Volunteers needed for Boulder Public Library Summer Reading Program
Volunteers are needed to help out with Boulder Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program, which runs from May 28 to July 5, 2013. Volunteers will help sign kids up for the program, track their reading hours, assist with related programs and distribute prizes.
The Meadows and George Reynolds branch libraries specifically need 24 volunteers to assist with the summer reading program in those locations, in east and south Boulder. Volunteer trainings will be held May 13, 18 and 19.

University of Colorado junior Emily Hunsucker just keeps getting better and better as she broke her CU record in the hammer throw for the third time this season at the Cowpoke Open on Friday afternoon.
Hunsucker launched a toss of 203-9 in her first throw to demolish her previous mark of 200-3 by more than three feet. This was her sixth win of the season. Hunsucker’s throw was over 16 feet further than Colorado State’s Jenna Sliwinski’s throw of 187-1. Hunsucker’s series was so good, that despite two fouls, any one of her four fair throws would have won the meet (203-9, 203-3, F, 193-0, F, 193-2).
The throw improves her Pac-12 ranking from seventh to fifth and she now ranks 16th on the national list. Hunsucker is also 11th in the west region rankings.
On the men’s side, Cameron Hutchins threw his season-best in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-5, passing his mark of 175-6, to place sixth. Brady Rutt recorded a personal-best and took ninth with a throw of 171-3.

CU police: Sex assault suspect sketch released

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying the suspect involved in an attempted sex assault. A composite sketch of the suspect is attached. Through interviews with the victim, UCPD has also been able to identify a more specific location and time of the incident. UCPD believes the attempted sex assault occurred between 11:15 to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2013, near Broadway and Pleasant Street.

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department is investigating a report of an attempted sexual assault on the west end of campus near Broadway. On April 27, 2013 a female CU student reported to police that around midnight she was attacked near the Broadway bike path while walking home from a party on the hill. According to the victim, the suspect approached from behind, pushed her to the ground, placed a pair scissors to her throat, and began to remove her clothing. The female struck the suspect in the face and was able to flee the scene.
The female described the attacker as follows:
- White male
- Approximately 50 years old
- 5’ 6”
- Scruffy beard
- Crooked teeth
- Wearing dark colored athletic shorts and a white t-shirt
The case number is 2013-1059.

CU’s Emma Coburn is the fastest in the world (this year), named Pac-12 Track Athlete Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. –University of Colorado senior Emma Coburn has been named the Pac-12 Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week after clocking the best 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the world this season.
Coburn won the steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on Saturday night with a time of 9:28.26, just two days after running a 4:11.36 1,500 at Drake Relays…over 1,800 miles away. Coburn defeated Brooks’ Jamie Cheever by a narrow margin (9:29.13), but the two blew away the field with the third-place finisher, Weber State’s Amber Henry, finishing in 9:51.55. Prior to Coburn’s run, the top NCAA steeplechase time was 9:50.39, set by Cornell’s Rachel Sorna. Coburn’s 9:28.26 is also the third fastest time in NCAA history and made her the second best performer in the event.
The Crested Butte, Colo. native also did quite well in her 1,500, placing eighth overall. She was the only collegiate runner in a field that included the regaining IAAF 1,500-Meter World Champion and CU volunteer assistant coach Jenny Simpson (who won in 4:03), and other Olympians. Coburn’s time is fifth in the NCAA, but on Friday night it was the fastest in the NCAA.
Both times from the weekend are the best by a Pac-12 runner this season.
The Buffs are gearing up for the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Los Angeles. The combined events portion of the meet will be contested this weekend, May 4-5, and the rest of the meet will be the following weekend, May 11-12. USC is this year’s host.

