Kyleesha Weston Leaves Basketball Team, Intends to Transfer

BOULDER — Sophomore guard Kyleesha Weston will not return to the University of Colorado women’s basketball team for personal reasons, head coach Linda Lappe announced on Tuesday.
She has returned to her native Kansas City, Mo., with the hopes of transferring to a school closer to home.
“I wanted to be closer to my family; I felt like I would be happier here (in Kansas City),” Weston said. “I talked (at length) with my family and some of my teammates. This didn’t happen overnight. I had been thinking about it for a while when I made the decision.
“I still care about each one of my teammates and each one of the coaches and hope to keep a great relationship with them. I wish them the best of luck this year and for years to come.”
Weston played in 30 of 32 games as a true freshman in 2012-13, averaging 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds while dishing out 20 assists and logging 15 steals.
She served as a back-up to All-Pac-12 point guard Chucky Jeffery and had some good moments down the stretch of Colorado’s run to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, playing double-digit minutes in six of the final seven games.
Weston averaged five rebounds during the Pac-12 Tournament; grabbing a personal-best six in the quarterfinal win over Washington. She tallied a career-high eight points three times, including league wins over Arizona (home) and Utah (road).
“We enjoyed having ‘Ky’ at CU, but in the end the distance from home was a big factor in her decision,” Lappe said. “We wish her the best of luck in the future.”
A 2012 graduate of Park Hill High School, she was a finalist for the DiRenna Award as a senior, given to the top boys and girls high school basketball players in the Kansas City metro area. She averaged 18 points and nearly five assists per game, earning All-Suburban Big 6 Conference and Kansas City Star All-Metro honors.
Colorado is in the midst of preparing for a summer trip to Italy, Aug. 12-21, where the Buffaloes are scheduled to play four games against Italian opponents. Colorado finished the 2012-13 season at 25-7, fourth in the Pac-12 at 13-5, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in program history and first since 2004.

CU Football Single Game Tickets Go On Sale Tuesday, 9 a.m.

BOULDER – Single game tickets to University of Colorado football games are on sale starting Tuesday, July 30 at 9 a.m.
Fans can purchase online at www.cubuffs.com/tickets, by phone at 303-492-8337, in person at the CU Athletic Ticket Office between gates 4 and 5 of Folsom Field, or at TicketsWest outlets.
The Buffs open the season on Sunday, Sept. 1 in Denver against Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The CSU game marks the debut of CU head coach Mike MacIntyre.

Single game tickets for Folsom Field contests start at just $30 a game. The home opener for Colorado is Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. against the University of Central Arkansas, followed by a September 14 tilt with Fresno State which will kickoff at noon.
Preseason Pac-12 favorite Oregon will headline Family Weekend on Saturday, October 5. That’s followed by a Homecoming date with Arizona and coach Rich Rodriguez three weeks later on October 26.
In November the Buffs will host a pair of games. First the Cal Bears on Saturday the 16th, then the Folsom Field season finale on Saturday the 23rd with the Trojans of USC.

CU trackster Jenny Simpson Named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Jenny Simpson (Boulder, Colo.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s 1500m at the Monaco Herculis Diamond League meet on July 19.Simpson pushed the pace from the start to win the 1500m race in a season’s best time of 4:00.48. She ran her final 400 meters in 59.28 seconds. Simpson now sits fifth on the current world list.
“It’s always a good feeling to win no matter what the venue,” Simpson said. “Monaco is a special stage though. Having a strong finish against some of the toughest 1500m competition in the world gives me loads of confidence.”
Simpson led as the bell sounded for the final lap, but Kenya’s 1500m national champion Hellen Obiri took the lead from Simpson on the back stretch. But Simpson unleashed a furious kick to regain the lead and achieve her first Diamond League win of the season.
While Simpson finished first, her U.S. contemporaries also fared well. Brenda Martinez, Shannon Rowbury, and Gabrielle Anderson took four of the top five spots. The four Americans all ran under 4:01.50.
“The strength and depth the U.S. middle distance women showed in Monaco was impressive,” Simpson said. “This is the most competitive time for the 1500m I can ever remember. I feel honored to be a part of it.”
The reigning world champion sets her sights on defending her crown in Moscow in just over two weeks.
“This is exactly the momentum I wanted going into World Championships,” Simpson said. “Moscow will require so much focus to get through the preliminary rounds in order for me to even have a shot at defending my title, but I’m excited for the challenge.”
