CU netster Aiello wins 10 singles matches
Nov 9th
Aiello won her 10th singles match of the fall, a team high, defeating Katie Brozovich of Bowling Green, 6-0, 6-4. It was also Aiello’s seventh straight win. Manzi Tenorio bounced back with a pair of wins over the last two days at the WMU Invite after starting on the short-end during the month of September, where she dropped a few matches. The senior from Cali, Colombia, also defeated a Bowling Green opponent, Brittany Plaszewski in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3). The singles field consists of 10 round robin draws of four players each, with each player playing a round of singles on each day.
The doubles field, however, will consist of a bracketed draw of 16, with two rounds of doubles over the last two days. All matches will be played at West Hills Athletic Club, a 10-court indoor facility operated by the University. The scoring at the WMU Super Challenge will be done using an experimental format. Singles matches will be played with tiebreakers at 5-5 and a third-set super tiebreaker if necessary, and doubles matches will be played to six games, also with a tiebreaker at 5-5. CU also won a doubles match on the day as junior Julyette Steur and freshman Nuria Ormeño Ruiz defeated Western Michigan’s team of Ashby/Sujashvili, 6-4. The final day of the WMU Invite will conclude Sunday with singles play.

Steur and Aiello shine at Lobo Invitational
Nov 4th
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of Colorado junior Julyette Steur and sophomore Alex Aiello each won their respective singles bracket championships at the three-day University of New Mexico Invitational Sunday morning.
The weekend event also had teams from New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon, Texas-El Paso, and Texas Tech.
With the pair of title wins, the Buffaloes also tacked on another pair of victories to claim third place finishes by freshman Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Winde Janssens, also played during the morning session.
The four wins on the day improved CU’s three-day Lobo Invite singles record to 13-5.
“I’m really happy of the level competition we played against on the third day,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We had solid performances and it was a great effort by Alex and Julyette for winning their flights. Overall, it was a solid three days of competition and a good weekend in all CU sports. Congratulations to the cross country team’s success, as well as volleyball and soccer.”
Steur won her third straight match as she defeated Priscilla Annoual of Grand Canyon, 6-2, 7-5 to win the Cherry Singles Bracket. Steur improves to 5-1 this season.
In the third place match, freshman Nuria Ormeño Ruiz rallied from a set down to edge Davina Meza (Texas-El Paso) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Ormeño Ruiz won her eighth match of her initial season with the Buffs and for the second time, successfully won a match when pushed to three sets.
In the Silver Singles Bracket, Aiello was also pushed to three sets defeating New Mexico’s Emily Oliver, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Aiello won her fifth straight and now has won eight of 10 matches already this fall campaign. She remains perfect in three set matches at 3-0.
The Buffaloes also claimed another third place tally in the Silver Bracket as senior Winde Janssens defeated Texas Tech’s Sarah Toti, 6-3, 6-1. Janssens win was her 44th of her career moving into 34th overall on the all-time CU singles list.
CU came up short in the Turquoise Singles Bracket as junior Ashley Tiefel lost in the finals to Texas Tech’s Beatriz Santos, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Carla Manzi Tenorio lost to UNM’s Rachana Bhat for third place, 6-1, 6-1.
The Buffs looks to continue their strong fall play in the final tournament of the season next weekend at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Nov. 8-10.

Sanders Shines As Buffs Fall 5-2 To No. 53 Utah
Apr 20th
BOULDER – Erin Sanders stood out in her final regular season match as a Buffalo as the University of Colorado tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 53 Utah on Saturday at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
The Buffs end the season with a 7-14 overall, 2-8 Pac-12 Conference record, matching last year’s overall win total, but marking a milestone with their two conference victories (Colorado entered the match tied for eighth in the conference standings). All 12 of CU’s final opponents were either ranked, had at least one ranked player or doubles team or both (as is the case for eight of the teams). The No. 53 Utes, who boast No. 92 Tereza Bekerova in singles and No. 32 Bekerova/Miles in doubles, improve to 11-8, 5-5 Pac-12.
“Congrats to Utah,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “They played a great match. It’s a bummer that we didn’t get the win. It would have been really nice to get our last match at home, with it being senior day. We’ll continue to work hard. I think we have a bright future ahead of us. I look forward to next weekend in Ojai. It’s all individual play, so it’s a little bit different.”
Senior Erin Sanders claimed the 29th singles victory of her career with a win in straight sets over Natasha Smith. She eased through her first set 6-2, and looked poised to blank Smith in the second set. Sanders was up 5-0 when Smith came fighting back, winning four straight games, but Sanders cut the comeback short to claim the set 6-4.
“I think it was honestly just the fact that I really wanted to win,” Sanders said. “I wasn’t going to let her take it to a third set.”
The win was Sanders’ third in the Pac-12, in addition to her two match-clinching victories over Arizona and No. 59 Oregon. Sanders recorded eight wins in dual play in her final season. The win also marked her 23rd victory in straight sets.
“It’s always great seeing a senior finish on their last match with a win,” Kenneally said. “It’s really great. I know she’s really happy, and we’re really happy for her. We wanted the team win, but it’s really great that she finished it off with a solid performance.”
Though she dropped her first set 2-6, Carla Manzi Tenorio earned a victory over Lucia Kovarcikova when Kovarcikova retired before the start of the second set. Manzi Tenorio now leads the Buffs with 41 career singles wins, including four in the Pac-12.
With the regular season now complete, the Buffs head to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-12 Conference Championships beginning Thursday, April 25. The tournament consists of a 32-singles draw with three players from each of the top 10 Pac-12 schools and two players from the 11th place team, based on regular season standings. The 16-team women’s doubles draw will have one doubles team from each of the 11 schools and five additional teams selected by the Draw Committee.
