Boulder’s Valmont Bike Park to get BIG race

Valmont Bike Park selected as host of 2014 USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships
Boulder’s Valmont Bike Park has been selected to host the 2014 USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships. The Cyclo-Cross National Championships is held in January and is expected to bring at least 1,500 athletes and even more spectators to Boulder. According to an Economic Impact Study from the 2009 Cyclo-Cross National Championships, the host that year, Bend, OR, reaped an economic benefit of $1 million from hosting the championships.
USA Cycling made site visits to the three finalist cities of Boulder; Austin, Texas; and Asheville, N.C. earlier this year. The committee visited Valmont Bike Park on Feb. 1. Austin was selected as the host of the 2015 Cyclo-Cross National Championships, and Asheville was selected as the host of the 2016 Cyclo-Cross National Championships.
Defying gravity
“We had three outstanding bids, making the only logical choice to award all three communities,” said USA Cycling Managing Director of National Events Micah Rice. “The decision to award one-year contracts for the championships will also help foster cyclo-cross racing in three distinctively different parts of the country.”
“We are so proud that Valmont Bike Park was chosen to host the 2014 United States Cyclo-Cross National Championships,” said Kirk Kincannon, director of the Boulder Parks and Recreation Department. “This reiterates that we have a world-class park in our community, and we’re thrilled that this investment is paying off so quickly in terms of daily users, programming, events, and now as the host of a USA Cycling event. The Cyclo-Cross Championships should bring an estimated $1 million economic benefit to Boulder.”
“It is a real honor for Parks and Recreation to host this national event,” said Mike Eubank, Valmont Bike Park manager. “The Cyclo-Cross National Championships is like the Super Bowl of cycling. This is tremendous news for Boulder, and especially for all the local cyclists and bike organizations who have been involved in creating this one-of-a-kind bike park.”
“I’m incredibly proud of what our community has created at Valmont Bike Park, and hosting these championships is the next step in affirming the benefits of a dedicated bike park,” said Pete Webber, Valmont course designer and recent Masters World Champion.

Suspects spend thousands after stealing wallet
Police in Boulder are looking for one male and two female suspects who investigators believe are involved in a wallet theft that took place in Whole Foods Market, located at 2905 Pearl St., on Feb. 9.
A female victim was shopping in the store at 10:30 a.m. and left her purse unattended in her cart while she shopped. She realized her wallet was missing from her purse when she tried to check out and pay for her items around 11:25 a.m.
The victim began calling her credit card companies to cancel her cards, but they had already been used for transactions at various stores in Boulder. Thousands of dollars worth of mostly computer items and gift cards were charged to the credit cards before the victim could cancel them.
Here are descriptions of the suspects:
Female #1:
- Hispanic
- 5’5” to 5’6” tall
- 130 pounds
- Long black, waist-level hair
- Dark brown eyes
- Wearing black clothes and high-heeled black boots
- Described by clerk as “stylish”
Female #2:
- Hispanic
- Approximately 40 years old
- 5’3” to 5’4” tall
- 140 pounds
- Black hair
- Light brown eyes
- Wearing a tan beanie-style cap, a tan puffy jacket & blue jeans
Male:
- Hispanic
- Wearing a brown and black leather jacket
- No further information is available, but photo is attached
The case number is 12-1836.
The Boulder Police Department would like to offer some tips for safe shopping:
- Keep your purse in your hands or on your shoulder; never leave it unattended because criminals know your attention will be divided while shopping.
- Keep your cell phone in your pocket.
- Pre-program phone numbers for your banks and all your credit card companies into your phone.
- Alert store security AND call law enforcement immediately if you discover you have been a victim of a theft.
- Call each financial institution immediately after becoming aware of the theft. Criminals know they have a small window of opportunity to use your credit cards before they are flagged as stolen.
- Authorize financial institutions to relase any illegal transaction details to law enforcement for the investigation.
- Don’t keep your Social Security card or any password information in your wallet.

Thief uses stolen credit card to purchase liquor; police looking for suspect
Police in Boulder are looking for a female suspect in connection with the theft of a purse and credit cards on Jan. 16. The theft took place at the Walrus, which is located at 1911 11th St.
A female victim told investigators that she was playing pool with friends when an unknown woman began to engage the group in conversation in an attempt to befriend them. The suspect told the group that her name was “Susan.”

“Susan” spent time playing pool with the victim and her friends during the course of the evening. The victim realized her purse was gone when she was leaving the bar; she said she had left it unattended on one of the tables for a short period of time. “Susan” was also gone.
Several credit cards were in the purse, and the suspect attempted to use them at a number of stores. The suspect was able to purchase liquor at North Boulder Liquors with one of the cards, but other attempted transactions at other stores failed.
Attached is a photo of the suspect, taken from surveillance cameras at North Boulder Liquors. Boulder police are asking for public help in identifying her.
The case number is 12-732.
