Fourteenth Annual Circle Boulder by Bicycle to be held June 5

The City of Boulder Utilities Division’s will host its 14th Annual Circle Boulder by Bicycle, B-360 or B-180 self-guided ride, on Sunday, June 5, rain or shine. This leisurely, non-competitive ride follows the city’s bikeways beginning and ending at Scott Carpenter Park, 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, and is open to all ages and abilities. The fun, community ride showcases Boulder’s world-class bike path system.
Riders can register for free and start the ride for the 25-mile B-360 between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Those who want to participate in the shorter, 18-mile B-180 can register for free and begin the ride between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Participants who may need extra time for either ride can register at 2:30 p.m.
This year’s route will highlight the newly-completed underpass at 30th Street and two new path connections: on the west side of Foothills Parkway, connecting to the Goose Creek Path, and from 48th Street, connecting to the Boulder Creek Path. Participants will loop around Boulder using a linking network of paths, neighborhood streets and unpaved trails.
A free, post-ride party will take place at Scott Carpenter Park, where the ride began. The free party starts at 5 p.m.
Riders are reminded to carry water and wear appropriate gear, including a helmet. Participants must stay on trails and yield to other users. No dogs are allowed.

Boulder Senior Services Summer 2011 Magazine now available
The Boulder Senior Services Summer 2011 Magazine has been mailed to City of Boulder seniors and can also be picked up at the East Boulder Senior Center, 5660 Sioux Drive, the West Boulder Senior Center, 909 Arapahoe Ave. or viewed online at: www.boulderseniorservices.com.
Registration for summer programs begins on Tuesday, May 17, for Encore members and Thursday, May 19, for all others. Walk-in and phone registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20.
The minimum age for participation in events and classes has been reduced to 55. However, seniors seeking assistance from Senior Resources must be at least 60 for a consultation.
The Senior Resources staff offers individualized consultation and resource referrals. Call to learn about and understand the resources available to adults age 60 and over, as well as their families. Staff can help you clarify needs, understand what your options are, learn how to maneuver the application processes, balance caregiving and develop a plan of action.
New offerings in the magazine include:
- “The Civil War: Causes and Effects,” 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, June 27; free at the East Boulder Senior Center;
- “Cuba Day,” noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, $7 at the East Boulder Senior Center;
- DIA Tour, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, $25 to $32.

Police host bike training
On Wednesday, April 27, the Boulder Police Department hosted a joint-agency training involving mountain bikes. Uniformed officers from six agencies (Boulder Police Department, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, University of Colorado-Boulder Police, City of Lafayette Police, and City of Longmont Police) participated in a comprehensive one-day refresher on basic skills, field maintenance, fundamental bike handling skills, vehicular cycling and patrol tactics.
The participants trained throughout the streets and parks in Boulder. Instructors certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) conducted the training.

Boulder celebrates Colorado Children’s Day

For the fifth straight year, Boulder will host a Colorado Children’s Day festival on Friday, April 29 (rain date is April 30), on the Pearl Street Mall between 13th and 14th streets from noon to 4 p.m. This fun and entertaining event will offer free activities to children through elementary school age provided by children-focused City of Boulder departments and programs, community agencies, nonprofit organizations and local businesses.
Ken Hotaling, Kiwanis of Boulder and co-chair for the Colorado Children’s Day event, stated, “The purpose of this event is to reflect on the value our children bring to our lives and our future, celebrate their accomplishments and nourish them in their quest to learn.”
With more than 30 different organizations planning activities, this year’s festival is expected to top last year’s estimated attendance of 1,200 children and adults.
This event is the result of a joint effort between the City of Boulder Children, Youth and Families Division, Kiwanis Clubs of Boulder, the Boulder Valley School District and media sponsor, the Daily Camera. Children, Youth and Families is a division of the city’s Department of Housing and Human Services.
In order to encourage visitors to Colorado Children’s Day to leave their cars at home, Go Boulder and Special Transit are offering families free rides to and from the event on the HOP bus. Please visit www.goboulder.net for maps and bus schedules.
