traffic coming in to his truck radio.  He had about 7 channels going. The most frightening ones were all of the fire crew channels.

It was bad. People were running for their lives. Fire crews were running for their lives. And the fire was running right up the mountain buring everything in its path. The fire had started at about 10:30am, but by noon I knew we had lost over 100 homes and the winds were still blowing. I got out my laptop and started to write.

The fire had crested Sunshine Canyon road and was on the move down the other side.  As a reporter I started reporting what I heard and saw from Flagstaff.  Boulder OEM hadn’t opened yet, and I could not get any assistance or information officially on the fire.  I decided, to hell with it and not wait. First why wait? Secondly this fire was a potential killer.

I sat in the Boulder Channel 1 TV production truck and then  did our first video from Flagstaff with the fire as a back drop at 11:30.  Donna Marek, one of our reporters wrote the first story at 11:10. She was talking with fire crews from Downtown Boulder. Ron Baird our news editor called me on my cell and had the first report from the city at 11:40 . He filed the second story.

Ron Donna and I talked about how serious this was. It was decided that I should post the life threatening stories based on what I heard on the radio and let resident know this was a fire storm and get the hell off the mountain.  Before I did, I talked with Patrick Vonkeyserling, the city PIO. He told me he couldn’t confirm anything, but it was really really bad and that if i could use social Media: ie Twitter and our on line news paper, it would help get the word out to people up on sunshine.

With that I started posting stories and updates:  ”People are running for their lives” “We are going to burn to death” “3 feared missing dead” “possible corpses found near burned out Car”  Over 30 updates in the first 3 hours.

The idea was to shock people into leaving their homes and not wait.  People from Sunshine and the surrounding area started to tweet and call me. “should we leave?” were the questions. “Yes I replied , get out now”. People on twitter said don’t listen to us, that we were fear mongering. To witch I replied get out now or burn to death in your homes.  Ron Baird called me and said.
“fuck the people on twitter  just keep reporting what is going on.”

In the aftermath of Four Mile Fire , the Four Mile fire chief thanked me for our aggressive coverage early on. You helped us evacuate people he told me one day over coffee at Great Harvest Bread.

But I had taken a lot of flack from the Twitter community following the fire. At the time I was really upset by their reaction, but now I realize they were just upset viewers and readers who had no idea or access to what was really happening up in Fourmile.  I did. I had a direct line to dispatch, OEM, Sheriffs, the Forrest service and I was sitting in a city open space truck taking it all in from a vantage point. I never should have paid any attention to twitter.

During the days of the fire, Boulder chief, Larry Donner told me that the fire was moving up to 40 miles per hour early on and was spreading embers the size of house shingles 1 mile in front of the flames. He said most people go into denial and under react and that’s when they get killed.  He also told me it was good that I scared the hell out of everybody and made them move during  the early stages.

He said, as did the Sunshine chief , the people on twitter were wrong to criticize you. “You did the right thing even though there were no deaths. “You scared people into action and that is what’s needed in a fast moving wild land fire.  But criticism comes with the territory.” he said.

The sheriff was criticized for cutting the power all over the mountain area. He wanted people uncomfortable and he wanted them to get out!  The truth is it is a damn wonder people didn’t lose their lives in that fire. Yep, we caused fear and shock in our reporting. We intended to.  Hopefully, we helped save some lives.  The alternaticve to agressive evacuations is what happened at the North Fork Fire. In hind sight we’d report it the same all over again.

I had apologized to the twitter people for a week. But it did no good. They had their minds made up. We did our jobs at Boulder channel 1. Thanks from the fire departments was icing on the cake.

Interesting Ron Baird who is a seasoned editor and Donna Marek a seasoned reporter, kept telling me. “Don’t listen to Twitter, they don’t know what you know. Just keep telling the story as it unfolds.”

Downtown Boulder, BMOCA, Twitter PR women, Hill Biz association Irresponsibly promote alcohol events

Drunk women leaving BMOCA event

Boulder Colorado is huge drinking community.  It tops every drinking and party list that comes out. Boulder also has a high level of alcohol related diseases especially alcoholism, mental illness and domestic violence

Last week a media campaign begun by the PR women at Downtown Boulder, on Twitter and at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art are pushing an alcohol driven event called “Best Mixologist”

“ The 2nd annual contest stirs up talent throughout Downtown Boulder as select mixologists compete for the audience vote on the best cocktail!Savor, critique, and vote for the most inventive cocktails prepared by an elite group of downtown Boulder’s drink masters. Attendee votes decide the winner who along with bragging rights – will possess the KidRobot custom designed trophy until the 2013 competition. Tickets: $45/advance | $50/door Ticket Price Includes: Access to the event, a commemorative shot glass, samples of every mixologists drink…….“ http://c1n.tv/boulderchannel1/category/news/scene/

This is essentially a huge drinking event with absolutely no merit.  It promotes alcoholism, alcohol abuse, irresponsible drinking, drunk driving everything Boulder has been fighting for decades. They are promoting addictive behavior. It’s a wonder they don’t have a vodka inflatable outside BMOCA. The city discourages alcohol banners and inflatables promoting alcohol.

