Finally! A new Boulder Public Library Director named

Maginnis Named Boulder Public Library Director
BOULDER – The City of Boulder today announced Valerie Maginnis will be the new Boulder Public Library director effective June 13, 2011. Maginnis was selected from 78 applicants in a national search. The decision came after public presentations by the finalists and interviews with city staff and members of the Library and the Arts commissions.
“I am honored and excited to have been selected for the position,” said Maginnis. “I am very much looking forward to working with staff, volunteers, and the community to explore ways that the Boulder Public Library can be even more important and relevant to the lives of its current and future patrons.”
Maginnis is currently the director of Library and Cultural Services for the City of Mission Viejo, Calif. She has more than 20 years of experience in city and county libraries. Maginnis holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University and a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona.
“The Boulder Public Library is a centerpiece of the community,” said City Manager Jane Brautigam. “This is a complex organization to lead and requires a dynamic director who can manage the business operations as well as connect with a diverse and passionate community. I believe Boulder has found such a director in Valerie Maginnis.”
Brautigam added that evaluating a national pool of highly qualified candidates was a difficult task, and community input was a significant component of the process.
“Any time an organization conducts an executive search, it is a time-consuming and challenging process,” said Brautigam. “In the case of our library director, the individual must be able to lead a traditional library system as well as manage a performing arts center. I appreciate that so many residents and staff attended the public presentations to provide feedback on the finalists, and I want to thank members of the Library and Arts commissions for participating in the interviews. It was an excellent opportunity for finalists to meet the community and for citizens to provide input.”
Maginnis fills the position vacated on July 9, 2010, by Tony Tallent. She will earn a salary of $128,000 and assumes her role as Boulder Public library director on June 13, 2011.
Artists sought for anniversary sculpture project

Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County is recruiting artists to submit design proposals for an original, permanent, public sculpture to be placed on the Boulder County Courthouse plaza on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.
As one of Colorado’s 17 original Colorado counties, Boulder County is celebrating its 150th anniversary and has commissioned the sculpture to help commemorate the milestone.
Artists must be residents of Boulder County and only original works will be considered. The project budget is limited to $20,000, including design, fabrication, transportation and delivery.
“We encourage artists to submit original proposals that reflect our county and its people and speaks to our residents,” said Carrie Haverfield, the county’s constituent services liaison.

2011 Green Frontier Fest on Sunday, May 1 in Boulder

The City of Boulder’s Local Environmental Action Division (LEAD) is partnering with the ReDirect Guide and the Boulder Green Building Guild (BGBG) to present the 2011 Green Frontier Fest at Boulder’s Central Park, on Sunday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free festival will promote options for healthy and sustainable living.
The Green Frontier Fest will feature BGBG’s annual Green Building Product & Service Fair and is intended to showcase all things “green” in the Boulder valley – from cutting-edge renewable technologies to everyday solutions that can be implemented in the home. The event gives residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy interactive and educational exhibits, sustainable food and drink from vendors, children’s activities, music, entertainment and special presentations by guest speakers.
“We strive to make our community a more sustainable and a healthier place to live, work, and play,” said Kristen Hartel, a LEAD Residential Sustainability Specialist. “LEAD is supportive of the Green Frontier Fest’s vision to showcase environmentally and socially responsible initiatives, products, and choices, as well as promote companies that make up our local economy.”
BGBG’s role in the fair offers attendees face-to-face interaction with architects, builders, solar specialists, heating and cooling experts, energy auditors and other green building service providers.
“The 5th Annual Green Building Product and Service Fair is a must for anyone considering a remodel or new construction project,” said BGBG’s Member & Outreach Manager Meagan Forney. “With so many energy efficiency programs and incentives available today, the time has never been better for homeowners to consider making their home or building more comfortable.”
The Green Frontier Fest was first held in Denver in August 2008, as part of the Democratic National Convention. Since then, ReDirect has been co-producing sustainability-focused events throughout the Front Range.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring together so many great community partners to make this event happen,” said Boulder Area Advocate at ReDirect Guide Lori Powell. “Boulder has such a vibrant community in support of sustainability, and this festival allows us to celebrate that culture while promoting economic growth in this sector.”
