EPA honcha and Colo. senator discuss president’s climate plan

Sen. Mark Udall to speak at CU Law School on
President Obama’s Climate Action Plan
Recently appointed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy and Colorado Sen. Mark Udall will discuss President Obama’s Climate Action Plan at the University of Colorado Law School on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The event also will include a panel discussion with former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, Colorado Oil and Gas Association President Tisha Schuller and Brad Udall, director of the law school’s Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment.
The event will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Wolf Law Building’s Wittemyer Courtroom on the CU-Boulder campus. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited in the courtroom; additional seats will be available in classrooms with a live video feed.
The event is co-sponsored by the Getches-Wilkinson Center and the EPA. The Getches-Wilkinson Center also will host its annual Clyde Martz Summer Water Conference on Aug. 15-16. For more information on the water conference visithttp://www.colorado.edu/law/research/gwc.

CU-Boulder Experts on Middle East; Feb. 16 Faculty Panel Discussion on Egypt

–Nabil Echchaibi, assistant professor of journalism and media studies, can address religious aspects of the events in Egypt as well as correlations with Iran. Echchaibi is the associate director of the Center for Media, Religion and Culture and his research has included identity, religion and the role of media in shaping and reflecting modern religious perspectives among Muslims in the Middle East. –Najeeb Jan, instructor of geography, can address issues relating to the broad relationship between the United States and democracy in the Muslim world. Jan, who is part Pakistani, spent several years attending school in that country and has relatives and friends living there. He currently is researching “political Islam” in Pakistan and has interviewed clerics, students and members of the military for a book he is writing called “The Meta-colonial State: Pakistan and the Crisis of Power.” Jan can be reached by calling 303-492-2860 or by e-mail at najeeb.jan@colorado.edu.
–John M. Willis, assistant professor of history, can address the history and politics of the modern Middle East, including topics such as imperialism, modern Islamic thought and nationalist movements. On Wednesday, Feb. 16, all four CU-Boulder professors listed above will participate in a panel discussion titled “The Revolution in Egypt: Causes and Consequences” at 7 p.m. in Eaton Humanities Building room 1B50. The forum is sponsored by the CU Faculty Federation; the CU Peace and Conflict Studies Program; the Center for the Study of Conflict, Collaboration and Creative Governance; the Political Economy Group of the sociology department; and the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. County to host farm and ranch panel discussion on Jan. 19

When: Wednesday, Jan. 19, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Monarch High School, 329 Campus Drive, Louisville.
Farmers will discuss their experiences and challenges as well as how they farm in Boulder County. The panel includes Famuer Rasmussen, Jr., Jules Van Thuyne, Jr., Dwayne Cushman, Dave Asbury, Anne Cure and Mark Guttridge, all of whom are farmers and ranchers currently working in the county.
The event will consist of a facilitator-led discussion among the farmers and ranchers followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. Questions will be drawn from those submitted by the audience.
In November, Parks and Open Space held a forum on sustainable agriculture that focused on policy. The farm and ranch panel discussion will offer a chance to focus on practice.