BMOCA is supposed to be an art museum, but it is notorious for having drunken parties and this on Best Mixologist is the worst .

Up on the Hill a local Toco shop is trying to turn itself into a late night drinking hole. City councilman Macon Cowles has been trying to get the cops to show stats which relates drinking to crime on the hill.   That is a given, but the city is casting a harsh eye on any more drinking establishments on the hill. We shall see. I don’t have much faith.

Boulder has two more super liquor stores opening this year. So the city is hypocritical when it comes to addressing alcoholism.

I think Downtown boulders behavior is outrageous and in extreme poor tastes by promoting young women to become alcoholics. Downtown boulder turned Band on the Bricks into a drunk fest of beer and made it less of a family event. They don’t come anymore.

BMOCA should be ashamed of themselves too. What kind of fucking art museum is this?? Holding a Coyote Ugly event?? That belongs in a bar. Why didn’t BMOCA promote a Best Barista event instead?

What is the most troubling is that Best Mixologist is the brain child of young Boulder PR women at Downtown Boulder and on Twitter. These are the wine and martini girls who ( all they talk about is drinking ) who are pushing more drinking in our community.  Shame on them.

Global Business Networking: Accessing High Tech Talent Jann Scott’Journal

0

I went to a rare event the other night at the Boulder Chamber. It used to be called Boulder Chamber of Commerce but they wanted to distance themselves from the national, “The chamber of Commerce”.  The anti capitalist, anti business sentiment among the left here  in Boulder are to blame. Thank God the didn’t change it to the Boulder Chamber of Communists.

The conference I attend was on immigration. (Boulder Chamber event, Global Business Networking: Accessing High Tech Talent Live at 5:30 tonight, Nov 10, 2011) Specifically why the American government make  it is so hard to hire foreign engineers for technology firms. The USA has a shortage of high quality engineers. Tech firms have to look elsewhere to find them but the government won’t allow American companies to hire foreign engineers. Some Boulder companies survival depend upon it. Some have gone broke.

In a nutshell when you have a highly competent foreign engineer working for a tech firm, you can build a division around him and thereby hire a whole slew of less competent American engineers to do the production. So it is a job creator. The problem is that the Bush administration screwed us and congress is too stupid to figure out that we have fallen behind.. They think every immigrant wanting to work here is either a Saudi terrorist or an unskilled illiterate.

To make matters worse we’ll give out education visas like candy but once we graduate a Korean engineer, we won’t let him back in the country to work for us, so he goes to China and works for them helping to build their economy. How dumb is that?

Anyway we televised this conference and you will be able to see it on my 22BOOM Show next week. If you want to see a crappy video stream version of it you can see that on Justin TV Boulder Channel One .

Now, I like going to business events but the business community is divided here in Boulder. The Boulder Chamber is big and old school. But they are very inviting and open too. They will let any community member play. They are the most  equal community oriented business group.  Downtown Boulder is more selective, elitist and discriminating. They hurt themselves and local business’s continually….. I have beaten them up pretty hard here too for it.  They whole Boulder Start Up community headed by Start-Up Boulder and their ilk is by far the most elitist, censoring, divisive, discriminating business group in Boulder.  Of course they don’t think so. Most of them are 21 to 32 and they think they invented business and everyone else is stupid.

“This is both a problem and part of Boulders nature” a Chamber Economic Vitality staffer told me.  ”It is also what makes Boulder a successful business community”. Maybe so, but I hate snot nosed elitist kid know it alls and they make terrible employees.

I did have fun at this event though. It had a mix of old farts ( my people and young punks..them)

Jared Polis was there to speak about how stupid the American congress is. Jason Mendelson was there to help Jared uphold the the “super rich” end. Actually I dunno how much money he has. It’s millions and millions. Jared of course is a billionaire.

I put the tap on them both to help me sell channel One Networks to Google or Face book.  A 30 second pitch was too long. I needed a ten second one for Jared.  He was like, What can I do? I dunno anybody.” Mendelson was a little more targeted… “Why should I”? he asked. Good Question.  Because Jason,  C1N is designed to have ad, print, TV offices in every city and is  self sustaining. It is a multi billion dollar company and you can make millions right now off of it. It works.

But they ran away from me.  I’ll keep you posted on my pitches. But this is the year.. actually 2012 is the year we have large capitalization and plan to plan to open a 2500 person facility in Boulder.