Roberson going pro

Junior Andre Roberson, a 6-7 forward who was on the verge of becoming CU’s career rebounding leader, made his decision about midday Sunday and notified CU Coach Tad Boyle.
Roberson was scheduled to announce his intentions at a Friday morning news conference at the Coors Events Center, but he and his family canceled the conference because Roberson apparently was torn between leaving school and turning pro.
He had until 9:59 p.m. MDT Sunday to declare himself eligible for the NBA Draft, which will be conducted on June 27 at the Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets.
“We support Andre and want what’s best for him and his family,” Boyle said Sunday afternoon. “We wish him the best.”
Roberson leaves CU with most of the school’s rebounding records within his reach and a legitimate chance to likely have put some of those marks out of reach for any future Buff.
The odds favored Roberson becoming CU’s top career rebounder in the first game of what would have been his senior year; he needed 10 rebounds, which would have given him 1,055 – one more than Stephane Pelle (1999-03) – with the remainder of his final season ahead of him.
Nonetheless, in three seasons Roberson left his mark. He was the only CU player with 1,000 points (1,012) and rebounds (1,045), 150 blocks (150) and steals (164), and 100 assists (119). He also was the first Buffs player to lead the team in rebounding, blocked shots and steals for three consecutive seasons.
At the team’s annual banquet earlier this month, Roberson was presented the Stephane Pelle Rebounding Award and earned the Best Defensive Player Award as voted by his teammates. He also was selected as the Pac-12 Conference’s Defensive Player of The Year and was a first-team all-conference pick.
In the Buffs’ school-record third consecutive 20-win season (21-12, 10-8 Pac-12 Conference), Roberson became the first CU player in 22 years to average a double-double (10.9 ppg, 11.2 rpg) in consecutive years. He finished second nationally in rebounding and he leaves CU with a career average just shy of a double-double – 9.6 points, 10.0 rebounds.
What’s to become of the 2013-14 Buffs minus Roberson? He’ll undoubtedly be missed but Boyle believes his team can thrive anyway. At a season-ending wrap-up on April 11, Boyle said his fourth CU squad will “be good with or without him . . . Andre knows we’re going to have a good team next year; it’s not going to be a make-or-break decision for Colorado basketball.”
Before Roberson’s decision, several Internet news outlets projected the Buffs to be in the preseason Top 25 for 2013-14. Among the more reputable, Sports Illustrated had them No. 11, CBSSports.com No. 12, and USA Today No. 16. With Roberson out of the picture, those projections could change. Roberson’s return might have kept the 2013-14 Buffs among the most highly touted preseason teams in school history, but CU isn’t likely to suffer.
Boyle’s roster is far from barren. He gets an immediate frontcourt replacement in 6-8 redshirt freshman Wes Gordon and will count on improved board work from 6-10 Josh Scott and 6-6 Xavier Johnson, both sophomores-to-be. And with the addition of 6-7 redshirt freshman Chris Jenkins and 6-5 Jaron Hopkins, 6-6 Tre’Shaun Fletcher and 6-7 Dustin Thomas – all true freshmen – the Buffs should receive an immediate influx of length and athleticism to help with rebounding and a revamped defensive strategy.
Most draft projections omitted Roberson from the first round, and only first-round selections get guaranteed contracts. However, the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement gives agents the chance to negotiate guaranteed pacts for second-round picks. Yet there are no guarantees Roberson will go in the second round.
A sample of Roberson’s positioning in the Top 100 draft prospects: ESPN.com – 54th overall; CBSSports.com – 54th overall;DraftExpress.com – 57th overall; HoopsWorld.com – 57th overall. If those projections reflect a general consensus among NBA directors of player personnel, Roberson could be a late-second round selection.
At the conclusion of CU’s season, Boyle and Athletic Director Mike Bohn flew to San Antonio to meet with the Roberson family. Boyle also applied to the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee for an evaluation of Roberson’s “draftability.”
The committee is composed of NBA general managers and other team officials who scout college games and players. Two years ago, the committee projected CU sophomore Alec Burks, a 6-6 shooting guard, to be a mid-first round selection if not a potential lottery pick. He was chosen 12th overall by Utah and signed a three-year rookie contract worth $6.3 million.
Boyle contrasted the situations of Burks and Roberson, saying each players’ decision boiled down to “risk/reward,” with not much risk for Burks but significantly more for Roberson. Boyle believes Roberson will polish his offensive game and improve in other facets next season, but the critical question of “where?” won’t be answered until the NBA Draft.

