CU women’s tennis gets an historical win
Mar 29th
“I’m really proud of the players,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “We came out and competed. It’s been a tough couple of weeks of competition that we’ve had, playing the top four schools in our conference, who were really, really tough. I think we all learned from that, and it really helped us today. I think they really bounced back well. We’ve got three more teams coming into town over the next couple of weeks and we look forward to having those teams here.”
The Buffaloes pick up their first win over a ranked opponent since taking down No. 62 Stephen F. Austin 6-1 on February 2. This marks the highest ranked opponent the Buffs have defeated since beating then-ranked No. 46 New Mexico on February 7, 2009. All nine of CU’s most recent opponents have either been ranked, had at least one ranked player or both (as is the case for six of the teams, including Oregon). The Buffs are now 2-6 against ranked opponents this season, and an impressive 5-2 at home, opening home outdoor play against the Ducks.
“It means something when players don’t necessarily play their best and still win and find a way,” Kenneally said. “I think we did that in several positions today in singles and doubles. That’s what I’m most proud of because it just shows that mentally they’ve taken a step forward, which is great.”
Colorado improves to 7-11 overall, 2-5 Pac-12, matching last year’s overall win total, and marking the first time since the 2009-10 season that the Buffs won at least two conference matches. Oregon, having been ranked in the ITA top-75 in all but two matches this spring, falls to 11-5, 1-4 Pac-12. CU leads the overall series 10-6.
The Buffs sprang into action early, taking the doubles point. The freshman duo of Dhany Quevedo and Mazy Watrous got its first ever win as a pair, besting Hughes/Hager 8-1. Juniors Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio continue to be a power for the Buffs, earning their 10th win together this season with an 8-5 win over Metzger/Neubert.
After facing seven straight ranked opponents, Julyette Steur claimed a win over the eighth, defeating No. 102 Nicole Long, who has lost only twice this spring, 6-1, 6-1 for her 14th win of the season. All but one of her wins this spring have been in straight sets. The victory was Steur’s first over a ranked opponent since she beat then-ranked No. 104 McCall Jones of UCLA on March 23, 2012.
Janssens and Manzi Tenorio each earned their 40th career singles win with victories in straight sets. Janssens bested Patricia Skowronski 6-1, 6-3. Janssens leads the Buffs with 16 wins this season, including four in-conference. Manzi Tenorio got her 14th win of the season and her second over a conference opponent with a solid 6-4, 7-6 win over Lana Buttner.
Senior Erin Sanders once again clinched the match for the Buffs, defeating Pascale Neubert 6-3, 6-3. Sanders now has seven wins this season, including two major conference victories.
The Buffs return to action next weekend as the season draws to a close. CU takes on Washington State at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5 and Washington at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 7.

Buffs Lose Tight 4-2 Battle At San Francisco
Mar 26th
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of Colorado tennis team concluded a five-match road trip on Monday with a hard fought 4-2 loss to San Francisco.
“Today we came out and battled,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Congrats to San Francisco, they were great. We battled, but we just weren’t quite as sharp as we’d liked to have been. We look forward to our home matches to end the season.”
Colorado and San Francisco split their all-time series 1-1, competing for the first time since the Buffs’ 7-0 blanking in 2007.
CU concludes its non-conference play with a 5-6 record, falling to 6-11 overall and holding a 1-5 record in the Pac-12 Conference. USF extends its winning streak to four to complete its 11-match home stand. With Monday’s win, the Dons become the first team in West Coast Conference with wins in the double digits.
The Buffs came out strong, claiming a doubles win for the first time since their 4-2 victory over Arizona on March 10. Juylette Steur and Erin Sanders breezed past Ka/Holmberg 8-2 for their seventh win of the season. In their first time competing as a pair, Winde Janssens and Dhany Quevedo battled, but fell 9-7 to Hashiguchi/Hadzi-Tanovic in the No. 2 doubles position.
