Four Boulder County homes win $10,000 second-prize Home Energy Makeovers
Oct 30th
Grand Prize winner to be announced later this week
Boulder County, Colo. – Four lucky Boulder County homeowners received a pleasant surprise today when EnergySmart staffers showed up to award them with $10,000 worth of home energy upgrades.
The four homes announced today won equal second-place prizes in EnergySmart’s Home Energy Makeover contest. The prizes include a new energy efficient furnace, home air sealing and insulation upgrades, and $1,500 to use toward a recommended energy upgrade of the homeowner’s choice. Each winning home was randomly selected from all entries of homes needing these upgrades.
Second-Prize Winners
- Cara Owen, Longmont
- The Owens’ master bedroom was scorching in the summer and frigid in the winter. They bought a space heater and didn’t realize until EnergySmart came in that insulation and air sealing could fix the temperature by using less energy instead of more. They want to leave their home in better condition than when they bought it, so someday another family can be happy there.
- Matt and Katie Birkholz, Boulder
- The Birkholz family recently moved into their home to be close to the kids’ school. They bike every day and try to be sustainable, but their home is pretty leaky and uses an old heating system. They’re looking forward to being more environmentally friendly and much cozier after these new upgrades.
- LaToya Braun, Louisville
- When she was shopping for her family house, LaToya loved the neighborhood so much that she didn’t realize how inefficient the house was. The original coal-burning furnace was converted to natural gas, and the original windows add charm, but not much warmth. She’s excited to be staying a lot warmer this winter!
- Wendy Wyss, Unincorporated Boulder County
- The Wyss family wanted to invest in long-term value, and put solar panels on their home shortly after moving in. When they got an energy assessment from EnergySmart, they were surprised at how leaky the house was, especially around the kitchen can lights. They’re looking forward to tightening up the house and reducing their wasted energy.
The Home Energy Makeover grand prize, valued at approximately $20,000, will be announced later this week. The Grand Prize package includes a new energy efficient furnace, air sealing and insulation upgrades to the attic and crawlspace/basement, an energy efficient water heater, cooling system upgrades, and $4,000 to use for recommended energy upgrades of the homeowner’s choosing.
Contest prizes were largely donated by local contractors:
- Insulation/air sealing: EcoHandyman, ThermalCraft Insulation, EcoSmart Homes, ERC Insulation.
- Furnace installations: Service Experts, SAC Mechanical
- Grand Prize package: Solar City

Shock! get ready Boulder. ROMNEY predicted to win
Oct 26th
Not only has the University of Colorado twice predicted Romney would win the presidential election, but today’s national polls show Romney ahead by 3 points.
“The latest presidential polls indicate that Romney is leading Obama nationwide, 50% to 47%. That is the consensus between Rasmussen, Gallop, and ABC News. ” according to gather. Add Politico and AP says Real Clear Politics. Finally the Washington Post shows Romney inching ahead over 50% and gaining ground daily with women voters.
Where did Obama lose the election? He lost it in the first debate and never recovered. Obama looked burned out and tired and all done right there. The situation in Libya did not help. It looks like his entire administration lied to cover up it’s incompetence to protect the ambassador. Those failed Solar companies the government invested in didn’t help. Obama’s perceived anti business approach hasn’t helped.
Romney seems to have convinced the American people and especially Coloradoans that he will repeat what he did as Governor of Massachusetts. Romney has moved his campaign to the left in recent days.
As each day goes by it only gets worse for Obama. The hope and change message he brought in 2008 has now gone to Romney with his new slogan Big Change. The energy of the Romney campaign has begun to sweep the country. His Red Rocks show dwarfed Obamas rainy city park appearance.
Hillary Clinton resigned as secretary of state this week. That is not a good sign. She could have waited til after the election. Seems she knows it is all over. She is being blamed for the cover up in Libya.
Finally, Americas youth have turned on Obama and have switched sides to Romney. They just like him better. Romney s likability factor has shot up. He smiles a lot seems very nice, knowledgeable and trust worthy. He is also good looking. He looks fresh and alive compared to Barrack Obama who looks tired and worn out.
Obamas mistake was to not rest up and prepare for the campaign season. So steel yourself Boulder. Get ready for Mitt Romney.
Here comes the snow City of Boulder warning
Oct 24th
City prepares for snowfall and reminds people to remove snow from sidewalks
Current weather forecasts indicate that an incoming storm may produce accumulated snow in Boulder beginning the night of Wednesday, Oct. 24, and continuing through Thursday, Oct. 25. The City of Boulder is preparing snow response crews in advance. Community members are asked to be mindful of the conditions, to prepare their vehicles as appropriate and to plan for extended commute times.
Snow Removal on City Streets
The city’s Public Works Department has snow crews on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to changing weather conditions. During snowstorms, 16 plow trucks are active on Boulder’s streets. Six of the trucks distribute a liquid deicer, four spreader trucks distribute traction materials, and six trucks can distribute either material. Fifteen of the plow trucks drive predetermined routes while one “floater” truck responds to problem areas.
During the snowstorm, the city may spot-treat bridges and overpasses as needed to help reduce the buildup of ice and snow. Depending on the weather conditions, a liquid deicer may also be applied to streets and multi-use paths to continue melting the snowpack throughout the snowstorm. Spreader trucks will dispense a crystallized deicer for traction, where appropriate.
consistent with other Front Range communities, the city does not plow all residential streets since Boulder’s sunny climate typically melts most snow within a day or two and because residential plowing would increase costs by an estimated 200 percent. Plowing residential streets would also block driveways and cars parked on the streets. However, problem areas like particularly icy slopes, blocked storm drains or impassable sidewalks can be reported to the city for response. To report roadway or path problems, call the Street and Bikeway Maintenance Hotline at 303-413-7177.
Sidewalk Snow Removal
The Boulder Police Department is responsible for enforcing the city’s sidewalk snow removal ordinance. Property owners, tenants and landlords must clear their sidewalks within 24 hours after snow stops falling. Official snowfall reports are available on the National Weather Service website. Failure to remove snow from sidewalks before the 24-hour deadline may result in a summons and/or an abatement process. Abatement includes the use of a private snow removal contractor to clear the sidewalk. The property owner will be charged a $50 administrative fee, along with the contractor’s fee for removing the snow. To report a sidewalk snow violation, call Code Enforcement at 303-441-3333. Snow should be shoveled onto landscaping, not into the streets. Pushing snow into the streets creates hazards for bike commuters and pedestrians, and gutters clogged with snow may cause ice to form on the sidewalks.
The ICEBUSTERS program pairs residents who are physically unable to clear snow from their sidewalks with someone who can do the work for them. Seasonal and substitute volunteers are needed for this community program. To volunteer or learn more, please call 303-443-1933.
