IBM to report on Smarter Cities Challenge Grant

IBM experts will share SmartGridCity recommendations May 27 IBM will present its recommendations about the capabilities and potential benefits of Xcel Energy’s SmartGridCity at a public meeting at: St. Julien Hotel 900 Walnut St. Friday, May 27 8 to 10 a.m. The presentation is part of IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge grant in which Boulder was one of 24 cities to be selected in 2011. The grant provided six senior IBM executives to study the SmartGridCity and provide recommendations to help meet Boulder’s long-term energy goals. Smarter Cities Challenge is sponsored by the international philanthropic foundation at IBM, which has been a leader in corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship for 100 years. OSMP offers a volunteer project in celebration of National Trails Day!

The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) department is recruiting volunteers for a trail building project on National Trails Day, Saturday June 4, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
This effort will assist in re-routing a section of Green Bear Trail. Volunteers will clear the trail corridor, haul slash and generally work toward establishing new tread. The re-route will move a portion of the trail out of the Bear Canyon riparian area. This, combined with previous trail projects, will help improve the entire length of the riparian area in Bear Canyon. Riparian areas provide essential habitat for a long list of plant and animal species and are some of the most biologically rich areas on the OSMP system.
A portion of the re-route will move the trail out of Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse habitat. This federally listed species requires riparian shrubland habitat, like those found in Bear Canyon, for feeding, breeding, and hibernation. The new trail alignment will also be more sustainable, resulting in a reduction of trail erosion that can both degrade water quality in the creek and impact native vegetation.
Volunteers should dress in layers and bring appropriate clothing for rain and full-sun exposure. Work gloves, sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, a long sleeved T-shirt, a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen and a hat are also necessary to participate. Tools and lunch will be provided. In addition, each volunteer will receive a custom-made project tee-shirt.

These will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Designated parking will be at New Vista High School parking lot at 700 20th St. Volunteers will be shuttled to the project site.
Boulder Police investigate attempted child abduction: Sketch

Police release sketch of suspect in attempted child abduction
After numerous witness interviews with adults and children, Boulder police have revised the suspect description from the reported attempted child abduction incident that happened earlier this week near 9th Street and Mapleton. Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on May 23, three elementary school aged boys were getting off a school bus and were approached by a black male who asked them to go to Denver with him. The boys said the man grabbed one of them by the arm, but the boy was able to free himself and the boys ran away.
Initially it was reported that the male had shoulder-length dreadlocks. After further investigation, detectives have determined that the man has close-cut dark hair, not dreadlocks. The attached sketch has been confirmed by two adult witnesses.
The man was wearing a yellow/blue/gray striped shirt, black pants and black athletic shoes. Updated vehicle information indicates that the suspect may be driving a green Jeep with a black top.
On Monday, May 23, at approximately 3:10 p.m., as three elementary school aged boys were getting off their school bus in the area of 9th Street and Mapleton Avenue, they were approached by a suspicious black male. The male began walking behind them andattempted to engage the boys in conversation. The boys ignored the male and continued walking southbound on 9th Street. The male persisted in engaging the boys in conversation and tried to entice them to go with him to Denver by asking them to have a cheeseburger with him. At one point, the male grabbed one of the boys by his arm. The boy was able to struggle free and the boys ran to 9th and Pearl streets. They looked back and noticed the male had entered a green Jeep with a brown top. The Jeep is possibly a Wrangler.
None of the boys was hurt during this incident.
The suspect is described as a black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks. He was wearing a yellow/blue/gray striped shirt, black pants and dirty, black shoes. The male spoke with some type of accent.
Boulder police have notified the Boulder Valley School District officials and security. In addition, the police will be providing extra patrols at the schools and the surrounding areas.
Investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect and/or his vehicle.
