Big bucks for zero waste

Funding for zero waste programs available through Boulder County Resource Conservation
Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Resource Conservation Division has allocated $50,000 for its 2012 Community Outreach Program for local organizations looking to fund projects that focus on zero waste, reuse, recycling and composting.
Proposals must be received at the Resource Conservation office by Monday, Nov. 14. Project funding will commence in January.
A pre-proposal workshop will be held from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Boulder County Recycling Center, 1901 63rd St. in Boulder. Attendance is highly recommended for new applicants but not required. Questions about the program and the application process will be answered, and other details provided.

The minimum funding amount available for a project is $1,000 with a maximum of $10,000. Local governments, nonprofit organizations, school districts, schools, private companies and individuals may apply as long as the scope of work is in Boulder County or the City and County of Broomfield, and insurance requirements are met.
With the adoption of Boulder County’s Zero Waste resolution and the Zero Waste Action Plan, the commencement of the single-stream collection and processing program, and curbside composting collection, there are opportunities to support these programs with new Community Outreach Program initiatives.
In addition to the programs supported in prior years, an emphasis on single-stream collections and education and/or zero waste programs (establishing collection of single-stream recyclables, organic materials, etc.) for residents, businesses and governmental buildings is encouraged. However, applications for programs that fall outside of this limited focus will continue to be accepted and considered.

Fourmile Canyon fire findings ready

Preliminary findings of Fourmile Fire report to be presented Friday at open house
Boulder County, Colo. – Just days after the Fourmile Fire began in September 2010, Sen. Mark Udall requested a study of the fire similar to the one he requested after the Hayman Fire in 2002.
The preliminary findings of that study will be presented to Boulder County residents and any interested members of the public at an open house this Friday afternoon in Boulder.
What: Public open house to discuss findings presented in the preliminary report of the Fourmile Canyon Fire Assessment.
When: Friday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the assessment researchers.
Where: Commissioners’ Hearing Room, Boulder County Courthouse, third floor, 1325 Pearl St., Boulder.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Researchers will be available to answer specific questions regarding the report. Representatives from Sen. Udall’s office, Boulder County, the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado State Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management will also be available.
Background
USFS agencies collaborated with the CSFS and assembled a team to conduct the study in December 2010. The study was led by scientists with the USFS’ Rocky Mountain Research Station.
Issues on which the study focuses include the:
- Existing on-the-ground conditions and how they influenced fire behavior
- Success or failure of specific aspects of firefighting activities
- Factors that influenced how and why structures burned
- Existing science related to restoration and protocols in place to learn about recovery

Boulder bike park a winner!

Parks and Recreation Department wins 2011 Colorado Parks and Recreation Association award for Valmont Bike Park
The City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department was awarded the 2011 Colorado Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) Columbine Award for Recreation Facility Design at Valmont Bike Park. The award was presented to Parks and Recreation Director Kirk Kincannon and Recreation Superintendent Alice Guthrie on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the CPRA Annual Conference in Grand Junction.
“This is a great honor for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department,” said Kincannon. “Valmont Bike Park was designed and constructed with the community in mind. Through our extensive public input process, we were able to create a park that appeals to all levels of cyclists and provides a great recreation facility for families. We are thrilled to have this community treasure recognized by the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association.”
The opening of Valmont Bike Park in June 2011 was the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between the community and Boulder Parks and Recreation Department. A 40-acre, natural-surface bike park, Valmont was designed and developed in partnership with the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA), a group representing the area’s active, off-road cycling community. BMA brought volunteers, funding and sport-specific expertise to this ambitious project. BMA also agreed to help with fundraising and long-term stewardship of the bike facility and formed a partnership with the PLAY Boulder Parks Foundation as a mechanism to receive tax-deductible donations.
The park offers trails and features for all ages, riding abilities and styles. It also incorporates the latest sustainable design features including water conservation systems; LEEDTM certified building design, solar photovoltaic power and wildlife-proof recycling and trash containers.
The addition of the park and completion of multi-use trails leading to it elevated Boulder’s League of American Bicyclists’ status from gold to one of only three, Platinum-level bike friendly communities in the U.S. Valmont Bike Park provides new recreation opportunities for the community and competitive venues for local, national and international events.
