Tree removal work on Pearl Street Mall has begun
The City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department has begun a tree removal and replacement project on the 1300 block of the Pearl Street Mall.
The project will include removing declining linden trees and tree grates, realigning tree vaults, enlarging tree grates and planting new trees. This work may cause brief, minor access closures. The project is expected to be completed by April 15 (depending on weather and contactor scheduling). There are no anticipated business access impacts due to this work.

Boulder Municipal Court will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 8, for a staff meeting.
Fourmile Canyon Fire aerial mulching to begin Thursday, April 7 (weather permitting)

Boulder County, Colo. – With increased potential for flooding, debris flows and weed invasion in the Fourmile Canyon Fire area due to loss of vegetation and bare slopes, the Boulder County Fire Rehabilitation Implementation Team is conducting a series of treatments aimed at reducing erosion and weeds in the areas hardest hit by the fire that burned more than 6,000 acres and destroyed 169 homes last September.
Aerial mulching treatments will consist of certified weed-free straw and WoodStrawÓ being dropped in pre-determined areas from helicopters. Target areas were determined by a set of criteria that includes slope, burn severity, flood/debris flow risk, and values downstream (including human life, safety and property). In total, approximately 1,960 acres will be aerially mulched inside the fire boundary.
Aerial operations will begin on April 7 (weather permitting) in the vicinity of Sugarloaf Road and Fourmile Canyon Drive and move to areas within Sunshine Canyon on or after April 12. Flights will operate for about two weeks (up until April 23) depending on weather conditions throughout the mulching period.
Helicopters will be flying during daylight hours only beginning as early as 7 a.m., and residents can expect temporary road closures as helicopters fly overhead. Additionally, heavy truck equipment will be used in the vicinity of Sugarloaf Road and Sunshine Canyon to deliver straw and support equipment for the aerial flights.
Hand seeding is taking place along roads and driveways in areas that were moderately to severely burned, and with less than 60 percent slope. Roads and driveways are targeted because vehicles are a common way that weed seeds are transported. In total, approximately 500 acres will be seeded utilizing the help of volunteers.
Call the Fourmile Rehabilitation Hotline at 303-413-7010 for the latest updates on seeding and aerial mulching activities. Message boards or flaggers will be located in the vicinity of work being performed to alert residents of any delays or modifications to traffic patterns.
Safety issues
Due to safety regulations and FAA requirements, no one can be in the immediate areas where mulch is being dropped.
Residents and workers in the mulching areas for Gold Hill, Four Mile Canyon, Sugar Loaf and Sunshine Canyon will be asked to leave the area for the day, and bring in pets/livestock while their specific block or neighborhood is being mulched.
Boulder County Sheriff’s patrols will be active in the area to maintain public safety for the duration of the treatments. The Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to be mindful of the following privacy and public safety rules:
- Motorists must not block traffic on any public right of way.
- Everyone must stay at least 200 feet outside of the perimeter of active aerial mulching treatment areas at all times so as not to impede operations.
- No trespassing is allowed on private property including driveways, turn-offs, private roads or other private property.
- Cyclists are asked to avoid Sugarloaf Road, Fourmile Canyon Drive, and Sunshine Canyon Drive while helicopter flights are occurring (April 7-23).

BRIDGE GIRDER INSTALLATION TO CLOSE US 36 NEAR 80TH AVENUE NEXT WEEK
WESTMINSTER– Next week, March 14th through March 17th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will install bridge girders for the new 80th Avenue bridge over US 36. The work will require a full closure of eastbound and westbound US 36 for four nights, weather permitting.
“Over the last several months, we have been constructing the bridge substructure and completing some work on 80th Avenue,” said CDOT Project Engineer Jason Lucerna. “With this work nearly complete, we can begin the construction of the bridge deck by installing girders. The girder installation will soon be followed by a bridge deck pour as well as other overhead work that will require additional full closures of US 36.”
To complete the girder installation, the following closures will be in place each night, weather permitting:
Westbound US 36 near 80th Avenue: One lane of westbound US 36 near 80th Avenue will be closed each night starting at 8 p.m. with all lanes closing at 10 p.m. All lanes of westbound US 36 will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the following day.
Eastbound US 36 near 80th Avenue: One lane of eastbound US 36 near 80th Avenue will be closed each night starting at 9 p.m. with all lanes closing at 10 p.m. All lanes of eastbound US 36 will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day.
During the closure, motorists on westbound US 36 can exit at Federal Boulevard and take 72nd Avenue or 92nd Avenue to Sheridan Boulevard. Motorists on eastbound US 36 can exit at Sheridan Boulevard and take 72nd Avenue or 92nd Avenue to Federal Boulevard.
Motorists are also reminded that 80th Avenue over US 36 is closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic until approximately May 2011. The detour route for 80th Avenue will also utilize 72nd Avenue or 92nd Avenue to Sheridan Boulevard or Federal Boulevard.
CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.
The girder installation is part of a project that replaces the 80th Avenue bridge over US 36. The bridge was originally constructed in 1951 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges. When complete, the new bridge will be wider to accommodate an additional left turn lane from 80th Avenue to Oakwood Drive and a wider sidewalk. The new bridge will also have greater vertical clearance and will be longer to accommodate the future widening of US 36.
Structures, Inc. is the contractor for this $7 million project being funded by CDOT and the City of Westminster. 80th Avenue is expected to reopen around May 2011 and the entire project will be complete by the end of August 2011.
