Buffs Host Inaugural Jerry Quiller Classic

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track & field team will host the inaugural Jerry Quiller Classic, March 15-16, at Potts Field.
The meet, which had previously been the Potts Outdoor Invitational, has been named in honor of the former CU track and field and cross country coach Jerry Quiller, who passed away in 2012 after losing a battle against multiple myeloma.
Quiller served as the head coach for the Buffs from 1985-1995. In that time, he coached the Buffs to three Big Eight Conference Cross Country titles and made a dozen (men and women) appearances at the NCAA Championships. He was named the league’s coach of the year five times in that span and directed 19 All-Americans (13 men and six women), including Olympians Adam Goucher and Alan Culpepper. In 1994, CU’s men placed second and the women were fourth at nationals, earning him national coach of the year accolades.
Colorado will compete against several Front Range schools this weekend. Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State, Air Force, Metro State, Northern Colorado and UC-Colorado Springs, along with South Dakota School of Mines will make up the majority of competitors with CU, but there will be several other athletes competing unattached or as a member of a club. The invitational is a non-team scoring meet.
The hammer throw and javelin will be the only events contested on Friday; starting at 2 p.m. Saturday’s events will start at 11 a.m. and will wrap up around 3:45 p.m.
The Jerry Quiller Classic is the first of two meets CU will host this spring. The Buffs will also host the CU Invitational April 12-13. Both take place at Potts Field on 30th and Colorado. Admission is free. The forecast for Friday is mostly sunny with a high of 70 degrees and Saturday has a high of 56 degrees and a 30 percent chance of rain (as of Thursday afternoon).

Boulder police: suspect wanted in three burglaries

The most recent occurred at Bottles, located at 2520 Arapahoe Ave. on February 26, 2013.
Surveillance footage from the store shows a male suspect entering the business at 6:24 p.m. He left the store area and entered the back office several times. Owners report that cash was missing from the office after the suspect left the business.
A still photo from Bottles’ surveillance video is attached. Also attached are separate surveillance photos from two business burglaries on the Pearl Street Mall which police are also investigating. Detectives believe the same male suspect is involved in all three crimes. The Pearl Street Mall businesses (the Lazy Dog and Pizza Colore) were burglarized on February 4, 2013.
The suspect is described as:
- White male
- 20 – to – 40 years old
- 5’10” – 6’0” tall
- Thin build
- Short, dark hair
In the Bottles’ burglary, the suspect wore a long-sleeve white shirt covered by a long-sleeve plaid shirt, jeans, white tennis shoes and a light-colored baseball cap. Black gloves can be seen in his back pocket.
In the Pearl Street Mall burglaries, the suspect wore a red-plaid, short-sleeve shirt, jeans and a tan-colored baseball cap.
The case number for the Bottles’ burglary is 13-2628. The case number for the Lazy Dog burglary is 13-1525 and the case number for Pizza Colore is 13-1523.

City of Boulder begins seasonal grassland raptor closures

The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) is temporarily closing areas in order to protect nesting and roosting burrowing owls and osprey. Properties where burrowing owls nest will be closed from March 15 through Oct 31. Properties closed for the protection of nesting osprey will be closed from March 15 through Sept. 10. Closures may be lifted early if monitoring indicates it is appropriate.
The following property will be closed for the protection of osprey:
Axelson (northwest of Boulder Reservoir; portions closed).
The following properties will be closed for the protection of burrowing owls:
- Damyanovich/Yunker (north of Marshall Drive, between Cherryvale Road and US 36);
- Jafay/Lynch (north of Lookout Road and east of 75th Street);
- Cosslett/Knaus (South of Lookout Road and east of 75th Street);
- Kelsall (north of High-Plains Trail, trail remains open);
- Mesa Sand and Gravel (east of 66th Street, south of Marshall Drive); and
- Superior Associates (north of High-Plains Trail, trail remains open).
These closures were established to protect sensitive species. Burrowing owls nest in prairie dog burrows and their populations are declining in Colorado. This bird is listed as threatened by the Colorado Division of Wildlife has been listed as endangered or as a species of “special concern” in 12 US states and in Canada. Staff will be monitoring these sites and others during the spring and summer to understand more about the distribution and breeding biology of this owl on city property.
City of Boulder relies heavily on the public to respect the closures, and the cooperation of visitors to avoid these areas is greatly appreciated. Trespass violations can result in a summons with penalties up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
