9-17-2013 8:45 a.m. Left Hand Water District Approves Emergency Declaration, Boil order reduced to foothills

  • Email

On Monday, September 16, 2013, the Board of Directors of the Left Hand Water District adopted a Resolution Declaring an Emergency Flooding Disaster within District Boundaries.  The full text of the resolution is available atwww.lefthandwater.org.

“The Left Hand Water District has experienced significant damage as a result of the unprecedented flooding in Boulder and Weld Counties. The District’s Board of Directors has adopted an emergency declaration resolution to ensure the District will have every resource available to it in order to proceed with our recovery efforts,” said Chris Smith, the District’s General Manager.

The boil water order for the Left Hand Water District changed Tuesday. It was rescinded for most areas, but remains in effect for areas along Foothills Highway from Neva Road north, Nelson Road from Foothills Highway to Tollgate, 39th and 41st Streets from Plateau Road to Nimbus Road, Oxford Road from 41st Street to Ogallala. Therefore, residents in Foothills Ranch, Hardt Estates, L’heureux Country Estates, Mountain Ridge, Sage Valley, Crestview Estates and McNair Meadows subdivisions should still boil their water.

Lyons businesses invited back for damage assessment

The Town of Lyons made the determination today to only allow businesses to come in to Lyons today during daylight hours to assess damage and take care of things as necessary. The town is still without power, water or sewer, so businesses and residents are asked to come in as they are allowed during the day, but to leave before dark. The town administrator and town board express their utter appreciation for the patience their community is giving them.

If plans remain in place, residents of Lyons will be allowed in tomorrow. In order to be sensitive to the residents who have been asked to stay away from their homes for one more day, we are only allowing a media tour of the downtown Lyons business area. We will work on a neighborhood tour tomorrow, after residents have been allowed back in.

Please monitor Twitter @BoulderOEM or Office of Emergency Management Web site for updated information.

Book Review by Donna Marek
The Treason of Mary Louvestre published by Koehler Book Author Dr. My Haleydonna 3

On Saturday, September 7, I happened to be at Barnes & Noble
Bookstore in Boulder and met author Dr. My Haley, widow of famed
author Alex Haley (“Roots”).  She collaborated with her husband
on that book, worked in tandem with him and they married in 1977.
She was at B & N for her book signing
of The Treason of Mary Louvestre published by Koehler Books.
Dr. Haley is a lovely woman, with a PhD in Communications who teaches at a University.

My Haley

When I walked into the area, she was alone with her publicist which
was a good opportunity to have a candid talk about her writing.  We did. I chose not to talk about her husband because I thought it was her special day.
Haley’s book is a historical drama based on real events involving the civil war and  espionage against the confederacy.
She told me she is excited to have written the book
about the brave  heroine, Mary Louvestre, who was a seamstress in her mid 50’s in 1861.
Louvestre stole plans to the USS Virginia and thereby committed
treason.  Instead of facing death for her acts as a spy, she traveled
through a storm to meet with the Secretary of Navy.  Later she received awards for her work.
This is the first of 6 books in a series in the works for Dr. Haley.
Upon leaving, I wished her continued success and told her I was
going to walk through the store and send people her way.
Evidently it worked.  The next day the store’s manager told
me that numerous people did attend her signing.
Lovely afternoon for the “per-chance” meeting.

A personal profile of a 2013 Boulder flood victim by Donna Marek

Sally Johnson, Cafe’ Manager at Barnes & Noble in Boulder, said her daughter, a
kindergardner student at Lyons Elementary, is one of several little children
moving to the old Longmont High School on Main Street due to the Lyons school’s
flood damage. Johnson said she found out about the school’s damage at 4am
on Thursday when she received an email from the school district.
Johnson’s first concern was for her daughter having to move to a
new school and not knowing other students since she has just been in schooldonna 1
one month. That anxiety was lessened when Johnson learned all the students
from her daughter’s class will be together.

Her daughter told her friends “My school is closed because a big huge tree
fell across the road.” “That’s all she knows,” Johnson said.
She has not told her daughter about the change of schools because she will “be asking me every five minutes
when school starts.” “I tell her she’s on break.”
The Lyons school children will be out of classes for a week.
Johnson said the school’s teacher sent an email offering to help in any way.
Johnson credits the Superintendent of the St Vrain Schools. “He did a good job being on top
of it.” She will tell her daughter the day before school starts.
Johnson said there is a meeting of all parents on Wednesday, September 18 when
other details will be made available.
