All Is Lost

“All Is Lost” Is Almost Hopeless

“Almost Hopeless”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

All Is Lost stars Robert Redford and was made from a script nearly free of dialogue and only 32 pages long.

All Is Lost

However, that script could have been shortened to only one sentence: “A man is lost at sea all alone on a small crippled sailboat and struggles to survive.”

When the movie opens, we hear Redford’s voice say, “I tried to be true. I tried to be right. But I wasn’t. I’m sorry.”

Later on, we will learn the significance of those words and where they appear in the story, but first we see a title that says, “8 Days Earlier,” and the story begins.

Called only “Our Man” in the credits, Redford is asleep below deck on his 39-foot yacht when he is awakened by a loud noise and sees water coming into the cabin.

His boat has struck a floating cargo shipping container hard enough to damage both his boat and the container, which is now spilling its contents into the ocean.

And then we watch him struggle to survive and begin to consider our own mortality as surely as he considers his own.

He tries to repair the hole in the boat as best he can, pumps the water out of the cabin and cleans and dries it.

He dries and cleans his radio, finds a signal, and sends out the message, “This is the Virginia Jean with an SOS call. Over,” but he gets no response.

When a storm comes, he tries to secure everything aboard and puts on his gear for wet weather, but he gets knocked overboard.

His boat gets damaged even more, and later he also suffers a nasty gash to his forehead.

With water coming into the boat even more now, he gets his life raft, inflates it, and secures it to the boat and gets ready to abandon ship.

The water in the cabin is now up to his chest, and he retrieves everything he believes he will need, puts it all in the covered life boat, and climbs into it.

One of the items is a sextant, which is still in its box, appears to have been a gift, and he has to read the instructions on how to use it, so that he can plot his position on his navigation map.

All Is Lost is almost hopeless.

“Straw Dogs” an Exercise in Violence

“Another Unnecessary Remake”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

Straw Dogs is a remake of the classic 1971 film starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George that was directed by acclaimed director Sam Peckinpah, who was known for the violence in his movies.

This 2011 version stars James Marsden and Kate Bosworth and was directed by Rod Lurie, and the location has been changed from a small town in western England to a small town in Southern Mississippi.

The title comes from the straw dogs that were used as ceremonial objects in ancient China. They were used as sacrifices, dressed up, put on the altar, and then when the ceremony was over, they were thrown into the street.

David and Amy are married, and when they drive into Blackwater, Mississippi, where Amy grew up, she mentions that the young good ol’ boys in town don’t have much to do anymore after their glory days of high-school football are over, and David compares them to the “straw dogs” of ancient China.

David is a Hollywood screenwriter, Amy recently starred in a television series, and they are in Blackwater because Amy’s father died and they are there to fix up his house and then sell it.

So, when they meet Charlie in town and find out that he has a small construction business, they hire Charlie to repair the roof on the barn.

Charlie says, “We take care of our own here,” and then he says to Amy, “Remember when I took care of you?”

And that is when David learns that Amy and Charlie had been high-school sweethearts.

Well, you can see where this is going, can’t you? Charlie and his construction team are rude and obnoxious, they ogle Amy because of the provocative way she dresses, and they belittle David almost every chance they get, because he doesn’t understand their small-town Southern culture, doesn’t fit in, and unknowingly insults them.

And then when Charlie and the boys invite David to go hunting with them, David feels obligated to go with them as a gesture of good will, but, of course, things don’t end well.

Things don’t end well at all, which can also be said about the whole movie.

There are some small subplots that attempt to flesh out the main plot, but basically the movie is an exercise in violence.

Straw Dogs is just another unnecessary remake.

Horrible Bosses Movie

“Horrible Bosses” Great Fun

0

Official Website

“Great Fun”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

Horrible Bosses has built right into the title that the bosses in question are much worse than just “bad bosses,” doesn’t it, but the best thing about it is that the movie might just be better and much funnier than you expected it to be.

Horrible Bosses

So, if you have ever had a bad boss or, worse yet, a horrible boss, you owe it to yourself to see this movie and be prepared to laugh your head off.

On the other hand, if you have ever been accused of being a bad boss, or if you think you might have been a bad boss, then you owe it to your employees to see this movie and perhaps learn how to repair the error of your ways.

No, I’ll make it easier for you: Are you now or have you ever been a boss? Then see this movie, even if you have just known a boss, but don’t expect to get any tips from it, either on how to be a bad boss or how to handle a bad boss.

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis star in the movie, but they are not the bosses of the title. They are the ones who have the bad bosses, who are played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell, respectively, although you might not recognize Colin Farrell at first.

Early in the movie, Spacey tells Bateman’s character, Nick, “If you want a promotion, you’ve got to earn it.”

And then Spacey does everything in his boss powers to prevent Nick from getting a promotion.

Well, Nick, Dale, and Kurt are friends going back to high school, and they meet regularly for drinks. One night while they are engaged in a mutual commiseration society, they come up with the idea to kill their bosses.

I didn’t say it was a good idea.

They know that they can’t do it themselves without getting caught, and after one hilarious attempt to hire a hit man on the Internet, they end up paying Jamie Foxx in a great performance as their “murder consultant.”

Now, because this is a comedy, you know that everything isn’t going to go as planned, even though the plan seems so simple and even draws from the great mystery writers and also Alfred Hitchcock.

Horrible Bosses is great fun.

I’m Dan Culberson and this is “Hotshots.”
