Seasonal raptor closures to begin Feb.1

The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department will institute seasonal closures to protect area raptors on Saturday, Feb. 1. The closures – which protect peregrine falcons, prairie falcons and golden eagles raising their young in nests located along Boulder’s mountain backdrop – will be in effect from Feb. 1 until July 31. Closures may be lifted sooner if monitoring indicates that raptors are not present.
High-quality habitat and rich food resources make cliffs on OSMP lands a regionally important area for nesting birds of prey. The following areas and formations will be closed:
- Lefthand Canyon Palisades, at the intersection of Lefthand Canyon Drive and Olde Stage Road (Buckingham picnic area remains open);
- Mount Sanitas, First Buttress, accessible from the Mount Sanitas trailhead, a half mile west of Fourth Street and Mapleton Avenue (no closures to the bouldering areas along the ridge; Mount Sanitas trail will remain open);
- Third Flatiron, including the East and West Ironing Boards, Queen Anne’s Head and Jaws, and WC Pinnacle, accessible from Chautauqua trailhead;
- Flagstaff Mountain: the north side of Flagstaff Mountain will be closed (the Boy Scout Trail will remain open);
- Skunk Canyon, including Ridges 2, 3 and 4, the Aechean Pronouncement, the Dreadnaught, the North Ridge and the entirety of Sacred Cliffs, accessible from NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
- The Back Porch and The Box, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
- Bear Creek Spire, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
- Fern Canyon, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road¡¡ (the designated Fern Canyon hiking trail will remain open);
- Shadow Canyon and the Matron, accessible from the South Mesa Trailhead (the Maiden will remain open and accessible from the east; Shadow Canyon Trail will remain open).
- The Sphinx and The Wings, accessible from the NCAR trailhead at the west end of Table Mesa Road;
- The entire Mickey Mouse wall, accessible from the Goshawk Ridge Trail.
Boulder-area volunteers and staff have been monitoring important raptor nesting and resting areas on OSMP lands since 1984. They are an integral part of efforts to protect the species and adaptively manage the closures.

Trespassing into closed areas can result in a summons with penalties up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.¡¡ OSMP relies heavily on the public to respect the closures, and the cooperation of visitors to these areas is greatly appreciated.

Police need help in locating hit and run suspect

Boulder police are looking for anyone who has information on a hit and run accident that occurred on Sunday, January 26 at approximately 6:25 p.m. on South Broadway and Grinnell Street.
The vehicle is described as a dark green Ford Ranger truck with gold colored side view mirrors and “spinners” on the hubcaps. The truck was traveling northbound and struck a female crossing the road at that location. She sustained fractures to her lower leg. Pieces of the passenger’s side view mirror were located at the scene.
Anyone who was in the area at that time or has knowledge of the accident is urged to call Sgt. Lauri Wegscheider at 303-441-4047.

tax preparation assistance
tax preparation assistance
Students from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business will offer free tax preparation services to individuals under the Internal Revenue Service-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
Members of the public who make $52,000 or less are eligible for the service, now in its fifth year at the Leeds School.
The assistance will be available only on a walk-in basis Feb. 1 through April 5 on Wednesdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Koelbel Business Building, room 375. The building is located at 995 Regent Drive on the CU-Boulder campus, across from the Coors Events Center. Free parking is available after 5 p.m. and during the weekends at lot 436/494, located on Regent Drive north of the Coors Events Center and east of the Koelbel Business Building.
“Not only do student volunteers perform a much needed community service, but their work also is well received by potential employers,” said Susan Morley, senior instructor of accounting at the Leeds School.
Participating Leeds students have passed an IRS certification exam. Community volunteers who are experienced in tax law will review all student-prepared tax returns to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Last year, Leeds School students prepared approximately 380 tax returns and obtained more than $518,000 in refunds for taxpayers. The students also placed an extra $152,000 into the local economy through Earned Income Tax Credits for families.
Taxpayers who are eligible for the assistance should bring the following:
— Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Notices/Cards for the taxpayer, the taxpayer’s spouse and dependents.
— Photo identification for the taxpayer and the taxpayer’s spouse if married and filing jointly. Both spouses must be present.
— All W-2 and 1099 forms and other income-related documents.
— Proof of mortgage interest, property taxes, daycare expenses (including provider’s tax ID number), college education expenses (e.g., 1098-T form) and all other applicable deductible expenses.
— A copy of last year’s federal tax return.
— Proof of account for direct deposit of refund (e.g., voided check).
— Proof of foreign status if applying for ITIN.