Temporary lane closures for tree removals along Arapahoe Avenue rescheduled for Friday, April 26
On Friday, April 26, there will be intermittent lane closures in both directions on Arapahoe Avenue between 18thand 19th streets from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Contractors working for the City of Boulder Urban Forestry Division will be removing three high-risk trees in preparation for the upcoming Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction project. During the tree removals, traffic will be directed into the center lane. The work schedule is weather-dependent.

Youth Services Initiative art show opening May 2
The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Services Initiative (YSI) program will host an art show opening from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway. The show features art from YSI participants, ages 7 to 18.
Growing Up Boulder (GUB), Boulder’s “child- and youth-friendly city initiative,” photographer Rebecca Stumpf, and YSI partnered to initiate a neighborhood photovoice project funded by a Diversity and Excellence grant from the University of Colorado and a Boulder Arts Commission mini-grant. The “Giving Youth a (Photo) Voice: Pairing Photography and Word to Express Youth Voice” project is a part of this year’s art show.

A Mexican marketplace at Manhattan Middle School
Students, family and alumni at Manhattan Middle School will soon be immersed in a simulated Hispanic Marketplace. Manhattan’s Spanish language arts program will create the marketplace, called Mercado Hispano, and will give those in attendance the opportunity to taste, see and hear Hispanic culture. Mercado Hispano will be presented from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Manhattan Middle School cafeteria.
“It’s a simulated immersion experience,” said Susan Simonds, Spanish and Dance teacher at Manhattan. “The students are very excited.”
Simonds said the students have been studying 19 of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. Two-to-three students will be dedicated to representing each country they studied at Mercado Hispano, and they’ll offer authentic food, drinks and crafts that they have produced themselves. The cafeteria will also be decorated to simulate each country. Entertainment will include a professional Flamenco dance and music performance.
This is the fourth year for Mercado Hispano, this year’s being the biggest thus far, with 76 students participating.
Families, alumni and media are all invited to attend.

Temporary lane closures for tree removals along Arapahoe Avenue rescheduled for Monday, April 15
With a winter storm warning in effect for Boulder, the tree removal work that was planned for Tuesday, April 9, and Friday, April 12, has been rescheduled to April 15 due to the inclement weather forecast.
On Monday, April 15, there will be intermittent lane closures in both directions on Arapahoe Avenue between 18th and 19th streets from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Contractors working for the City of Boulder Urban Forestry Division will be removing three high-risk trees in preparation for the upcoming Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction project. The two-lane section of Arapahoe Avenue, between Folsom and 17th streets, is in poor condition and in need of a reconstruction.
During the tree removals, traffic will be directed into the center lane. The work schedule is weather-dependent.
In the 1800 block of Arapahoe Avenue, two silver maple trees with significant trunk cavities and restricted root zones will be removed for safety reasons. In the 2100 block, a Siberian elm will be removed due to past storm damage. These are the only large trees planned for removal as part of the Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction. The city has contacted adjacent property owners in advance and will explore opportunities to plant replacement trees.
The city’s Urban Forestry Division inspects street trees in neighborhoods and parks for structural integrity and safety using industry-set standards and techniques. The Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction project includes reconstruction of the street into concrete, storm drainage improvements, and sidewalk, bus stop, and landscaping improvements, as space and funding allow.The reconstruction is planned to begin in late May 2013 and will be completed in fall 2013. The project is funded by the 2011 voter-approved Capital Improvement Bond, which allowed the city to leverage existing revenues to bond for approximately $49 million to fund projects that address significant deficiencies, such as this one, and high priority infrastructure improvements. A community stakeholder committee prioritized projects to be funded by the bond and Arapahoe improvements were given a high priority due to current deteriorating conditions.

Youth Opportunities Advisory Board applications now available
Applications are now available for the City of Boulder 2013-2014 Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB). Current City of Boulder residents in grades 8 through 11 are eligible to apply. No previous leadership experience is required.
YOAB members learn valuable skills as they make funding decisions on grant proposals for youth programs, advise city government and local agencies on youth-related issues, and work on projects to address youth needs.

Orientation to Family Child Care Workshop offered
The City of Boulder’s Division of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) is offering a workshop on how to become a licensed family child care provider. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the CYF building, 2160 Spruce St.
Participants will learn the costs and benefits of licensing, Colorado’s rules and regulations and the steps required to become licensed.
Now is the time to begin the licensing process for summer or fall enrollment. The workshop is free to City of Boulder residents; there is a nominal fee for non-residents.

