Boulder Collects Donations For Japanese Sister City

The Boulder-Yamagata City Friendship Committee is seeking financial support for Japanese
refugees. It is working with the UN Habitat and Japan Habitat Association to raise funds for
victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan earlier this month.

The largest earthquake in recorded history to hit Japan triggered a tsunami with 23-foot waves
and more than 50 aftershocks that devastated cities and villages along a 1,300-mile coastline.
Victims are taking refuge in Boulder’s Sister City of Yamagata, which is dealing with the fallout
of two natural disasters and currently facing the potential meltdown of nuclear power plants
about 200 miles outside of Yamagata.
Refugees need daily living essentials such as food, water, diapers, powdered milk and clothing.
The Friendship Committee is working with friends in Yamagata to coordinate delivery of
supplies and offer comfort to those people who have been displaced by earthquake, tsunami and now from nuclear crisis.
Boulder-Yamagata City Friendship Committee is soliciting financial contributions and is
working with Yamagata Bank, Yamagata, Japan, to distribute funds to the UN Habitat and Japan

Youth Opportunities Advisory Board applications now available
Applications are currently available for the City of Boulder 2011-2012 Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB). High school age City of Boulder residents are eligible to apply. No previous leadership experience is required.
YOAB members make funding decisions on grant proposals for youth programs, advise city government and local agencies on youth-related issues and plan events for youth. Applications are due April 8, 2011. YOAB is part of the Department of Housing and Human Services, Youth Opportunities Program. South Boulder Recreation Center annual shutdown March 21-April 3

Boulder police identify bank robbery suspect
An arrest warrant has been issued for 48-year-old Michael Shawn Latiolais (DOB 09/27/62) in connection with the armed robberies of the Boulder Valley Credit Union and a Circle K convenience store. He is wanted on two felony charges of Aggravated Robbery.
Witnesses identified Latiolais as the suspect in both robberies. He is a white male, 165 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. Police believe he may be driving a 1995 silver Ford Ranger pickup truck, with Colorado license plate 134-GRV.
The Circle K robbery took place on Feb. 28 around 10:45 p.m. at the store located at 3185 28th St. in Boulder. The Boulder Valley Credit Union (located at 2667 Broadway) was robbed the next morning, March 1 at 9:45 a.m. In both robberies, the suspect produced a note demanding cash and claiming to have a gun, though no witnesses ever saw a weapon. No one was hurt in either robbery.
An armed robbery that took place at a Wells Fargo branch on Canyon Boulevard on Feb. 28 is believed to be unrelated to the robberies at the Circle K and the Boulder Valley Credit Union. Boulder police arrested 23-year-old William Anthony Chren III (DOB 08/26/87) in connection with that case.
Boulder detectives have been working with the FBI and other local agencies on all of these cases.
