Improvements to 15th Street (Arapahoe to Canyon) scheduled to begin next week

Beginning the week of Monday, Aug. 26, the City of Boulder will be improving the streetscape on 15th Street between Arapahoe Avenue and Canyon Boulevard. During the three-month construction, there will be daytime parking restrictions and sidewalk closures, with a sidewalk along one side of the street kept open at all times. Fifteenth Street will remain open to vehicular traffic and access to businesses along 15th Street will be maintained throughout construction.
The city will be adding new, wider sidewalks, trees and grates, an irrigation system, bike racks, recycling and trash receptacles, poles for “15th Street Design District” banners, and new light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights that the city will own and operate.
The city is also collaborating with Boulder High School students to create public art for the new 15th Street design. The student-inspired art includes a creative metal railing and sidewalk prints that gradually transition from human footprints to panther paw prints between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue. The foot and paw prints will be sandblasted and painted into the 15th Street sidewalks, along with design-related quotes.
“Fifteenth Street is an important corridor for Boulder businesses, students, residents and visitors,” said Executive Director of Downtown, University Hill and Parking Services Molly Winter. “The streetscape improvements will enhance the vibrant culture and unique character of the 15th Street Design District.”
The 15th Street (Arapahoe to Canyon) Streetscape Improvements are funded by the 2011 voter-approved Capital Improvement Bond. CU Soccer Set To Open 2013 Season With Colorado Cup

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women’s soccer team opens the regular season this Friday at the 2013 Colorado Cup. The Buffs have won the Colorado Cup the past two seasons and are looking to continue the trend.
“We want to win again,” said junior midfielder Darcy Jerman. “We’ve won the past two years and we want to keep that going. That will set us up for the rest of the season and give us some good momentum.”

Senior goalkeeper and team captain Annie Brunner says that the team expects to start the ’13 season with a Cup victory.
“Our expectations are always to win the Colorado Cup,” said Brunner. “That’s a key to starting off the season right. As long as the Cup is around, it’s our goal to win it.”
Second-year head coach Danny Sanchez is excited to kick off the 2013 season this weekend and looks forward to the competition.
“These are state rivals,” said Sanchez. “We don’t expect anything different this year. Playing UNC on Friday night at DU, we know that’s going to be a tough game. Colorado College made the NCAA tournament last year and they have been picked in the preseason to ultimately win Conference USA, which is a very good conference. We know that this year’s Colorado Cup is going to be a challenge but we’re really looking forward to it.”
The Buffs take on Northern Colorado on Friday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. The team will then take on Colorado College at 2:30 p.m. at Prentup Field in Boulder on Sunday.
Looking ahead to the regular season, Sanchez has several goals for his team, with Pac-12 play beginning on Sept. 28 against Stanford.
“We’d like to move up in the Pac-12 standings and then ultimately compete for the NCAA tournament,” said Sanchez. “We feel that we can do that. If we can move up in the standings, we can hopefully put ourselves in the position once we get into conference play to make a run at it.”
In 2012, Colorado went 2-7-2 in the Pac-12 (8-8-4 overall).

Sagan takes Pro Challenge stage 3 race but Morton still leading all racers

After tackling the 105.9-mile route from Breckenridge to Steamboat Springs, 2013 Tour de France Sprint Jersey Winner Peter Sagan claimed Stage 3 of the USA Pro Challenge. Lachlan David Morton held onto the Leader Jersey and will wear it during tomorrow’s challenging stage from Steamboat Springs to Beaver Creek. See attached and below for full results.