CU continued to face stiff competition in singles play. All eight of CU’s most recent opponents have either been ranked, had at least one ranked player or both (as is the case for five of the teams). The Dons continued this streak, with Julyette Steur looking for her first win against a ranked player this season, after taking on her seventh straight ranked player in No. 76 Andrea Ka.
Junior Winde Janssens claimed her team-best 15th win of the season, moving to an impressive 12-5 record in dual play. Janssens defeated Sofia Holmberg 6-0, 6-0 for her second perfect match of the season (her first was over Northern Colorado’sStephanie Catlin on February 1).
Freshman Mazy Watrous also had a great showing, earning the third win of her career with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Brooke Irish. This was Watrous’ second win in straight sets.
The Buffs return to Boulder to round out the remainder of the regular season. CU begins the four-match home stand against Oregon. First serve is at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 29. Location is determinant on weather; stay tuned to CUBuffs.com for updates.

An epic victory for Buff women’s tennis
Mar 11th
The last time the Buffs beat a conference opponent in the regular season was on April 11, 2010, when they defeated Kansas on their home turf. After 26 matches, the Buffs have finally ended the streak.
CU redeems itself after a 7-0 loss to Arizona in Tucson last season. The Buffs have now won three of the teams’ last four matches. Colorado improves to 6-6 overall, 1-1 Pac-12. After defeating three ranked teams this season, including then-ranked No. 41 Minnesota, Arizona slips to 8-7, 0-2.
“It feels really, really great,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “The players have done a terrific job overall, and they really deserve this win. I think it’s a great day. One through six singles and one through three doubles had great efforts. It’s the Pac-12, the best women’s tennis conference in the country, with more national titles than any other conference. It’s one of those things where you really have to come to compete to win matches. Today we came to compete. This team, as I’ve said after previous matches, continues to improve and get better every match. Today was an example of that improvement. We’ve come a long way since the first match this year. I’m excited for the girls. They worked hard and they deserve it.”
For the seventh time this season, the Buffs jumped out to an early lead after claiming the doubles point. Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders got the ball rolling with an 8-4 victory over Smyth/Stubbe for their sixth win of the season. Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio continue to lead the Buffs with dynamic performances in the No. 2 doubles position. The tandem has fallen just twice this season, raking in their ninth win after edging Austin/Hendrikx 9-8 (4).
Winde Janssens has been pushed to three sets in her last three matches, and for the second time in as many matches, she came from behind to claim a victory. As she did on Friday against No. 111 Desirae Krawczyk of Arizona State, Janssens dropped her first set, won the second 6-0 and clinched the win in the third. Janssens handed Kim Stubbe just her fourth loss of the season. After falling 2-6 in the first set, Janssens won eight straight games in the final two sets, pulling away 6-4 in the final set. Janssens earns her 13th win of the season (losing just twice this spring), and her team-high seventh come-from-behind win.
Carla Manzi Tenorio also earned her 13th win of the season, and 39th of her career, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Shayne Austin. All but two of Manzi Tenorio’s victories this season have been in straight sets.
Erin Sanders proved she wants her final season as the Buff to be a memorable one, clinching her team’s first ever Pac-12 win with a three set victory over Akilah James.
“I think it’s really exciting, just because it’s the Pac-12, we haven’t had a Pac-12 win yet,” Sanders said after her match. “You want to go out with a bang and remember your last season, so it was quite a relief.”
Sanders was down 2-3 in the first set when she surged back to win 6-3. Sanders lost a second set battle 3-6, but jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third. James responded with a three game run of her own to tie things up, but Sanders refused to lose, claiming the win 6-4 in the final set.
“I think for me and everybody else, it kind of just shows that we have lots of opportunities and we’re here in the Pac-12, and it doesn’t matter what the number is in front of the team we’re playing, we have a shot,” Sanders said. “We did it today and we can do it in our next match.”
The Buffs hit the road for a five-match trip, where they’ll take on four Pac-12 rivals and their final non-conference opponent. The trip begins with a visit to Los Angeles as the Buffs take on USC at 2:30 p.m. (MDT) on Friday, March 15 and UCLA at 2 p.m. (MDT) on Saturday, March 16.
