Gonzalez Left Finger Contusion
May 2nd
Before hit his sixth home run of the season, a foul ball dealt him what was later diagnosed as a left index finger contusion.
Gonzalez was replaced with pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes in the fourth inning of the Rockies’ eventual 7-4 victory over the Mets, but neither he nor the Rockies believe the injury to be serious. The finger was still swollen by game’s end, but it had already improved.
Gonzalez suffered a ligament strain of his right middle finger last July, and it severely curtailed his playing time and effectiveness. Thursday’s injury, he said, was nothing like that.
The Rockies announced that his availability would be assessed day to day, but manager Walt Weiss doesn’t think the outfielder will be out of the lineup for long.
The home run, off Mets starter Bartolo Colon with two out in the first inning, was Gonzalez’s second in the last two games — after he had gone homerless since April 11. But the finger was already becoming a problem.
Gonzalez has been trying to climb out of a slump. He left the game with a .245 batting average.

Nicasio vs Maholm
Apr 26th
Dogers Paul Maholm and Rockies Juan Nicasio bring contrasting histories into their meeting at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night in the second of three games between the National League West rivals.
Maholm (0-2, 5.60 ERA) has had little success against the Rockies in his career. He is 1-8 with a 6.63 ERA in 10 career starts against them.
At least his last start was a while ago. He was with the Pirates on April 30, 2011, when he gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out three, walked three and threw 101 pitches in seven innings of a 4-1 loss at Coors Field.
Nicasio (2-0, 4.30 ERA) threw three times against the Dodgers last season — all at Dodger Stadium and all Rockies victories. As for Nicasio, he was 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA.
Nicasio’s active 13 1/3-inning scoreless streak at Dodger Stadium is the fourth-longest such run at the stadium, behind the Mets’ Kyle Farnsworth (15 2/3 innings), the Phillies’ Cliff Lee (14) and the Blue Jays’ R.A. Dickey (13 2/3).
Last year was his first taste of success against the Dodgers. He is 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA in eight starts against them.
Rockies: CarGo has hit before …
Since hitting .375 during a 10-game hit streak to start the season, Carlos Gonzalez is 6-for-45 (.133) over his last 12 games — including Friday night’s 0-for-5.
After a flareup of left knee tendinitis on Sunday, Gonzalez played Monday and Tuesday, then rested Wednesday and the team’s day off on Thursday. Earlier in the slump, there was an inordinate number of hard-hit balls. Friday, there were four soft grounders to the right side of the infield and a fly ball to right.
Manager Walt Weiss figures Gonzlaez has hit before, and he’ll do so again.

Denver – Rockies Loose 10-9
Apr 21st
A relentless lineup from Philadelphia was due and determined to turn the tables, ultimately battling to a 10-9 victory to put the skids on the Rockies’ three-game winning streak and bring Colorado back to .500.
Morneau knocked in five runs on Sunday, including at least one in each of his first four trips to the plate. He drove in the tying run three times: in the first, third, and — with a two-run home run off southpaw Jake Diekman — the seventh.
“Mo’s pretty locked in right now,” manager Walt Weiss said. “That was a big homer off a really tough lefty in Diekman. A huge home run for us. Unfortunately we came up short, but we battled back a couple times. Both teams battled all day. It’s a tough game, but the guys fought hard.”
Morneau’s prowess didn’t keep the Phillies from pitching around Troy Tulowitzki in the eighth to face the first baseman again with the game on the line — the tying run on second — and left-hander Antonio Bastardo on the mound.
“That was Bastardo’s all the way,” manager Ryne Sandberg said of the decision. “Tulo, Morneau, pick your poison. But Tulo — one swing and he’s the tying run, even as the hitter. It worked out. But this is a special place where you have to do things a little different.”
Colorado pitching had been dominant through the first two games of the series, allowing neither an earned run nor even an extra-base hit Friday or Saturday. But Philadelphia put the kibosh on that stat right away Sunday as Jimmy Rollins went yard in the game’s first frame, sending a Juan Nicasio offering into the seats above the right field scoreboard for a solo homer and an early lead.
