Boulder Creek Path underpass closures will impact Bike to Work Day routes

The Boulder Creek multi-use path will be closed at three underpasses throughout Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, June 22. Detours are in place, with cones and signs posted at the sites to direct riders to alternate routes. Bicyclists are advised to be aware of wet conditions elsewhere on the path.
The Boulder Creek path is currently closed at the following underpasses:
Arapahoe Avenue and 13th Street;
South of Boulder High School; and
Valmont Road, east of 55th Street.
These underpass closures are due to water overflow from the creek.
There are also wet conditions, where water has come over the sidewalk but the path is not yet flooded, at the following underpasses:
· 30th Street, near Scott Carpenter Park;
· Broadway; and
· Folsom Street, near Taft Drive.
Bikers and all other users are advised to use caution while in these areas.
The city anticipates water levels in Boulder Creek to continue to rise as temperatures increase for the next several weeks. Stay tuned for other safety announcements including potential tubing bans.

Fourteenth Annual Circle Boulder by Bicycle to be held June 5

The City of Boulder Utilities Division’s will host its 14th Annual Circle Boulder by Bicycle, B-360 or B-180 self-guided ride, on Sunday, June 5, rain or shine. This leisurely, non-competitive ride follows the city’s bikeways beginning and ending at Scott Carpenter Park, 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, and is open to all ages and abilities. The fun, community ride showcases Boulder’s world-class bike path system.
Riders can register for free and start the ride for the 25-mile B-360 between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Those who want to participate in the shorter, 18-mile B-180 can register for free and begin the ride between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Participants who may need extra time for either ride can register at 2:30 p.m.
This year’s route will highlight the newly-completed underpass at 30th Street and two new path connections: on the west side of Foothills Parkway, connecting to the Goose Creek Path, and from 48th Street, connecting to the Boulder Creek Path. Participants will loop around Boulder using a linking network of paths, neighborhood streets and unpaved trails.
A free, post-ride party will take place at Scott Carpenter Park, where the ride began. The free party starts at 5 p.m.
Riders are reminded to carry water and wear appropriate gear, including a helmet. Participants must stay on trails and yield to other users. No dogs are allowed.

Boulder police gearing up for 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run
The Boulder Police Department’s 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. The event will consist of a 4-mile run/bike portion, as well as a 1-mile walk and parade. Dozens of police officers, City of Boulder employees and their families and friends are expected to participate.
The registration deadline for this event is Wednesday, May 18. This year, a youth registration was added and kids under the age of 15 can register for a reduced fee of $20, which includes a T-shirt. The regular registration fee is $30. Members of the public are invited to join officers for the Torch Run. To register online, go to www.firstgiving.com/soco.
The goal of the annual Torch Run is to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and people with intellectual disabilities.
Walk/Parade
Participants will start at the Public Safety Building at 1805 33rd St. in Boulder, and then start walking south along 33rd Street to the north sidewalk of Arapahoe Avenue. From there, the group will walk east to the 38th Street underpass for the Boulder Creek Path. The remainder of the walk will be along the creek path to Scott Carpenter Park. Walkers can either reverse their direction along the same path or use the signal light intersection pedestrian crosswalk at 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue to return to the Public Safety Building.
Run/Bike
The 4-mile run/bike portion will start and finish at Scott Carpenter Park. Participants will use the Boulder Creek Path, leaving from Scott Carpenter Park headed west to a turn-around point at the Library bridge. From there, the route will be back along the creek path, east to the 38th Street underpass and back to the park.
