Boulder’s Caring Community: Rock Creek Church

Last year, Rock Creek Church, through the leadership of Tucker Roth, organized a van pool to transport our homeless guests from our warming shelter into central Boulder.
Mr. Roth approached BOHO to see how he could help in November of 2011. When he realized that our guests had to travel several miles from East Arapahoe early on Sunday morning, when RTD service is not available, he found his niche.
Seventh Day Baptist Church, at 6710 Arapahoe, opens an emergency warming center for BOHO guests on Saturday nights. At seven A.M. every Sunday morning, most of our guests head into central Boulder to take refuge from the cold in public buildings. A Mapquest search indicates it is almost five miles from the church to the public library – a long walk any time of day, but a tremendous trek through the cold and snow with a heavy backpack in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Through Mr. Roth’s vision and the work of church volunteers, our guests no longer face that Sunday morning ritual. A group of vans from the Rock Creek church started arriving at Seventh Day Baptist and driving into Boulder until everyone at the shelter was transported.
“They make sure nobody is left behind” said Mike Homner, a BOHO board member and volunteer at the centers. “That is their philosophy.”
This year, in addition to this transportation service, Rock Creek became an overflow site for Seventh Day Baptist Church, using it’s van pool on Saturday nights to transport guests to their location in Louisville. They then transport them back on Sunday morning and maintain their trips into central Boulder for all who need it.
Through a flotilla of volunteers, burritos, coffee, hot chocolate and granola bars are served to our guests in the morning before they face the next twelve hours of cold weather without the protection of a home.

New EnergySmart rebates for businesses coming soon

$250k will be available to businesses, commercial property owners from Jan. 1 – Apr. 15
Boulder County, Colo. – Businesses and commercial property owners in Boulder County will be eligible for a new round of rebates for energy efficiency upgrades beginning in the early part of 2013.
EnergySmart is pleased to announce that $250,000 in rebates will be available for eligible business or commercial property projects completed between Jan. 1 and Apr. 15, 2013 or until funds are committed.
“We’re pleased to be able offer these additional incentives to local businesses,” said Boulder County Commissioner Will Toor. “Although funding from the federal ARRA grant will run out in mid-2013, our municipal and county officials and staff are committed to helping businesses continue to implement energy efficient improvements throughout the New Year.”
Already more than 500 EnergySmart Businesses throughout Boulder County have implemented energy efficiency projects that will save them more than $11 million a year. EnergySmart has awarded over $1 million in rebates to businesses since November 2010, supporting the investment of over $6.5 million in energy efficiency projects in commercial buildings located in our communities.
“The savings in power along with the reduced stress on the HVAC system and the overwhelming appreciation from the tenants makes this one of the best investments I have made in Commercial Real Estate,” said Rich Carlisle of BC Properties in Louisville.
EnergySmart is offering rebates to businesses and commercial property owners for over 120 qualifying energy efficiency measures. Previously awarded rebates will not count toward caps in this round. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable energy measures are eligible for rebates for commercial properties that achieve 15% energy savings through EnergySmart.

Interested businesses are encouraged to call an Energy Advisor at 303-441-1300 to ensure your projects meet the eligibility requirements for both EnergySmart and local utility rebates. Payments will be made to qualifying applicants upon completion of projects on a first-come, first-served basis. Projects completed in 2012 are not eligible for 2013 rebate funds.

COLORADO’S JEFFERY IS ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Colorado guard Chucky Jeffery as its Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 16. The USBWA’s weekly honor will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 19 this season.
As the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week, Jeffery was nominated for weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.
Jeffery, a 5-10 senior guard from Colorado Springs, Colo., scored a game- and season-high 22 points as Colorado upset then-No. 8 Louisville 70-66 after scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing five assists in an 83-63 road triumph at Denver. Her play for the week resulted in the Lady Buffs crashing the Associated Press rankings for the first time since the 2007-08 season, landing coach Linda Lappe’s team at No. 25. The win over Louisville in Boulder was the first over a Top 10 opponent since the 2002 season. On the week, Jeffery averaged 18.0 points on 44 percent shooting and 9.0 rebounds in two games.
Since the 1987-88 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. At the Women’s NCAA Final Four in Denver last April, the organization announced going forward that the national and weekly player award has been named for Hall of Famer and former UCLA All-American Ann Meyers Drysdale. At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA. The winner of the 2013 Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year will be announced and presented at the USBWA’s annual awards breakfast in New Orleans, site of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Final Four.
Several other women’s awards are also to be announced later this season associated with more famous names in women’s basketball history. At last season’s Women’s Final Four it was also announced that former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, who was the female recipient of the Most Courageous Award for her battle against early onset dementia, Alzheimer type, would have that award named in her honor.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected a women’s All-America team since the 1996-97 season.
