Rental Matching Service Available for Displaced Boulder County Residents

Collaboration will help address shortage of rental housing supply
Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County residents displaced by the recent flooding now have another tool to help them find available rental housing. A regional service that matches renters with property owners is working with residents to place them in short-term rental units, and is waiving most of its fees for the matching service.
Boulder County, the cities of Boulder and Longmont, Foothills United Way, and Housing Helpers partnered to create and roll out the rental housing plan. Housing Helpers is working with property owners and has identified about 60 units that would work as short-term solutions for those in need to continue to live in or near Boulder County.
“We know there’s not much rental housing available in Boulder County for our neighbors who’ve been displaced by the flooding, especially those who don’t yet know when they can return to their homes” said Jeff Yegian, Acting Manager of the City of Boulder’s Division of Housing. “This is a solution for some of them, and we want to encourage those residents most in need to get in touch now to find out more.”
Residents impacted by the flooding who are seeking short-term rental housing can contact Housing Helpers by phone at 303-545-6000 or on the web at www.HousingHelpers.com to see if they qualify for the service. Property owners offering short-term rental options for individuals or families displaced by the flooding are encouraged to call Housing Helpers to list their property at no charge. Additional information on housing resources, including financial assistance that may be available for short-term housing, can be found at www.BoulderCountyFlood.org, www.BoulderFloodInfo.net, and www.LongmontOEM.com.
“We still want our neighbors to know that most of the available rental housing is located outside Boulder County, mostly to our south and east,” said Frank Alexander, Director of the Boulder County Department of Housing and Human Services. “Regardless of whether people look for rentals through this matching service or on their own, we hope that they do it right away and that they understand it might be necessary to relocate outside the area for some time.”
Stranger approaches provoke police warning

Recently, parents have reported that a male in a white SUV has approached children and at least one adult in a large geographic area in Boulder, which includes the area of the 2200 block of Balsam, the 400 block of Highland and the 2000 block of Alpine Avenue.
No one has been able to provide a concrete description of the SUV or the possible suspect, and the people approached are both males and females from 7-to-20 years old. One of those who reported being contacted by the male says she was offered a ride and ran away. Others say a white SUV approached them but that the person driving it didn’t speak to them. An adult who noticed a white SUV told police that a man was sleeping inside it.
Descriptions of the suspect vary; police were told he was 30-to-60 years old; that he had white hair or salt-and-pepper hair and that he had a full beard or was clean-shaven; that he wore glasses and that he didn’t wear glasses. The SUV descriptions differ as well.
Neighbors shared an informational email in an effort to inform each other about the incidents, and detectives have investigated all the reports.
Police offer some tips for keeping kids safe:
- Tell your kids to walk with others and stay in well-lit areas
- Always supervise younger children, even in groups
- Tell your kids to never, ever get into a car with a stranger
- Let your child know you will never send an unknown adult to pick them up – ever
- If a stranger does approach your child, your child should RUN, YELL and REPORT the stranger to a trusted adult. It’s not appropriate for adults to approach children.
Here are some ploys strangers may use:
- Asks for help finding a lost pet
- Invites the child to a car to see a new puppy
- Offers candy, toys or food
- Asks for directions
- Offers a ride
Police remind people to call 9-1-1 if they are in a situation which they feel is unsafe, or if they notice a situation involving someone else.
The Boulder Police Department will keep the public apprised of any developments or public safety issues which arise.

Fresno State replaced with Charleston Southern University

GAME WILL BE PLAYED ON OCTOBER 19
BOULDER — The University of Colorado has secured Charleston Southern University as the opponent to replace the Sept. 14 Fresno State football game which was postponed due to the record rainfall and subsequent flooding in Boulder, CU athletic director Rick George announced Monday.
The game has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19; the kickoff time will be determined once the Pac-12 Conference sets the television schedule for that day next Monday.
CU and Fresno State officials couldn’t come up with a workable scenario to make up the game this season and will discuss future options; the series is a “two-for-one” (two in Boulder, one in Fresno) as the Buffaloes played on the road at Fresno last year and the two are scheduled to meet in Boulder on Sept. 14, 2019.

“The Fresno State athletic department leadership, their president and their fans have all been very supportive and cooperative in our efforts to reschedule this contest,” George said. “We are also most appreciative of Fresno State’s student-athletes collecting donations to aid those victims of the flood.”
Over the last two weeks, George and CU officials contacted nearly three dozen schools on both the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) levels, exploring all options available to find an opponent, preferably for Oct. 19, which was the second open date on CU’s 2013 schedule. The only other possible date would have been the first Friday or Saturday in December, but those were fraught with complications.
Last Friday, Colorado received a waiver from the NCAA for it to be bowl eligible if it gets to six wins this season but if two were to come against FCS teams. Under the current rules, schools are allowed one win over an FCS opponent to count toward the minimum six required for postseason eligibility; the Buffaloes already had played an FCS school, Central Arkansas, winning that game 38-24 back on Sept. 7.
Fans can use the tickets and parking passes dated Sept. 14 with Fresno State for admission to the game; if ticket holders are unable to attend the make-up game on Oct. 19, they can make an exchange for any of CU’s other four home games (Oregon, Arizona, California or Southern California). Those doing so would be on a value for value, best available seating basis which would need to be done before the final home game against USC on Nov. 23.

Charleston Southern (which also goes by CSU) is a member of the Big South Conference and is currently 5-0 on the season; the Buccaneers are ranked just outside the Top 25 in the FCS. To date, they have played and won four games on the road (at The Citadel, Campbell, Norfolk State and Appalachian State) with a win over Shorter at home. They also received a waiver from the NCAA, one that allowed them to play a 13th game, eight of which will be away from Charleston.
“We really appreciate (CSU athletic director) Hank Small and Charleston Southern working with us to schedule this game and we look forward to hosting the Buccaneers on October 19,” George said.
The Buccaneers will be the first school from South Carolina to play a football game in Boulder; CU has played Clemson twice, both in bowl games, and has never faced the University of South Carolina or other FCS schools who have traditionally played schools one division higher, including Coastal Carolina, Furman, Presbyterian or the Citadel.
There are five Pac-12 conference games on Oct. 19, along with one non-league affair, USC playing at Notre Dame; the conference and its television partners make their selections Monday mornings, so the game time will be known on Oct. 7