Two CU Buffs earned wins in straight sets, but the No. 75 CU women’s tennis team lost to the University of Washington 5-2
“This is just another example of how tough the Pac-12 is,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Washington came in and competed hard. I think we gave our best effort today. We have 10 days before our next match to regroup a little bit and get ready.”
CU falls to 7-12 overall, 2-7 Pac-12 Conference in just its second match playing as a ranked team this season. Washington, the seventh team the Buffs have faced this season that is ranked and boasts at least one ranked player or doubles team, improves to 11-9, 3-6 Pac-12 after falling to Utah on Friday.
The Buffs came out with a statement, with Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders knocking off No. 71 Douglas-Miron/Shimizu.
On a windy day that had Winde Janssens out of the singles lineup, freshman Dhany Quevedo stepped up in the No. 2 position, and sophomore Julyette Steur extended her Pac-12 winning streak to three.
“Obviously I’m really happy and proud for Dhany for getting a Pac-12 win and at No. 2 singles at that,” Kenneally said. “It’s fantastic. And Julyette continues to play strong.”
After Steur took down Washington State’s second winningest player in three sets on Friday, she had no problem getting another big win at the No. 1 singles position. Steur defeated Andjela Nemcevic 6-2, 6-2 for her 11th win of the spring and her third straight in the Pac-12.
Quevedo stood out against Elianne Douglas-Miron, winning key break points to take the match 6-4, 6-3. The victory was the 10th of her young career and her second in the Pac-12, having defeated Arizona State’s Leighann Sahagun in three sets.
Following an extended break, the Buffs conclude the regular season against Utah at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex unless weather pushes play inside. The Buffs then head to the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif. from April 25-28.

BOULDER – In its first match this season competing as a ranked team, the No. 75 University of Colorado tennis team continued to be tested, falling 6-1 to No. 70 Washington State on Friday afternoon at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex.
“All credit to Washington State,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “They came out and they played a tough, competitive match. They did a great job of hustling. I think we as a team put a solid effort out there. Several of the players have had an adverse week. This match is an opportunity for us to learn to not let it happen again. Obviously this time of year, a lot of college students are coming down with sicknesses. It’s important for us to take precautions to minimize that. I think we had a solid fight and effort, but we just weren’t as sharp as we have been. Ultimately, we have the opportunity to come back on Sunday. There’s nothing like coming out and competing as quickly as possible after a loss.”
Juliet Steur had a good match against Washington State
The Buffs, ranked for the first time in the regular season since April 2010, fall to 7-12 overall, 2-6 Pac-12 Conference. Washington State improves to 13-9, 2-6 Pac-12. The Cougars boast one of their most impressive teams, with all three seniors, Liudmila Vasilieva, Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras, ranked among the top six all-time in singles victories at WSU.
Though the Buffaloes are wrapping up the regular season, their stiff competition continues with their final home matches. All 10 of CU’s most recent opponents have either been ranked, had at least one ranked player or both (as is the case for six of the teams). Of the teams the Buffs have faced this season, 11 (nine from the Pac-12) are in the current ITA College Tennis Rankings, with five ranked in the top 25.
CU showed perseverance early despite dropping the doubles point. Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders had a resounding 8-5 win over Googe/Vasilieva in the No. 1 position for their eighth win, and second in the Pac-12, as a pair this season. Janssens/Manzi Tenorio and Quevedo/Watrous both fought, but eventually fell. Janssens/Manzi Tenorio battled for every point in their 6-8 defeat, and Quevedo/Watrous won three straight sets to fight back from down 1-6, but fell 4-8.
When singles play began, four Buffs were down a break at 3-4 in the first set. Julyette Steur and Winde Janssens both showed their strength in face of adversity in the top two positions. Both players battled back from 3-4 to claim 5-4 leads, then fell behind 5-6 but sent their first sets into tiebreakers.
Steur came out victorious with a 7-3 first set tiebreak win. With hopes of becoming WSU’s all-time winningest player, Liudmila Vasilieva came back with a vengeance, claiming the second set 6-4. With the overall match already decided, they were sent into a third set super-tiebreaker. But once again, Steur had the upper hand, winning 10-6. The victory was Steur’s 10th win of spring and second in the Pac-12 this season and put a halt in Vasilieva’s hunt to be the all-time leader. With 104 career wins, Vasilieva is still four wins away from the title.
Janssens fought in a tiebreaker of her own, but could never regain the lead, falling 7-5 and retiring after the first set.
Freshman Mazy Watrous had one of her best Pac-12 performances, winning five games in her 6-4, 6-1 loss to Charlotte Koning.
CU wraps up the regular season with two more home matches. The Buffs take on No. 45 Washington on Sunday, April 7. First serve is at 10 a.m. After an extended break, the Buffs conclude home play against Utah at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. Both matches will be held at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex unless weather pushes play inside.

