Boulder police: Serial bike theft suspect arrested
Mar 10th
Boulder Police detectives have been investigating a series of thefts of high-end bicycles from the downtown area and today, March 10, 2014, formally arrested the suspect, John William Samson III (DOB 10/04/1975). Samson was arrested at the Boulder County Jail, where he has been incarcerated on separate charges.
Samson faces 34 counts of Theft, one count of Third Degree Burglary, one count of Criminal Trespass and one count of Criminal Mischief. Twenty-nine of the charges are felonies.
Investigators believe Samson is responsible for the thefts of 43 bicycles from May 2013 until September 2013. The bikes are worth a total of approximately $147,000.00. The bicycles range in price from $700.00 to $9,000.00 each.
The majority of the thefts took place in the downtown business area during daylight hours. Most of the bikes were locked, either to bike racks or on vehicle racks. None of the stolen bikes have been recovered, and they have not shown up in area pawn shops.
Several bicycles were stolen from the campus of Boulder High School, including five bikes belonging to the Boulder High School’s mountain bike team. Those bicycles had been stored in a locked trailer and were taken during the Boulder flood.
Victims include local residents, people travelling through Colorado on vacation and at least one victim who had driven to Boulder for a bike competition, only to find his bicycle stolen the day before he was to compete. Victims are juveniles, students, professionals, a professor and an out-of-state fire fighter.
Brands of the stolen bikes include: Yeti, Santa Cruz, Transition, Titus, Felt, Scott, Specialized, Kona, Gary Fisher, Trek and Klein.
Samson is currently in jail, and his bond has been set at $100,000.00. Detectives are continuing to investigate.
The Boulder Police Department has been working in partnership with the Colorado Department of Corrections, which provided critical information and timely assistance during our investigation.
Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to contact Detective Craig Beckjord at 303-441-3336. Shop downtown and get free parking–maybe
Nov 26th
City of Boulder parking services will roll out several parking promotions for the holiday season to encourage shoppers to shop downtown.
Beginning Friday, Nov. 29 and running through Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, parking enforcement officers will surprise shoppers each day by randomly handing out coupons for “three hours FREE parking” at downtown pay station parking. Parking enforcement officers will look for customers who are en route to a pay station and have not yet paid, and give them a coupon. The randomly chosen customers will place the coupon on their dash, just like a pay station receipt. The offer will be valid only for the day the customer receives the coupon.
Additionally, the city will provide downtown merchants with 30,000 one-hour free parking coupons, valid from Friday, Nov. 29 until Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. These coupons will be honored at the St Julien and the 15th/Pearl garages only
Twenty-two thousand Boulder water utility bills sent out in November contained a flyer highlighting holiday events and a coupon for one-hour free at the 15th/Pearl and St Julien garages only. Downtown Boulder, Inc. also sent out 12,000 mailers that highlighted holiday events in Downtown Boulder and included a one-hour free parking coupon for 15th/Pearl garage only.
For more information, contact Donna Jobert, Downtown and University Hill Management Division/Parking Services of the City of Boulder at 303-413-7313 or jobertd@bouldercolorado.gov.

Arapahoe Avenue closed between 15th and 17th streets on Saturday
Aug 9th
Eastbound Arapahoe Avenue between 17th and Folsom streets will remain open, businesses along Arapahoe Avenue will remain open, and the Boulder Farmers’ Market will remain at its current location. Travelers are encouraged to walk or bike along the Boulder Creek Path, ride buses, or use Canyon Boulevard and the downtown parking garages if driving.
The one-day full closure between 15th and 17th streets is a final step in the first phase of the Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction project. During phase two of the reconstruction, Arapahoe Avenue will have intermittent daytime lane closures; travel in both directions will remain open throughout. The JUMP bus will remain on Arapahoe Avenue, but there may be temporary bus stop closures. Phase two includes irrigation relocation and construction of curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks.
