New financial educator to help CU-Boulder students navigate money matters

In an effort to help University of Colorado Boulder students make smart financial decisions about their budgets, credit, school loans and other money matters, a new campus financial educator will be available to students beginning Aug. 26, the first day of fall semester classes.
The CU Money Sense program was created by the Bursar’s Office in 2009 to provide student financial workshops and other educational opportunities including “Money Smart Week,” according to Susie Jacobs, the program’s director.
“This year our program added a new financial educator position to provide our students with one-on-one education sessions,” Jacobs said.
Niomi Williams, the new financial educator, will offer the free one-on-one sessions in order to give CU-Boulder students — and alumni — a financial leg up in what can be a challenging chapter in many young adults’ lives.
“When I was a recent college graduate, I found myself with student loan and credit card debt and not enough income,” Williams said. “I didn’t know how to manage my finances, I was a mess. My goal in this new position is to help students steer clear of money mistakes and lay the foundation for a stable financial future.”
While all individuals’ needs will be different, Williams said students can request a one-on-one session with her to cover basic financial questions such as how to organize and budget money, a challenging task for many people. Or they can just come in to talk about other financial issues or questions they may have.
“For many students, college is the first time they have to really manage their money, everything from paying rent to understanding how much their student loan payments will be when they graduate,” she said.
Williams said she won’t be offering investment or tax advice, but she hopes she can help students excel in money management.
“Once I learned how to organize and control my finances, all the pressure and financial stress I had been feeling went away,” she said.

Alleged serial bike thief gets caught

A serial thief who has stolen bikes from University of Colorado students on at least three occasions has been arrested. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wayne Willet Cron last week on an outstanding warrant requested by the University of Colorado Police Department. On June 6, 2013, the District Attorney’s Office charged Cron with three felonies – Theft between $1,000 to $20,000 (Class 4 felony), Theft By Receiving (Class 4 felony) and Providing False Information to a Pawnbroker (Class 6 felony).
Cron, a 40-year-old transient, was also arrested in 2005 and 2010 for stealing bikes from CU students. In the most recent case, a CU student reported that someone had cut a cable lock on Jan. 17, 2013, near the Ekeley Sciences Building to steal his brand-new $3,000 Cannondale mountain bike.
On March 23, 2013, the victim contacted UCPD to say he found his bike listed for sale on the eBay website. A YouTube video on that site briefly showed part of the bike’s serial number, which matched the victim’s stolen bike. UCPD detectives contacted the listed seller, a Denver pawnshop, and learned that Cron sold the Cannondale bike to the pawnshop on Jan. 17, 2013 – the same day of the reported theft. On that day, Cron signed documents stating he had owned the bike for one year and acknowledged that providing false information was a felony.
UCPD recovered the bike and returned it to the rightful owner. UCPD requested that a judge approve an arrest warrant for Cron. The suspect has an extensive criminal history in five states, including arrests for burglary, larceny and pawn violations.
“The keys to solving this case started with the victim knowing his bike’s serial number and ended with solid detective work,” said CU-Boulder police spokesman Ryan Huff. “It’s critical that CU students register their bikes so they can be more easily located if stolen. This case also shows that cable locks are easily defeated. U-locks are a better option for securing your bike.”
The CU Police Department asks students, faculty and staff to register their bicycle’s serial number at the CU Bike Station, just east of the University Memorial Center. If their bikes are ever stolen, police have a better chance of finding them by accessing a nationwide database. CU police: Suspect in rash of thefts is arrested

Raymond Webster Hamilton, wanted for questioning in a pattern of recent wallet thefts at three university campuses, is in custody.
Hamilton, 26, of Denver, is a suspect wanted in connection with the theft of an iPad at the University of Colorado Boulder over the summer. He is also a person of interest in at least 23 cases of wallet and laptop thefts at CU-Boulder, CU Anschutz Medical Campus and the Colorado School of Mines.
State parole officers arrested Hamilton in Denver on Monday, November 19, 2012. He declined to speak to a CU-Boulder police detective on scene. The investigation into the wallet and laptop thefts is ongoing. Hamilton was booked into the Denver County Downtown Detention Center on charges of providing false information to a pawn broker, three fugitive holds and a parole violation. He is being held without bond.
“We thank the media for their assistance in publicizing these cases, and we thank the public for their tips that led to this arrest,” said CU-Boulder Police spokesman Ryan Huff. “At the same time, we remind the campus community that they need to stay vigilant in protecting their valuable items.”
CU-Boulder police worked with Lakewood police to obtain an arrest warrant for Hamilton. He is not a CU student. The following is a chronology of recent thefts at the three universities:
- Hamilton pawned an iPad just hours after it was stolen from a CU-Boulder Visual Arts Complex office on July 25, 2012. As a result of that case, Hamilton had an active arrest warrant for pawning stolen property (a Class 6 felony) to a Lakewood pawn broker.
- On Oct. 17, 2012, someone stole five wallets and a laptop from CU-Boulder academic building offices and the University Memorial Center.
- On Oct. 19, 2012, someone stole three wallets from offices at the Colorado School of Mines. A CSM Police Department investigation determined that Hamilton is a person of interest in at least one of those cases.
- On Oct. 24, 2012, someone stole wallets and purses from 14 offices at CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Surveillance video of the suspect resembles Hamilton.

The CU Police Department reminds the campus community to keep lockers and offices secured when unattended. In common areas, such as dining facilities, libraries or the University Memorial Center, never leave laptops, mobile phones or other valuable items unattended – even if just stepping away for a few minutes.