CU is in the ITA College Tennis Rankings for the first time in the regular season since April 2010.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 75, join nine other Pac-12 Conference teams in the rankings. Colorado holds a 7-11 overall, 2-5 Pac-12 record, tying for sixth in conference standings. With three matches left in the season, the Buffs have already matched their 2011-12 win total. 
“It’s exciting for the program, and it’s exciting for the players,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “It’s been a few years since we’ve been included in the national rankings. I think it’s a testament to all the hard work the players have put in during the fall semester and in this spring semester. It shows their continued engagement in the process of learning and getting better in every match and every practice. I’m excited for the program.”
The most recently the Buffs have been ranked in the regular season was when they concluded the 2009-10 regular season against No. 19 Texas. The Buffs went into the match ranked No. 68 and finished the season with an 11-13 overall, 3-8 Big 12 record and a No. 72 ranking.
The Buffs have marked several milestones this year. They earned their first ever Pac-12 win on March 10 with a 4-2 win over Arizona, breaking a 26-match regular season conference losing streak. This season, the Buffs have taken down two out of eight ranked opponents. CU beat No. 62 Stephen F. Austin 6-1 on February 2, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since the then-ranked No. 55 Buffs defeated No. 71 Denver on February 1, 2010.
After facing a tough stretch versus ranked Pac-12 teams, the Buffs got a big win over No. 59 Oregon last weekend. The 5-2 victory over the Ducks marks the highest ranked opponent the Buffs have defeated since beating then-ranked No. 46 New Mexico on February 7, 2009. All nine of CU’s most recent opponents have either been ranked, had at least one ranked player or both (as is the case for six of the teams, including Oregon). Of the teams the Buffs have faced this season, 11 hold a place the current rankings, with five ranked in the top 25.
The Buffs conclude their regular season against stiff competition. CU takes on No. 70 Washington State at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5 and No. 45 Washington at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 7. They end the season against No. 63 Utah at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. All matches will be held at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex unless weather moves play indoors.

