You Talkin’ to My Little Friend?

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

Righteous Kill - Movie PosterRIGHTEOUS KILL is a terrific film worth seeing for more reasons than two, and by “two,” of course, I mean Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

These two iconic actors are together again for the first time playing two veteran New York City police detectives named David Fisk and Thomas Cowan, but who go by the nicknames of “Turk” and “Rooster.”

They have been partners for 30 years, they are highly decorated, and as another police detective says about them, there is not an inch of daylight between them.

In fact, as one of them says to the other, “You’re my partner. You’re my role model. What am I going to do without a role model?”

However, before they can retire, Turk and Rooster investigate the murder of a notorious pimp, which appears to have a connection with a case they solved years ago.

The victim is a suspected criminal whose body was found accompanied by a four-line poem that claims to justify the killing. And then the next thing they know, there are additional killings with additional poems, and they realize that they are looking for a serial killer, someone who is targeting criminals who have managed to escape being punished.

Eventually, Rooster and Turk are forced to team up with two other police detectives, and there is even more than one investigation going on.

Also, when it becomes clear that Turk has connections with most of the victims, the detectives have to face the possibility that the serial killer might actually be a policeman.

Now, don’t get distracted by the distractions, and there are plenty of distractions, just as there is lots of misdirection in the story. Stay focused on the actors and the acting, and pay attention to the details, because there is a terrific turnaround, and even when you think you know what has happened, you can’t imagine what is going to happen next.

In fact, see this wonderful film twice. See it once for the story and then see it a second time just for the acting and the actors. You will be glad you did.

And, of course, while you are watching De Niro and Pacino, you will keep being reminded of the previous films they have starred in.

RIGHTEOUS KILL cries out for someone to say, “You talkin’ to my little friend?”

Ugly Ducklings Meet ‘Mean Girls’

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

The House Bunny - Movie PosterTHE HOUSE BUNNY has a “high concept” coupled with “low humor” and some girls who are very “easy on the eyes.”

Oh! And it is touching at the end, too, and I am not being punny.

Well, so much for the “low humor.”

The high concept is “A Playboy Bunny becomes the house mother for a sorority house full of losers and misfits and saves the girls from disaster.

Again, I am not being punny.

Anna Faris stars as Shelley Darlingson, and you might recognize her from the SCARY MOVIE movies, because she has been in all four of them. Tom Hanks’s son appears in it, as well.

Shelley grew up in an orphanage, but now she has been living in the Playboy Mansion for nine years, where she fulfills her duties as a Playboy Bunny.

Shelley wants to live “happily ever after” in the Mansion, but she wishes that she would be chosen to be a Centerfold, which she says would mean, “I’m naked in the center of a magazine.”

However, the morning after Shelley is given a party for her 27th birthday, she is told that she has two hours to move out of the Mansion, with the explanation that “27” is “59” in Bunny years.

So, Shelley packs all her belongings into her beat-up old automobile with a bumper sticker that reads “Mean People Are Mean” and drives off looking for a place to stay and new employment.

Through a series of fortuitous circumstances, Shelley gets hired by the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority at a small college to be the girls’ house mother.

The sorority is in trouble. It hasn’t met its campus requirements for three years, they get no pledges, and everyone thinks they are losers. It has only seven members now, and they have to get 30 new pledges in order to keep their standing with the college administration.

So, Shelley gets to work, using all her experience to make the seven girls the hottest girls on campus, which is no easy task. She gives them all makeovers in order to make them noticeable, telling them “The eyes are the nipples of the face.”

There is a surprise twist in the middle, the gags are good, and it is better than what it appears to be.

THE HOUSE BUNNY is “The Ugly Ducklings Meet ‘Mean Girls.'”
