CU-BOULDER TO HOST CAMPUS MASTER PLAN OPEN HOUSE ON MARCH 16

The University of Colorado Boulder is hosting a Campus Master Plan open house on Wednesday, March 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Flatirons Room at the Center for Community. The open house launches the 30-day public comment period and members of the campus and community are invited to come at any time to talk with campus planners about the draft plan.

The Campus Master Plan, a guiding document required by the Colorado Commission of Higher Education, outlines campus development over the next decade. The university began the planning process over a year ago with eight task force groups consisting of members from the campus and the community. Each task force provided input on larger focus areas and subjects. After receiving final reports from each task force, the university hired consultants for technical areas, compiled information, and wrote the draft plan.

“The Campus Master Plan represents a convergence of key communities on campus and within the city of Boulder,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. “We are putting forth a bold vision — one that makes maximum use of our existing resources, promotes sustainability and innovation, and that will accommodate new generations of students. Together, moving the plan forward, we are laying the groundwork for a bold new century for CU-Boulder.”

Following the 30-day comment period, planners will finalize the document and submit it for approval to campus planning and design boards, the Board of Regents and ultimately the CCHE. The approved Campus Master Plan will guide CU-Boulder campus development until 2020.

The Center for Community is located on the CU-Boulder campus on Regent Drive, just east of Broadway, and the Flatirons Room is located on the third floor. Pay visitor parking is located just west of the building. After 5 p.m. the parking lot across the street is free.

A draft of the master plan will be available for download on March 16 at http://www.colorado.edu/masterplan.

Debris removal work scheduled for Fourmile Canyon Creek

The Urban Drainage Flood Control District (UDFCD), in consultation with the City of Boulder, will conduct wood debris removal in Fourmile Canyon Creek, between 34th and 47th streets, beginning on Wednesday, March 16. The effort is expected to take a few weeks to complete.

Crews will remove downed wood, fallen dead trees and trash from the creek area that could impede flood waters and worsen the flood risk if not cleared. Studies have shown that rain events in the Fourmile Fire burn area could result in higher than normal flow rates on Fourmile Canyon Creek. Removing the debris helps water move through the creek and stay within the flood channel.

All wood will be taken to a wood recycling center in the form of chipped material. Live trees and dead standing trees will not be removed. Any ground areas impacted by the work will be restored as part of the project.

For additional questions and/or concerns, please contact Christie Coleman, City of Boulder Utilities Division, 303-441-3266.

Family Gathering Place Renovation begins today

Renovation of the Family Gathering Place, located in the 1200 block of the Pearl Street Mall, has begun. The Family Gathering Place is a popular stop for families while visiting the Mall and is known for its large climbing rocks.

After 34 years of service, the area is being improved to remove deteriorating wood timbers and improve safety and accessibility. Renovation of the area will include adding an ADA-access ramp, replacing surface material, and replacing wood timbers with new, untreated, Ipe hardwood timbers. The existing bridge that was replaced recently will remain.

The renovation process is expected to take approximately 6 to10 weeks (depending upon weather) and has a budget of $150,000 (from the Parks and Recreation Department’s Capital Improvement Project fund).

Access to the area will be restricted throughout construction using perimeter safety fencing. Additional safety measures will be employed as needed when construction equipment is operating in the area.

Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to area businesses and visitors. This work should not require closure of any businesses.