Host and No. 10 Stanford led from wire-to-wire, though had to hold off No. 8 TCU in the final round. The Cardinal won with a 23-under par team score of 817, good for a six stroke win over the Horned Frogs (823); TCU shot the low round of the tournament Saturday with an 11-under 269, thanks to four players carding rounds in the 60s. No. 22 St. Mary’s finished a distant third with an 839 total (1-under).
Colorado, ranked No. 58 by GolfStat and No. 71 by Golfweek, shot the sixth best score of the day, but was only able to move up from ninth to eighth as the middle of the pack was extremely contested. CU’s 2-over 282 gave it a 13-over 853 overall, in the middle of a nine-team logjam that saw the fifth through 13th place teams be separated by only 12 shots. The Buffs defeated three teams ranked ahead of them and six overall.
“It was a solid day, our best round of the tournament at 2-over,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “To move up from where we were wasn’t bad; there were more teams closer to us from behind than were ahead. And we got some good head to head wins.”
Unlike Friday, when the Buffaloes played the last three holes at 8-over par by the four players who scored, they reversed that in the final round, playing those at 2-under.
Sophomore David Oraee recorded CU’s best individual round of the tournament, posting a 3-under 67 to finish the meet at 1-over 211, tying him for 22nd place. He rebounded from an opening 75 with two rounds in the 60s on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course layout. Oraee played his last 30 holes at 4-under par, with an eagle and seven birdies over that span. He tied for a team best 11 birdies overall. It was his second best 54-hole score of the season, and he led the team for the third time, the first this spring.
“It was a really good round by David, he’s really coming into his own,” Edwards said. “He played really good (Friday) as well, he could have shot a 64 or 65. Today he played smart and confident and never put himself in bad position. He was always in a good spot, and inevitably when that happens, you’ll shoot a good score.”
Senior Jason Burstyn and freshman Philip Juel-Berg turned in identical efforts for the entire tournament, as their 68-74-72—214 scorecards tied them for 34th.
Burstyn closed with two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys for his 2-over 72, as he led the Buffs in pars for the meet with 35; he was also the only Buff not to record worse than a bogey. Juel-Berg had a birdies and 14 pars against three bogeys en route to his 72, as he had the fewest holes over par (11) by a Buff to go with an eagle, nine birdies and 33 pars.
Senior Derek Fribbs tied for 44th, as he recorded a second straight 1-over 71; that gave him a 5-over 215 score overall. He was steady and consistent in the final round, with two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys, and was really consistent overall with 10 birdies and 30 pars overall, with 13 bogeys and just one double over the course of the meet. He birdied his last hole (No. 9), which enabled the Buffs to defeat Pac-12 rival Oregon by one stroke in the end.
Redshirt freshman Drew Trujillo wrapped things up with a 5-over 75, giving him a 13-over 223 which tied him for 79th overall in the 96-man field. He made things interesting Saturday, with a team-best five birdies, but only managed six pars (only two of which came in his first 10 holes); he had four bogeys and three doubles that sidetracked him from posting a subpar effort. He tied Oraee for the team high with 11 birdies.
TCU’s Paul Barjon grabbed medalist honors, as his final round 67 gave him an 11-under par total of 199 for the tournament, good for a three shot win over Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers.
Colorado has one more tournament ahead of the Pac-12 Championships, which are a month away and will be played at the famed Los Angeles Country Club. The Buffs’ final tune-up is set for April 8-9 in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Edwards feels pretty good about his team’s season, particularly the spring, to date.
“We do feel really good about it,” Edwards said. “We’ve definitely improved a lot over the course of the spring and the season as a whole. I was really pleased with the effort and execution today. We just keep getting better and it’s been really encouraging. We’ll keep working at it and try to keep improving at everything we do.”

BOULDER – The CU women won their second game against a PAC 12 opponent in three years..
“I’m really proud of the players,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “We came out and competed. It’s been a tough couple of weeks of competition that we’ve had, playing the top four schools in our conference, who were really, really tough. I think we all learned from that, and it really helped us today. I think they really bounced back well. We’ve got three more teams coming into town over the next couple of weeks and we look forward to having those teams here.”
The Buffaloes pick up their first win over a ranked opponent since taking down No. 62 Stephen F. Austin 6-1 on February 2. This marks the highest ranked opponent the Buffs have defeated since beating then-ranked No. 46 New Mexico on February 7, 2009. All nine of CU’s most recent opponents have either been ranked, had at least one ranked player or both (as is the case for six of the teams, including Oregon). The Buffs are now 2-6 against ranked opponents this season, and an impressive 5-2 at home, opening home outdoor play against the Ducks.
“It means something when players don’t necessarily play their best and still win and find a way,” Kenneally said. “I think we did that in several positions today in singles and doubles. That’s what I’m most proud of because it just shows that mentally they’ve taken a step forward, which is great.”
Colorado improves to 7-11 overall, 2-5 Pac-12, matching last year’s overall win total, and marking the first time since the 2009-10 season that the Buffs won at least two conference matches. Oregon, having been ranked in the ITA top-75 in all but two matches this spring, falls to 11-5, 1-4 Pac-12. CU leads the overall series 10-6.
The Buffs sprang into action early, taking the doubles point. The freshman duo of Dhany Quevedo and Mazy Watrous got its first ever win as a pair, besting Hughes/Hager 8-1. Juniors Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio continue to be a power for the Buffs, earning their 10th win together this season with an 8-5 win over Metzger/Neubert.
After facing seven straight ranked opponents, Julyette Steur claimed a win over the eighth, defeating No. 102 Nicole Long, who has lost only twice this spring, 6-1, 6-1 for her 14th win of the season. All but one of her wins this spring have been in straight sets. The victory was Steur’s first over a ranked opponent since she beat then-ranked No. 104 McCall Jones of UCLA on March 23, 2012.
Janssens and Manzi Tenorio each earned their 40th career singles win with victories in straight sets. Janssens bested Patricia Skowronski 6-1, 6-3. Janssens leads the Buffs with 16 wins this season, including four in-conference. Manzi Tenorio got her 14th win of the season and her second over a conference opponent with a solid 6-4, 7-6 win over Lana Buttner.
Senior Erin Sanders once again clinched the match for the Buffs, defeating Pascale Neubert 6-3, 6-3. Sanders now has seven wins this season, including two major conference victories.
The Buffs return to action next weekend as the season draws to a close. CU takes on Washington State at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5 and Washington at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 7.

