The University of Colorado men’s golf team managed to finish its first two rounds here Friday and landed in 10th place at the midway point of the 55th annual Pac-12 Championships, though second round play was suspended for nine schools due to impending darkness and slow play that saw each round take nearly six hours to complete.
No. 3 Stanford had two golfers needing to complete three holes between them, but the Cardinal stood at 2-under par as a team with only those remaining to finish up 36 holes as a team; No. 4 California was one of just three teams to complete both rounds and is four back, as the Bears finished with a 2-over 722 team score. Those two have broken from the pack at this point, as No. 10 Washington is a distant third, 15-over par, but the Huskies have 24 holes left to top off the second round.
The No. 52 Buffaloes also were fortunate enough to finish both rounds, though are in 10th place, some 16 shots out of ninth place at this point, with a 41-over par 761; Oregon holds ninth but does have 24 holes remaining, so the gap could close: the Ducks are finishing up on the same final holes the Buffs did, and CU struggled down the stretch in the second round, playing those six holes a combined 19-over par, 15-over by the five players who wound up contributing to the team score.
Stanford led Arizona after the first round, as the Cardinal put an opening 2-over 362 team score into the books to lead the host Wildcats by four shots. Colorado was tied for eighth with Arizona State at 19-over 379.
Colorado played the first round at a disadvantage after sophomore Philip Juel-Berg withdrew after nine holes in first round with some flu-like symptoms; he was obviously not his normal self, opening with a double bogey and was around 7-over when he pulled out. But he toughed it out and returned to play in the afternoon, and turned in a 4-over 76; he was actually 1-under through 15 but finished with a bogey and two doubles.

Avs Addition of Hishon

It’s not a surprise that Joey Hishon will skate for Avalanche tonight in St. Paul.
A quick thumbnail sketch of the 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward paints a picture of a player who more than belongs on the Stanley Cup Playoffs stage, in Game 4 of the Avs’ Western Conference first-round matchup with the Wild (7:30 p.m. MT, Altitude, CNBC).
Hishon was the Avalanche’s first selection (17th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft—taken a year after the club hit draft gold in Matt Duchene (1st, third), Ryan O’Reilly (2nd, 33rd) and Tyson Barrie (3rd, 64th)— after Hishon was voted the OHL’s “Best Stickhandler” and “Best Playmaker” in the 2008-09 season.
He wore Canada’s iconic maple leaf sweater during the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, too, and led the team in scoring with five goals and five assists in six games.
Some foot and knee injuries hampered his draft stock during the 2009 season, and some considered it a head scratcher when the Avalanche plucked him so early during the 2010 draft in Los Angeles.
Hishon made the pick look warranted, though, with 87 points in 50 games in the 2010-11 Ontario Hockey League regular season, helping his Owen Sound Attack into the 2011 Memorial Cup.
For some perspective, Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado’s current first-round pick, had 78 points last season in his final run through Canadian junior hockey, and everyone knows how that has played out.
It seemed in Hishon the Avs had added to their youthful future with back-to-back OHL home runs.

Boulder Football Hosting Marrow Donor Drive

University of Colorado Football team, along with Be The Match and the Bonfils Colorado Marrow Donor Program, will host a Marrow Donor Registry Drive on Friday, April 25, at Balch Fieldhouse from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The drive will encourage participants to sign up for the Be The Match Registry, which is used to match potential donors to those whose only or best hope for survival is a marrow transplant.
“I got involved with the Marrow Donor Registry at San Jose State, and we did this last year,” CU Head Coach Mike MacIntyre said. “About 12,000 people a year look on the registry and only about 5,000 find matches, and this is a last resort. You could save a life.”
Once a person is registered, they have the opportunity to save a life until the age of 61. Healthy young adults are especially needed for the registry and patients are most likely a match of someone of their own racial and ethnic heritage, meaning often times a person’s unique ancestry may make them the only person who can save another’s life.
“It’s an honorable and life-changing thing to do, so I’m excited our guys will be a part of it,” MacIntyre said. “We’ve had kids that have matched before, it’s really a neat deal and worthwhile for our players and the entire community to look into it.”
There are two ways to donate marrow, either from a peripheral blood stem cell donation or a marrow donation. The PBCS donation is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure after which a donor would be back to their regular life in one to two days. The marrow donation is a surgical procedure that is usually an outpatient procedure after which the donor would be back to their regular life in two to seven days.
CU’s Balch Fieldhouse is located on the west side of Folsom Field on the CU-Boulder main campus. There are parking meters and a metered parking lot located on Colorado Avenue west of Folsom Avenue.
