Kyleesha Weston Leaves Basketball Team, Intends to Transfer

BOULDER — Sophomore guard Kyleesha Weston will not return to the University of Colorado women’s basketball team for personal reasons, head coach Linda Lappe announced on Tuesday.
She has returned to her native Kansas City, Mo., with the hopes of transferring to a school closer to home.
“I wanted to be closer to my family; I felt like I would be happier here (in Kansas City),” Weston said. “I talked (at length) with my family and some of my teammates. This didn’t happen overnight. I had been thinking about it for a while when I made the decision.
“I still care about each one of my teammates and each one of the coaches and hope to keep a great relationship with them. I wish them the best of luck this year and for years to come.”
Weston played in 30 of 32 games as a true freshman in 2012-13, averaging 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds while dishing out 20 assists and logging 15 steals.
She served as a back-up to All-Pac-12 point guard Chucky Jeffery and had some good moments down the stretch of Colorado’s run to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, playing double-digit minutes in six of the final seven games.
Weston averaged five rebounds during the Pac-12 Tournament; grabbing a personal-best six in the quarterfinal win over Washington. She tallied a career-high eight points three times, including league wins over Arizona (home) and Utah (road).
“We enjoyed having ‘Ky’ at CU, but in the end the distance from home was a big factor in her decision,” Lappe said. “We wish her the best of luck in the future.”
A 2012 graduate of Park Hill High School, she was a finalist for the DiRenna Award as a senior, given to the top boys and girls high school basketball players in the Kansas City metro area. She averaged 18 points and nearly five assists per game, earning All-Suburban Big 6 Conference and Kansas City Star All-Metro honors.
Colorado is in the midst of preparing for a summer trip to Italy, Aug. 12-21, where the Buffaloes are scheduled to play four games against Italian opponents. Colorado finished the 2012-13 season at 25-7, fourth in the Pac-12 at 13-5, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in program history and first since 2004.

Murder investigation of CU student, Sid Wells, nears 30 years; suspect remains on the run (or dead)

August 1, 2013 will mark the 30-year anniversary of the shooting death of Sid Wells, a 22-year-old journalism student enrolled at the University of Colorado. The case received prominent media attention because at the time of his death, Wells was dating actor Robert Redford’s daughter, Shauna.

Wells had been shot in the head, and was found dead inside his Spanish Towers condo by his brother on August 1, 1983. Police suspected Wells’ roommate, Thayne Smika, and arrested him a few months after the homicide when investigators linked him to the murder. However, Smika was never prosecuted because the district attorney at the time, Alex Hunter, declined to take the case. Smika left the area and in 1986, his abandoned car was found in Beverly Hills, CA.
In 2011, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office agreed to review the case and approved an arrest affidavit for Smika. Unable to locate Smika, police are again asking for the public’s help finding him. Investigators believe Smika is living under an assumed identity and have contacted Smika’s relatives (several of whom still live in Colorado) in attempts to find out where he is and what identity he has been using. Smika’s relatives have not provided any helpful information to the Boulder Police Department.
Deputy Chief Dave Hayes, who was one of the first detectives to investigate the case in 1983, is hoping that someone can provide information about Smika’s whereabouts. “It’s past time for justice for Sid Wells and his family,” said Hayes. “Thayne Smika escaped a first degree murder charge, and has likely been living a life of freedom while the Wells’ family has been grieving for three decades.”

Investigators are still looking for Thayne Smika and are asking anyone with information about Smika or where he might be living to contact them. Detective Tom Dowd may be reached at 303-441-3385. CU Football Single Game Tickets Go On Sale Tuesday, 9 a.m.

BOULDER – Single game tickets to University of Colorado football games are on sale starting Tuesday, July 30 at 9 a.m.
Fans can purchase online at www.cubuffs.com/tickets, by phone at 303-492-8337, in person at the CU Athletic Ticket Office between gates 4 and 5 of Folsom Field, or at TicketsWest outlets.
The Buffs open the season on Sunday, Sept. 1 in Denver against Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The CSU game marks the debut of CU head coach Mike MacIntyre.

Single game tickets for Folsom Field contests start at just $30 a game. The home opener for Colorado is Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. against the University of Central Arkansas, followed by a September 14 tilt with Fresno State which will kickoff at noon.
Preseason Pac-12 favorite Oregon will headline Family Weekend on Saturday, October 5. That’s followed by a Homecoming date with Arizona and coach Rich Rodriguez three weeks later on October 26.
In November the Buffs will host a pair of games. First the Cal Bears on Saturday the 16th, then the Folsom Field season finale on Saturday the 23rd with the Trojans of USC.
