Avs Takes Game From Wild
Apr 18th
Erik Haula all but secured the Minnesota Wild’s Game 1 win Thursday night.
As the puck slid down the ice, the crowd was holding its breath while defenseman Erik Johnson was racing after it. Just before it crossed the goal line Johnson dove and knocked it away with 1:32 left in regulation, keeping the Colorado Avalanche within a goal.
“It’s three inches from losing the game,” center Paul Stastny said. “If that doesn’t happen, that hustle out of EJ, we’re not here in this moment.”
“This moment” was basking in the glow of another thrilling win by the won’t-quit Avalanche. Given another chance by Johnson, Stastny sent the game into overtime with 13.4 seconds left and then scored 7:27 into the extra period to give Colorado a 5-4 win and a 1-0 series lead.
Johnson’s hustle epitomized what the Avalanche has been all season – relentless and confident.
“That was certainly a key moment,” coach Patrick Roy said of Johnson. “There are a lot of key moments in the game. This one was probably one.”
It was a winning moment in a game full of them for the Avalanche. Rookie Nathan MacKinnon showed poise way beyond his years with three assists, two of which came on Stastny’s equalizer and winner.

Avs First Postseason Since 2010
Apr 17th
This is the Avalanches first postseason game since 2010, and it’s tough to tell who is more excited – the fans or the players and coaches.
Colorado has generated a buzz from opening night, and the playoff fever has grown with every exciting win.
“I know we’re going to have a great crowd tonight here, and I know our fans are going to be very excited,” Roy said. “All year our players wanted to please our fans. All year they wanted to make the playoffs. Here we are, we haven’t seen a playoff game in four years, and I’m sure our fans are as excited as we are and there’s going to be a lot of people here and I expect them to be on their feet.”
Pepsi Center has a throwback feel, going back to the days when Roy backstopped the team. Players witnessed it at Thursday’s morning skate.
“Just going out there and seeing all the white flags in the seats brings a lot of excitement to the building,” Johnson said. “I know Denver fans have been waiting a long time for a team to cheer for in the playoffs. This is going to be a fun night for everybody.”

Pitcher De La Rosas Duel
Apr 17th
Wednesday night wasn’t Rockies Jorge De La Rosa’s dream. But it wasn’t a nightmare, or at least it wasn’t a nightmare of his doing. Sometimes you take what you can get.
After three short and horrid starts, De La Rosa went six innings and was hurt more by misfortune than missed pitches in a 4-2 loss to the Padres at Petco Park in front of 17,428.
De La Rosa (0-3) had one poorly located pitch early — Tommy Medica’s leadoff home run in the second — but otherwise made a good percentage of his pitches while giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits (two damaging infield hits in the fifth), with four strikeouts and a walk.
“I feel good, but we still lost the game,” De La Rosa said. “No matter how I did, it’s my fault when a mistake is made and we lose the game.”
