Fire ban in effect for city
Mar 23rd
Sheriff Joe Pelle enacted a ban on open burning and the discharge of fireworks in unincorporated Boulder County because of hazardous fire conditions in the area. The ban remains in effect until further notice.
The City of Boulder already has an ordinance in place that prohibits any open burning within the city limits or on city property outside city limits. However, with the county fire ban, the use of charcoal-type grills in areas other than private residences and the use of any device or item that could cause an open flame or heat source for a fire are also prohibited. This includes model rockets that use an ignitable-type fuel for operation.
Open burning is defined in local ordinance as bonfires, campfires or the burning of any trash, paper, rubbish, wood, weeds, brush, plants or other combustible or flammable material. Outdoor portable-type fireplaces such as chimineas or outdoor fire pits are illegal to operate within the city limits. Penalties can include criminal charges, fines, court costs, restitution, jail and insurance consequences.
City code prohibits use of fireworks, of any kind, anywhere in the city and prohibits possession of fireworks in any park, parkway, recreation area or open space. Amnesty will be granted to anyone wanting to discard unused fireworks brought to any Boulder fire station. To report fireworks violations, residents should call the non-emergency dispatch line at 303-441-3333. To report a fire, always call 9-1-1 and provide dispatchers with a location.
Sheriff Pelle orders outdoor fire ban for Boulder County
Mar 23rd
Boulder County, Colo. – Sheriff Joe Pelle has enacted a ban on open burning and the discharge of fireworks in unincorporated Boulder County. This specifically includes all areas east of the Peak-to-Peak Highway (State Highway 72).
The ban will remain in effect until the hazardous fire conditions subside. Advisory signs will be posted on roadways throughout the county by the end of this week.
The fire ban allows for liquid or gas fuel stoves and fireplaces in buildings. It bans all other open fires and the use of any kind of fireworks.
“Although the high winds will die down the forecast does not call for significant moisture, and continued breezy warm conditions will keep fire danger high,” Pelle said. “Firefighting resources are stretched thin and we need to do everything we can to prevent additional fires.”
Anyone found in violation of the fire ban may be convicted of a class 2 petty offense and may be subject to a $500 fine. Higher fines may be imposed for subsequent offenses.

Boulder Fire Department responds to overnight fire at Arapahoe Avenue duplex
Mar 14th
Twenty-five firefighters from the Boulder Fire Department have been fighting a fire at a duplex at 408 and 410 Arapahoe Avenue. Multiple 911 calls came in to the communication center around 3:12 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, the duplex at 410 Arapahoe was fully involved.
Five adults were inside. Two have been transported to Boulder Community Hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation injuries. Another is being flown to University Hospital to be treated for severe burns.
At this time, the fire is out. Firefighters are pulling down ceilings and knocking down walls to make sure there are no hot spots inside and that no smaller fires are continuing to burn in unseen areas.
Investigators are on-scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, and it’s too early to estimate damages to the building.