Burstyn, Juel-Berg Pace Buffaloes With 2-Under 68s
PALO ALTO, Calif. —
There are three top 10 teams and 11 in the top 75 competing here, with host and No. 10 Stanford the day one leader with an 8-under par 272 score. Five strokes separate the top six teams through 18 holes, with six strokes the difference between seventh and 12th; the Buffaloes are in the middle of that logjam, with a 3-over 283 score that is good for ninth place.
“A great day for golf, the weather conditions were perfect,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “That’s why the scores are so good and so bunched. Overall, we had a decent day as far as our team score was concerned. The only thing that prevented us from shooting lower, or under par, is that we had some mistakes, but even those were few and far between.
“For the most part we played smart, and mitigated the big numbers,” he added. “It’s so tightly bunched, we did what we should have done and didn’t get tripped up by the tough holes. There are a lot of good teams in this field and this is a great test for us at this stage of the season, one month out from the Pac-12 Championship.”

Starting on the No. 1 tee, Burstyn turned a 3-under 32 on the front nine, with the aide of an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 hole. On the back, he couldn’t get some birdie putts to fall and endured two bogeys to bring him back closer to par in the end.
Juel-Berg played a fantastic back nine, firing a 31; after turning at 2-over, he birdied Nos. 10, 13, 15 and 16 and finished with a team-best six birdies, along with nine pars two bogeys and a double. He, too, endured a patch where he scored those three holes over par but had a birdie among them. He now has scored 12 birdies in his last two rounds, including 10 in his last 27 holes.
“Jason and Philip were really solid most of the day; both had to overcome a tough stretch around the middle of their rounds,” Edwards said. “Philip had a pretty good fall, though struggled a bit to start the spring but has come back to play well the last month. He’s a good player and he keeps getting better and better … and is making fewer and fewer freshman mistakes.”
Senior Derek Fribbs carded a 3-over 73, scoring four birdies and eight pars, with five bogeys and a double, tying him for 61st. He opened strong, with two birdies in the first three holes, but then endured a bad patch where he played the next eight holes at 6-over.
Redshirt freshman Drew Trujillo fashioned a 4-over 74, tying him for 66th place, as he had three birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and a double. He started off with a birdie, but played the next six holes at 5-over before closing by playing the course at even par over his final 11 holes.
Sophomore David Oraee carded a 5-over 78, tying him for 76th. He had two birdies and 10 pars against five bogeys and a double for his day, as he continued struggling this week on the west coast; he was 23-over par for the UC-Irvine Anteater, very uncharacteristic for him, especially coming off a 1-under performance at Bandon Dunes three weeks ago.
Collectively, the five Buffs scored 18 birdies Thursday, one more than in the final round of the Anteater invite, which was one more than CU had in Monday’s two rounds. Big numbers were kept to a minimum in the first round here, as CU had just four double bogeys and nothing worse.
Nine players are tied for the individual lead with 4-under 66 scores; the most compelling of that group being San Jose State’s Cody Blick, who made the turn at 1-over but rallied to score six birdies en route to a 30 on the back nine.
The second round of the tournament is set for Friday, with the final round on Saturday. Play begins each day at 9 a.m. MDT off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
